Hello, second time posting. This is my current list, It does decently enough but I'm looking to improve it while keeping it fluffy so I am open to suggestions. Restrictions are:

-No abhumans
-No plasma in the line squads, may be persuaded on the stormtroopers if I can find room for a tempestor prime for gets hot rerolls
-No melta (currently too expensive for what it does)
-No FW (half of my opponent pool refuses to play against FW)

My thoughts:
I consistently find I am a slightly weak on anti-tank... I wouldn't mind dropping the hydra, apart from one game where it performed spectacularly, it has been surprisingly mediocre. I love autocannons though :(

My List:
-------------------------Battalion----------------------------
Regiment: Valhallan

HQ:

-Company Commander:
Plasma Pistol
Power Sword
Relic: Laurels of Command
Warlord Trait: Grand Strategist

-Company Commander:
Bolt Pistol
Chainsword

Troops:

-4x Infantry Squad
Flamer
Heavy Bolter
Sergeant w/ Laspistol and Chainsword

-Tempestus Scions
5 Extra Models
4x Hot-Shot Volley Guns
Sergeant w/ Hot-Shot Laspistol

Elites:

-Command Squad
4x Sniper Rifles

Fast Attack:

-2x Armored Sentinel
Lascannon

Heavy Support:

-Hydra
Hull Mounted Heavy Bolter

-Leman Russ Battle Tank
Hull Mounted Lascannon
Sponson Heavy Bolters

-Basilisk
Hull Mounted Heavy Bolter

-------------------------------------------Auxiliary Detachment------------------------------------
Heavy Support:

-Heavy Weapons Squad
3x Mortar

What are your thoughts?

TOTAL: 996 pts

Howdy!

I have a few thoughts. It seems like you could get more CP if you restructured the list. Your battalion is very close to a Brigade. It looks like you could shave points like dropping the wargear, , switching to scout sentinels, and perhaps rethinking some of the tank equipment. You could help that process along by switching the scions for more infantry/ commissar elites. You could turn that auxiliary into a spearhead for less than 100 points with more mortars and a naked commander.

I would try to structure it as a Brigade and spearhead detachment. It looks like you can with the point values. I am also curious why you are not using conscripts. From what I understand, the combination of Valhalla doctrine and a commissar is essentially old school conscripts. That seems like a useful tool, dropping a blob of conscripts into the enemy (with the dagger).

I've fought in this endless hateful war for eight months now, night and day. In that time I've aged a decade. My hair has turned grey, nearly all my squad have died, and I doubt I'll ever smile again. I've fought next to heroes and strangled men in their sleep. But I'm still alive and by the Emperor I plan to stay that way. - Acting-Captain Haines,47th Armageddon Steel Legion

I would agree with the above. Try to get your detachment into a brigade. Shave some points with upgrades

I third the opinion of striving for a brigade. It's so easy, so why not? I would also suggest plasma or grenade launchers instead of flamers in your infantry squads. Heavy weapons teams are much better stationary i'd put special weapons that lend themselves to that. If you really want the flamers I suggest switching the snipers with the flamers to have the snipers in the infantry squads and the flamers in the command squad.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
although flamers in a command squad would need a transport of they would get picked off immediately. I highly recommend the command squad be taken with a banner and heavy weapon (autocannon?)

the cheapest AM brigade comes in at 700 something i think. but his list wouldnt have any bite in a 1k list.

If you have russ tanks then tank commanders can be pretty good in those low point games. i wouldnt upgrade sentinels past auto cannons due to their BS.

Infantry squads are superior in every way and cost the same amount of points as conscripts.

This. I've tried multiple ways of stretching it into a brigade and it just compromises my list too much.

I might be able to do something like a battalion and a spearhead though if someone wanted to come up with something along those lines.

With the new FAQ changes and grand strategist warlord trait, I'm not exactly hurting for CP.

Agreed, I'd love to take them down to autocannon sentinels and get rid of the hydra, but then I'd be lacking even more anti-tank then I do now. Any advice on how to remedy that?
