I’ve lost my last four games of AoS with my Overlords. Before that, I achieved a minor victory against grots, but before that I lost something like 17 games in a row!

I’m obviously doing something wrong but I’m not sure what. I take Barak-Zilfin, I use the deepstriking clown car with as many endrinriggers as I can manage and I use the khemist to buff them. But my army always melts the second the enemy strikes back at me, which they always do because I’m terribly unlucky with the dice and they can withstand what I throw at them. People keep telling me the Overlords are a top tier force, and right now I feel like they’re trying to be funny.

How do the rest of you Overlord players do it?

The overlords are mostly a low middle tier army, meaning you will struggle against anyone that is remotely bringing a competitive min/max powerlist or close to one.

There is one exception. The overlords do have one build that is close to being a powergamer list, that involves cramming a lot of shooting into one of the boats. I don't know the details very well since no one here plays them since they are not competitively viable (to them) so you'll need to do some research.

Other than that... if you are playing in a casual environment against casual lists, iits all about target prioritization.

Sadly nobody I play against does causal lists. Everyone goes all out to win at all costs all the time.

I find the Overlords to be far too fragile to make it, and worse, their shooting isn’t exactly top tier either. Maybe my opponents are just really lucky (or I’m just unlucky) but they always make their saves against my cannons and skyhooks. Both of which are outranged a lot of the time too. Also, ever notice how dispossessed and freeguild firearms wound on 3+ and have -1 rend, but ours only wound on a 4+ and sometimes don’t have rend? Weird. And the less said about the crappy saves of the ships the better.

I would prefer it if privateer pistols wounded on a 3+ and had -1 rend, even at the cost of reducing the range to 9” and attacks to 1. They might actually kill something then.

In the environment you are in, you'll definitely want to research the one clowncar netlist that the overlords have then. Otherwise you'll need to switch armies, or hope that GHB 2018 actually balances some of the garbage in the game (I wouldn't hold my breath but who knows)

The clown car list is to simply stuff as many endrinriggers into an ironclad as possible with a khemist (or khemists) buffing them yes? So boring.

I’m really banking on GHB 2018 helping us out. The last one was outright cruel to the Overlords, wrecking Thunderers and making our battalions prohibitively expensive. But I wouldn’t count on it.

The Overlords should be a small, elite, fast moving glass cannon army, but as it currently stands we’re only small.

Overlords are decently balanced, meaning they will lose to WAAC or high-tier armies. It doesn't mean they are weak, it just means they aren't overpowered.

Thunderers are fine now overall, they were stupid OP before because of mortar spam. However their weapon options outside the default rifles & the fumigator were over-nerfed and kind of suck now, especially the mortar. But 4 rifles + 1 fumigator is totally worth 100 pts.

That said, Khemists, Endrinmasters, Gunhaulers, and Frigates could all use a 20 point drop. And the battalions obviously cost way too much. The Ironclad should really go up 20-40 points though. They are also pretty rigid in battleline, something I strongly suspect GHB3 will deal with (I'd like to see Thunderers & Skywardens be battleline with Kharadron allegiance).

It might be me but Sigmar seems to have really weird balance. Very few armies are OP but they get seen a lot so it appears things like Overlords are weak. At least it seems that way.

That is a very astute statement and I agree. In the online world of wargaming, the most powerful of armies are usually what you'll see a lot of, and the others you won't see a lot of at all, which will give the illusion that they are crap.

I know that deep down this conception I have of the Overlords being weak is all in my head. I just see the stormcast throwing out all that damage and weathering everything in return and I think...damn we're weak.

Stormcast are the 2nd top army after Tzeentch, I wouldn't put too much meaning in it.
