I've slowly building up an Demon Engine list (Mauler Fiends, Forge Fiends, Hell Drakes etc etc,), but struggling to find a decent option for clearing chaff units, that isn't itself vulnerable to small arms fire (on of the main advantages of the list is that anti-infantry fire is largely without a good target). Anyone got any ideas/experience with high toughness chaos units that can rip though chaff in the first turn or two?

There's a ton in the Forge World catalogue for Chaos, and they're all Hellforged daemon-engines (fluffwise, most lack the daemon engine keywords because of the Hellforged keyword) to boot.

Hellforged contemptor with 2 c-beam cannons.

Chaff cleared.

Not truly a deamon engine, but it works...

Yes, contemptor is a good option and not too shabby against tanks when I've run out of infantry to kill. Fire Raptor is also an option, but I'm struggling for conversion ideas (all my demon engines are represented by chaos marines on various AoS monsters, but non of the flying beasties are big enough to be a fire raptor.

AOS phoenix perhaps? might still be a little small.

maybe the new sea-elf turtle?

Helbrutes with double fist/flamers are okay, if a little slow, and not too expensive.

Nurgle foetid bloat drones are probably exactly what you’re looking for, and you can throw them into whatever detachment you want as long as everything else is also marked Nurgle. So 3 bloat drones and a Nurgle Chaos Lord of whatever Legion, no need to even bring more death guard units.

Bloat Drones for sure. 3 buzzing around in an outrider throwing 6 D6 auto hits? Yep

Nice idea with the Bloat Drones. I was thinking of adding some Nurgly goodness anyway.

Thanks all

FW Decimator w/ C-beam as alternative to Contemptor Dread? It's more fluffy as it's a daemon engine and still has the C-beam exploding chaff funtimes. Has been 3+ too pretty sure. Not sure on modelling ideas though; there has to be some hulking bipedal beastie that would work.

Could convert a Maggoth Lord. That’s what I use for a Decimator.

That said a Decimator always struck me more as a ‘march up and clean your clock’ unit.

C beams can’t move and fire, so I’m not sure it would be an ideal fit.

Agreed about the Decimator, having just used one last night. It's shooting can work well, but it's real threat is up close with a the claw/flamer. I had fun using it as an HQ murder machine. If it's just sitting back and clearing chaff, go Contemptor or other Dreadnoughts.

Are Heldrakes not good at clearing chaff? Or at the very least flying over them to get to juicier targets.

I'd say not good at clearing chaff whatsoever, but definitely capable of flying over stuff. Huge base, so being able to land 1" away from enemy models might prove difficult, depending on how savvy the opponent is.

Heldrakes kill 4,7 Guardsmen a turn (Shooting + Melee) for 185pts. They're arguably the worse Chaff clearing unit in the Codex (tied with Lascan Predators ).

Yup, Heldrakes are great for many things, but not clearing.

Yeah, I don't know what I was thinking on the Heldrake. They are obviously horrible at clearing chaff this edition. I guess I had a 7th ed relapse.

What options for a World Eaters roster and outside of ForgeWorld? I've been considering a defiler. When combined with the Daemonforge strat or w/e it seems like it might not be too bad - but not excellent. Any other thoughts come to mind? My opponent typically puts Alaitoc wind riders at the far back corners of the table so the unit would need to have some range.

If you like Emperor's Children, Sonic Dreadnought are great at clearing Chaff.

2 Blast Masters are a great weapon, vs Chaff it's 2d6 s4 shots with AP1 and ignores cover. And once chaff is gone you can switch to the single frequency.

You can add a Missile launcher for a cheap ranged dread or a fist to mix it up on in melee! Great Dakka for the price
