So, I pre-ordered some Van Saar stuff, and grabbed a box of Orlocks, Eschers, and Goliaths. I have the books Gang War, Gang War 2. I also have a lewd amount of the Mechanicus terrain.

I also have chaos cultists in two flavors (the old metal ones, and the new ones) as well as a box of Genestealer Cultists.

Do I need to buy the Necromunda boxed game?

Even if I don't 'need' it, is it usable with gangs other than Eschers and Goliaths, or is it basically just another GW board game that only uses those two gangs?

I mean, the box has the core rules , which are needed to play he game but can be found elsewhere if you look.
It also had the tiles and terrain for zone mortalis , which are very nice. Not essential tho.
Dice and tokens are handy but not really needed.

FWIW
I bought the rules for my gang and have a summary of the core rules.
I have a mate with the boards and a game club with its own zone mortals board (which is awesome ) so passed on he core box.
I bought my gangs dice And tactics cards.
You can manage with d6, but the dice are nice. The cards are useful for gaming. They kind of trick your into thinking you need to buy all the sets.. which is mean lol.

Ah, that's fine. I can easily use more gang members. After all, it did occur to me the other day that for Shadow War (or even 40k) that I could use the gang members as Inquisitorial Acolytes or some even as Guardsmen. So no value lost in that, I suppose.

Now my question is- can you play the 'box game' with other gangs?

I believe a standard box loadout for the orlocks can be found. Probably on the necromunda website .

I just picked up the box set as the Van Saar stuff finally pushed me over the edge. The main book has all the rules for Goliath and Escher but none of the missions are gang specific. If you have Gang War 2 and 3 then I don't see why you couldn't use Orlock or Van Saar.

You don't have to use the suggested load outs they give in Underhive.

As mentioned before you can probably find the rules if you look, and nothing is do-or-die essential, but getting the box probably wouldn't hurt. You get a bunch of useful stuff, tokens for representing various game states, the dice (or extra dice if you already have the themed ones), rule book and reference sheets...

the tiles are very good to have even if you're doing a campaign and if you don't have more people on board, it's almost necessary to help get people interested in the game. It's not so intimidating if they are approaching the game first as what seems like a quasi-board game and the visuals will be more appealing. Also good to mix up campaign games.

the extra escher and goliath sprues are useful down the line if you want to combine them with the forgeworld sets giving them different weapons (which you might likely want to do eventually) or just convert your own.

You might have in your area more veterans who basically have all the stuff. You can just use their stuff when you play. If so, i think you might get by without the core box... just picking up the extra little items as you go as you really need them. But if you are looking to recruit more people who aren't familiar to the game to play in a campaign you almost need the box.

Okay, thanks to literally everyone here. You have been a great help.

Bought a lot of Van Saar dudes. Campaign gang assembled, skirmish gang comes later.

Bought all the books, and the box. The boxed game is really good. And once I get the hang of it, it will work great for a learning/ teaching tool. I really dig the idea of the board as the Zone Mortalis corridor game type, because I will be working on the Mechanicus Terrain for a while. Maybe later I will get proper Zone Mortalist tiles.

Managed to find buyers for the Eschers and Goliaths, or rather- trades for more Van Saar boxes [SCREECHES IN TERMINAL ILLNESS]

Mob Rule is not a rule.

They don't fit well with the boxed game. The boxed game got a different and highly limited skill set. The box set got different costs, stats, no juves, no heavy weapons, not really much of anything.

Strongly suggests going for the Gang War 1-2-3 system, even for skirmish games. The boxed game was dead from start, and it doesn't really match any other gangs or weapons than those models that came with it.

One could argue otherwise, fully painted terrain could attract much more attention than a 2d cardboard printed game table (with some doors and terrain on it).

I think they both have potential. Fully painted terrain takes time and is difficult to transport.

I suppose that I meant it can be intimidating. I come across many people who shy away from things that are too wargamey... for example they might see a game of 40k that's clearly a large outlay of resources and time, and prefer boardgames, DnD or collectible card games.

Really it's good to do both because it welcomes different types of people to the game, hopefully once they experience it they get hooked or not.

Yes I agree, both ways could attract a lot of people in different ways.

If you have a good FLGS with shelves of terrain it helps so much. I am thankful of mine. We also have a few friends with dedicated gaming basements with their own as well. I understand that is not the case for everyone though.

Hey everyone looking for some advice in starting Necromunda.

So I came across the factionrules for GSC in March's edition of White Dwarf. If I want to play GSC in Necromunda what do I need? I presume the core-set is a good start but do I need the two other books that have been released? Also, I saw a new tile set expansion - Badzone Delta 7 - Is that needed for the core game as well or is it an "expansion" and just makes the game better?

My wargaming group is doing a 6 week Necromunda Campaign so any help would be appreciated as I never played Necromunda before and would love to give my GSC army a go before the Codex drops for them and distracts me. Cheers for all the help.

If your group is doing a campaign then I would try to borrow the rules for a bit off them. If you want to play your own games then you would need to pick up the core box as a minimum. If you want to play on anything other than the 2d tiles then you also need the first gang war book. The Bad one Delta set is just an optional extra and I think you need Gang War 2 for the relevant special rules for them.

Please excuse any spelling errors. I use a tablet frequently and software keyboards are a pain!

If you want to play Genestealer Cult gang, you need one Leader (this could be anything from a Magus or other HQ to a squad sergeant), two Acolytes (champions), preferably 1 or 2 aberrants and a bunch of gangers carrying shotguns/lasguns/autoguns. That's a bare minimum. If you want to go extra and try additional things, you can add in a heavy stubber or one of those unique mining heavy weapons, maybe a couple of special weapons like webber, flamer, grenade launcher or plasma.

On an Express Elevator to Hell!!

I'm doing a GSC force myself at the moment, I would buy in this order:
1 ) 40k Genestealer Neophyte Hybrid set. It's possible (although not ideal) to make an entire gang from just this boxset - you have a number of different weapons options, can make the 'specialist' with heavy weapon and leader.
2) Genestealer acolyte hybrid set. I've made my acolytes and leader from this set. It's handy for having the extra arm sculpts and some special weapons.

In-between these two boxes you will have enough for your basic gang plus a fair amount of expansion.

The Aberrant suffers from being a miniature only available in the Deathwatch: Overkill boxset. So you can either spend £100 for that(!) or try and buy the miniatures from a bits site (which are generally all out of stock, I think I checked pretty much all of them!) or buy from ebay. I have seen a set of 2 of them go for £30+ for an auction on ebay, which is ridiculous. If you are very keen and keep an eye on new auctions, you might be able to pick them up for £5-10 each on a buy-it-now auction, from a unwitting seller.
An alternative is to try a conversion or different miniature. The old Tyranid Broodlord is a pretty good substitute, and I've seen some really good conversions using Goliaths from the boxset mixed with genestealer parts.
One thing is that they are pretty poor in the rules, so I think if you miss out (and just have neophytes and acolytes) it might actually be an improvement

A final note is that I think with Rules-as-Written the GSC are pretty useless and you will struggle. M4 is very odd (I think a mistype) and the Acolytes are absolutely useless. The 1W, low toughness and close-combat only weapons means that they need to run forward to engage and they will die - which in turn means no income for the gang.
An easy way around this (and a general suggestion I would make to anyone playing Necromunda) is to use the income and costing rules from classic Necromunda, which are much, much better if you want to run a balanced campaign.

Just built a Genestealer cult with plenty of options. Recommend the battleforce which will give you more than enough to fill out a gang. Had to pay big money for the aberrants at ebay :(

Even the vehicle in the box is useful now as a caravan for one of the new scenarios. The big genestealer can be used as a monster in the new scenarios too.

When talking about how underpowered the rules for genestealers are, I was really tempted to maybe use the Chaos cult rules for them? You could use an aberrant as spawn. Get cheaper gangers... Miss out on the cool weaponry though. Ritual chamber could be explained as some genestealer mind control...

You should be very happy you didn't find that profile in WD, cause (almost) every time they reprint a profile, it ends up being different. Just look at every single publication so far, Underhive, GW1, GW2, GW3, pdfs, Chaos Cult in WD, Genestealer Cult in WD. They use every chance to introduce conflicting profiles.
