Howdy,
I used to play some Warhammer 40k (5th Edition, Space Marines) and Warmachines/Hordes (Mk2 Cygnar/Trollbloods).
I played in a small area in college with a group of friends and had no local game shop or community outside of these friends. I really enjoy all the aspects of table top gaming including the hobby/painting side and the competitive gaming side. After my friends started to graduate I got gifted a couple of their small Warmachine/Hordes forces and a couple other offered me their collections for VERY appealing price tags. As an almost obsessive collector I couldn't say no and now I have forces of varying sizes including Cygnar, Cryx, Menoth, Khador, Mercenaries, Trollbloods and Skorne. I dream to one day add Circle, Grymkins and Minion Gators to that collection.
Now I'm in a much larger area with a few game shops and one of them does weekly Warmachine wednesday events. I'm really excited to get back in to the game, but I'm totally new to Mk 3 and the era of battle engines and colossi. There is a chance I might look at 40k again eventually, but for now I only have the time and money to invest in a single table top and I've always preferred the looks and gameplay of Warmachines/Hordes. I have a couple specific goals that I want to follow to try and get the most out of my wargaming:
1.) Get back in to painting and modelling. It is a great part of the game and something you can do 100% on your own. I have my Cygnar force which I started painting back in the day and I put a lot of love in to the models I did. With all the inherited forces from my buddies there are a lot of low quality paint jobs and a lot of bare primer and metal models. It will be a lot of work but I plan to fully strip down all of the models from the non-cygnar factions and start them from scratch. I'll start by stripping them, reposing and fixing up some of the models that are just a little wonky and then spray priming them all so they are blank canvasses to work on painting. I love that I will have such a variety of model types and factions to work with. It should really help to have side projects when I get bored of painting everything blue and brass.
2.) Get one army in to decent competitive state. I think it makes the most sense to pick Cygnar because I'm familiar with them and have the most models for them. I just want to have a list or two for a range of points sizes so I can load up an army transport, head out to a Warmachine night at the local store and have some fun options to play. Once I get good with the rules and playing the game again, then I'll get more creative, but I definitely want my Cygnar to be the cornerstone of my collection.
3.) Turn all the factions I have (and maybe a couple I don't.) in to 35/50 point lists for "house" games. My old buddies that I got many of these factions from keep in touch and we often talk about how it would be great to get together for a weekend here and there and play some games of Warmachine. Since I have all the collections I want to dive really deep in to this idea so I can host these game nights and have some really fun times with my old gaming buddies. This means looking at smaller points games and trying to make up some fairly balanced and fun lists out of all of these factions. This will make it easy for guys who haven't played in a couple years to just look at a list or two and pick instead of having to know the armies well enough to make up a list on the spot. I want to focus on smaller games and maybe jack/beast heavy lists to keep things from getting too cumbersome and complicated. Also, jacks/beasts are the models I love most about the game so that would certainly give me more fun stuff to paint. I'll look at adding battle engines and Colossi for some great display pieces eventually. One day I plan to go as far as having a nice terrain table to really ramp things up.
So that's me. That's what I'm trying to do. All of my models are in storage right now but I'll be getting them sometime in May. I'll be attending this weeks' Warmachines Wednesday to just chat with the local players and maybe pick up a new Cygnar model or two and some painting supplies. This summer is when I plan to do the bulk of the work with stripping and refurbishing the models. I'd like get them all cleaned and then primed before the end of summer and then I'll pick up factions here and there whenever I feel like painting.
This is all a little overwhelming trying to catch up on everything and diving this heavily back in to a hobby after a break. I'd love any sort of feedback or advice from anyone, especially on lists for all those factions that I'm not super familiar with. Once I get the chance I'll take some nice pictures of my current painted models collection and do update posts when I paint new models. For now, I'm just here to read and chat.
Thanks
