What's the craziest moment you've had in a game? The moment that you always bring up with your friends with, "Remember that time?"

For me it was my first full game of 40k in 6th. I had mostly been tabled by a Imperial Guard player. He was mostly tanks, artillery with a few screening infantry squads. I had 2 sets of Dark Vengeance box sets of Dark Angels. This meant I had nothing that could even scratch his tanks as the highest AP you get in the boxes are Plasma, so the match didn't exactly go well. HOWEVER, on the last turn the only unit left on the field was my Chapter Master.

Last turn my master was out of site of his tanks, so they couldn't swing. He charged my Master with roughly 40 guardsmen and he stayed alive through the entire assault. He survived something 40 to hits and 25 to wound rolls with only 1 roll hurting him. We can safely say he was blessed by the Emperor for a sweet moment. Game ended and he strode with his head high off the battlefield to rebuild the company.

New Hampshire, USA

It was June 6th 2006. My Ultramarines vs Tyranids in a 2500pt friendly match. Slaughter one another on the clubs brand new desert canyon themed table.

My list (if memory serves):

Chapter Master (Ld 10 army wide)
Chaplain w/ jump pack
10 tac Las Plasma
10 tac Las Plasma
10 tac Melta Plasmacannon
10 tac Melta Plasmacannon
10 vet CCW
10 assault
6 termies 2 Assault cannons (those were the days)
2 landspeeders HB AC
Whirlwind
2 rhinos
8 dev 4 missiles
8 dev 4 HB
Possibly 2 pre ads

I don't remember his list but it was a wide variety of units.

The opening shots of the game targeted a unit of hormagaunts directly across the table. The shots missed and I took it as a bad omen. However, during the entire game, any tyranids unit that moved over those terrain features had the worst rolls in the history of difficult terrain tests.

That odd quirk resulted in allowing my units to consistly reposition and create overlapping fields of fire in an incredibly efficient and fluffy manner.
The game was full of tense moments and deep tactical though. You would have thought we were competing for a praze or trophy with how much effort we were considering each move and action.

There was only a single fluke in the game in which we were so caught up in certain areas of the battle that we forgot about a unit of gargoyles that had deepstruck into my lines threatening my HB devs and landspeeders. When the moment came that we realised I had gained a major tactical advantage, having not been charged by the gargoyles, I targeted the gargoyles with the HB devs because it seemed logical in fluff terms and a "duh, they're right in your face, kill them!!!". In reality, it would have been better to use their weight of fire on something else at the time.

In the end I was victorious. I tabled the tyranids and in return only lost an assault cannon off a landspeeder and about 4 random space marines from different squads.

My opponent, despite the "crushing defeat" was an incredible sport about the entire game. The game itself was something of a big deal for a short while at the club because it was a new table being broken in with 2 large, fully painted armies.

I still see that opponent from time to time. We once tried to make plans for a 10 year anniversary game but we were too busy to meet up (And I would have had to travel to another state to borrow my friends Ultramarine army).

A fond memory.

>3k pts/side, 6thE, my entire SM collection vs my "nemisis"'s entire CSM collection (minus a few models to balance points). We did this a number of times as our collections grew.

So the armies were mostly Tacs, Devs, ASMs, Rhinos, etc, and their CSM counterparts - filled with a bunch of other stuff too, of course.

Goes the full 7 rounds.

Bottom of 7th, he's got 2 CSM running but not off the table, one Havoc, and an unhurt Demon Mace Chaos Lord on a Bike with toys. I've got one TH/SS Sarge, two naked Tacs, and a TH/LC JP Captain, but I don't have StW, he does.

My TH/LC JP Captain manages to charge the Lord, and manages to survive and drop him in 1 round of CC.

3k points and we each have almost no models left on the board.

I barely eak out the win by 1 CP.

Great game.

I posted this before, but this is mine:

My son asked me to play a game with him using his First Strike set. We have the full rule book, some codexes, and lots of other models, but he wanted to use just the contents of his First Strike set, plus one additional model for each side. He played the Primaris Space Marine army and added a Space Marine dreadnought to his forces. I played the Death Guard army and added a tyranid maleceptor to my forces.

After doing the roll-off and deployment, my son got to go first. He moved his reavers up behind a building for cover, moved his dreadnought forward on the battlefield and moved his intercessors ahead. His attacks were furious, but only resulted in the slaying of one Death Guard marine.

On my turn, after all of my units had moved, the maleceptor used his psychic ability to Smite an enemy intercessor for 2 damage. Then, after all of my units succesfully charged, one Space Marine was killed.

Play went back and forth in typical fashion until all of my Poxwalkers and Death Guard Marines had been slain. But no worries as my maleceptor still had all 12 wounds left. My son's team had lost the intercessor unit, had 4 wounds left for his dreadnought, and still had the full reaver squad left with no damage.

On his turn, he scored a close combat hit during the Fight phase that did 9 damage to my maleceptor. Ouch! Being wounded, the maleceptor fought back, but with less strength and accuracy, and missed.

My only chance was to finish off the dreadnought and then take out the reavers. I needed to inflict 4 wounds to destroy the dreadnought. During my psychic phase, I was able to inflict one mortal wound to the dreadnought. 3 to go. During the fight phase, my maleceptor scored 3 hits, followed by 3 successful wound rolls, which was more difficult considering the lower maleceptor stats due to his wounds. The dreadnought failed his saves for all 3 wounds.

Thinking I now only had to survive against the 3 reavers, my son gets a big smile on his face. He reminds me that his dreadnought has one more important ability. It explodes when it dies, and on a roll of 6, it causes D3 damage. Ok, I thought, he probably won't roll a 6, and even if he does, he'll probably do 1 or 2 damage, still leaving my maleceptor alive.

He rolls his explosion roll and gets a 6. He rolls his D3 damage roll and gets a 5, which causes 3 damage, ending the game in a glorious explosion, taking out my maleceptor, and leaving his reavers alive to celebrate their victory.

Tension was high, the battle felt very balanced, and the ending was so epic that even though I lost, I wouldn't have wanted it to end any other way.

A couple of my favorite moments.

1) In the early days of 6th edition (before the 6th edition Eldar codex was even released!). I was playing my Eldar vs Grey Knights. The game was going back and fourth and was pretty even at this point. I had put some pain on a Dread Knight with my Fire Dragons but did not kill it, leaving it at one wound. On my opponents turn the Dread Knight lights up the Dragons and kills all but one. He charges the lone Fire Dragon with the Dread Knight. The Fire Dragon declares a melta bomb, and stoically watches the Dread Knight either miss or fail to wound with all of its attacks. The Fire Dragon sticks a Melta Bomb casually killing the knight and raising to the rank of Exarch.

2) Playing Warhammer Fantasy in 8th Edition. Orcs and Goblins vs Warriors of Chaos. I had a Black Orc BSB with the Trickster's Helm (+1 Armor and enemy rerolls successful wounds) joined up with a massive squad of Orc Big Uns. A huge brawl breaks out in the middle of the table between a large block of Warriors of Chaos and my Boyz. I'm consistently losing combat, but my massed ranks keep me in the fight with steadfast. Meanwhile, in successive challenges my BSB fights and defeats the unit Champ, the Chaos BSB, and a Chaos Sorcerer allowing the Orcs to prevail overall. The blessing of Gork and Mork is superior to that of any Chaos God.

3) Recently I was playing Bolt Action with my Soviets against a hyper elite German SS army. We were playing a capture the flag type scenario where either side would win if we had a unit in contact with the enemy objective at the start end of a game turn. I had launched a huge infantry assault on my opponents objective, but good rolls on his part and some well placed machine gun fire cut down my infantry squads. In the end I was left with a single Veteran NCO with an SMG close to the opponents objective, but not close enough to reach it. Praising the motherland that NCO heroically (or desperately depending on how you look at it) ran towards the objective and came within three inches of it. My opponent decides to be cute, and with his last activation of the turn charges my lone NCO with his full 3 man Officer team. Lady Luck was with the Russians that day, and the SS Officer team spectacularly failed to wound with all 3 attacks. My NCO for his part rolled a 5 on his attack, then a 6 on his tough fighter attack, killing two. The Officer team was swept off the board, and the lone NCO consolidated the remaining inches onto the objective, winning the game for the Russians and earning himself the Hero of the Soviet Union award.

Somewhere over the rainbow, way up high

I was playing a game in...maybe 6th ed with my marines vs chaos demons.

The game was a bloodbath. everything was dying left and right. At the end of the final round, I had 1 single scout, and I think 2 tanks caught in melee with a bloodthirster.

I had objectives, but my scouts had been killed off theirs. Meaning the game would end, and my opponent would win.

The following ALL HAPPENED to allow me to pull out the win

My 1 scout is in combat with 3 plague drones, 1 has 1 wound left.

MY scout swings with 1 attack...hits on a 3.
My scout wounds on a 5+
The demon fails his 3+ armor save, causing a casualty.

The 2 drones swing back, scoring 3 of 6 hits.
The 3 hits translate into 2 wounds.
I make both saves.
The demons FAIL demonic instability, and DIE to morale.
I need a 6 on a d6 to consolidate back into scoring range of the objective.
I roll as 6.

We roll for game end.

The game ends with the most narrow victory i've ever seen.

The store was having a birthday event so there was a game of about 8 people in Kill Team. Through (bad) luck of the dice I was going last. I got through most of the first turn unscathed until it came to the Tau player just before me who shot me with basically everything and my Eldar decided that the best thing to do would be dying to every shot that hit them. Then I failed my Morale and apparently that meant the whole army fell back right off the board. Some people lose first turn but I lost before even that.

It's a minor thing, but it made me happy (and really annoyed my opponent)...

CSM vs. T'au. He sends a wounded Hammerhead toward my lascannon Havocs to charge them and shut them down for a turn, to let his other tanks keep tearing me up. One Havoc scores a 6 to hit, and it wounds, and it goes through. Hammerhead has five wounds left... I roll a 5. No explosion.

My immediate next shooting round, las/missile Helbrute takes aim at an untouched Sky Ray. Twin lascannon hits with both, wounds, and I go for damage... double 6s. Krak missile finishes the job. My opponent was none too pleased at this point.

Lost the battle by a single point, but man... it felt good.

Another pleasant story of a great moment...

During...4th edition? Using the same space marine army I mentioned above I entered a tournament about an hour drive away from home.
I invited my friend to go with me and spend the night for a second day at the miniature con event. We made plans on the fly and planned to crash in my van overnight since it was taking place at a college I had attended and I still had a valid parking sticker.
We were in such a rush to be early and fully wysiwyg that my friend was basing some of my models for me while trying to keep balance in the back of my empty van.

So we arrive, I see that the event is having a dual category art contest, a 100(?) player DnD event, MTG tourney, guest speakers, rogue trader tourney, all kinds of stuff we didn't expect. So I ran back to my van and grabbed my art portfolio. I entered my drawing of a mix of imperial characters for the black and white category and my dark elf in the color category (if you look in my profile you can view a wide range of my art and photos (including the friend I'm talking about in this story and his home made lasgun paintball marker).

So we enter the rogue trader with my Ultramarines and his Necrons. He had never beaten me but he was new to the game and had yet to really figure his army out. This would also be his first ever tournament of any kind.

His first round he faced the worst kind of opponent for such an outing. The poor guy was mentally and physically disabled and had unsightly hygiene issues. On top of that he also played Necrons with a nearly identical list. My friend refuses to talk about this particular day and begins dry heaving (lol which my phone autocorrected to "drug saving" lol) if I accidentally bring it up in conversation.

My first round was against Dark Eldar whom I stomped flat by setting up sniper scouts (this makes me realise it isn't the exact same army as my previous story... Hmm) in a position to take out his Archon with that 2+ Invul.

My friends second game was against an unpainted, hastily assembled SOB army. This upset us both as the rules stated all armies must be painted and wysiwyg "No Exceptions". My friend and I were the only 2 people that met that criteria.

My second game was against an Ork player who won Best Sportsman" and he rightly deserved it.

Our final game was against each other. By this point I had already talked up a mount of trash and taunts. My friend is furious and claiming he knew it would happen and now he was going to lose to me yet again in an official setting with a room full of witnesses (including a Dance Dance Revolution contest that was won by a woman who couldn't have been less than 300 lbs and I don't mean that in a negative way... That big girl could dance).

Our game lasted so long that the other games ended and the room crowded around to watch the last two turns. It came down to a single die roll.

If his Necrons Lord with destroyer body rezzed on a 4+ and would count as having survived the game and result in his victory. If he failed the roll I would earn a victory point for slaying a unit and his warlord at the same time, pushing me past a draw into a victory.

He rolled a 1.

He won Best Painted.

I won Best Overall and got one of the wall mount Rogue Trader plaques.

After our game someone entered the room looking for me. I had won both art categories.

Another fond memory.

I barely remember any games before my return in 8th edition (last edition I played was 3rd!) but this happened two weeks ago and still makes me chuckle.

Trying out my new custodes force with a recently added Contemptor. Due to being baited by an intercessor squad, I'm caught out in the open around 9" away from a 5 man Hellblaster squad buffed by a captain.
He rolls for hits, gets 9, with one model going up in smoke from overcharging. He then precedes to fluff all but 3 of his wound rolls, and I make 2 of them on a 6+. I then proceeded to roll double 6 on the FNP roll the custodes Contemptor has.

Next turn, I charge the squad, who hit nothing on my Contemptor with overcharged overwatch. I proceed to hit with all my attacks and wound with all my attacks, and proceed to stomp the Hellblaster into pancakes.

Needless to say, it made our spectators laugh.

My "craziest" battles have both been taking out enemy armies in a single turn. Usually because they pack everything in reserve, and then I catch what they have on board by surprise.

One time it was a squad of Immo-Dom who got around a GK Dreadnought that was the only enemy board presence, and another time it was my Shadowsword that got a lucky 6 targeting a Tervigon hiding mostly behind a hill.

In terms of the most epic battle I've had, it was a fairly massive game against my friend who plays tyranids on a ping-pong table. I had one corner, where there was a bunch of buildings and a little bit of low perimeter wall and barbed wire and tank obstacles, and then out across the rest of the board was a warren of canyons and ridges, with some small bridges over the canyons.

It was an amazing battle, with swarms of gribblies running up through the canyons like the living tide Tyranids are while guardsmen stood on the ramparts and artillery and tanks blasted chunks out of the swarm as they ran through chokepoints, and then the trygons and mycetic spores landed in my artillery park and my forces were fighting in all directions. In the end, I drove him back, but it was close and it was memorably fun.

Guardsmen, hear me! Cadia may lie in ruin, but her proud people do not! For each brother and sister who gave their lives to Him as martyrs, we will reap a vengeance fiftyfold! Cadia may be no more, but will never be forgotten; our foes shall tremble in fear at the name, for their doom shall come from the barrels of Cadian guns, fired by Cadian hands! Forward, for vengeance and retribution, in His name and the names of our fallen comrades!

It was some years ago another edition. My black templars faced dark eldars in a jungle terrain. One of my tactical squads on a hill had been reduced heavily and a wounded talos was closing in. Only the sergeant named Kell with his plasma pistol and power axe lived after the beast had killed the other survivours with shooting. As it charged Kell wounded it with his pistol on overwatch. Then Kell survived it's attacks as if the emperor himself had made the talos fail it's attacks. But the true miracle happened as Kell himself rolled perfectly and finnished the monstrosity off with his axe. Alone but defiant he remained on that hill!

Brutal, but kunning!

I was running 7th edition Tau in a local RTT and my opponent for the game was running a very nasty Necron Decurion list (remember those?). His main killy thing was a deathstar unit of Lychguard with a bunch of different characters mixed in, in order to have layered saves and rerolls out the ass. On my first turn, despite running a Riptide wing I did very little damage (I didn't pop the shoot twice thing with the 'tides). On his first turn, he used whatever relic thing to teleport his deathstar and deep strike it behind my lines. He rolls an 11 for scatter distance and ends up off the board. He rolls on the mishap table and gets a 1, meaning his entire 800 or so point deathstar just vaporized. He conceded the game right then and there. Our gaming group still gives him crap about that one and we bring it up pretty often.

The March of Death: I believe it was 3rd edition, my Crimson Fists vs Catachan Imperial Guard in a 2000 point game. In my list I had a 10 man Assault Squad with 2 plasma pistols, a power sword wielding veteran sergeant, and everyone had melts bombs. They charge up the left flank and on their first shot both plasma pistol guys overheat and die, the rest of their pistol fire causes a squad of Guardsmen to fall back out of charge range and they are stuck out in the open. I figure they’re toast for sure but my opponent guns for the rest of the army instead because the assault squad is miles away from any objectives and horribly outnumbered. Some how I lose one more guy to incidental lashing fire and most of my army takes a real beating. I assume the game is as good as lost but I don’t give up.

And then the Emperor himself blesses these 7 brave assault marines.

For the next few turns they proceed to saw their way through an entire IG army. Squad after squad gets shot, stabbed, and run down. Leman Russ tanks explode to meltabomb attacks, Sentinels are crushed beneath their boots. Every bullet they fired was blessed, every attack delivered by Rogal Dorn himself. Horrific amounts of gunfire patters uselessly from their armor and they single handed wipe out about 3/4 of my opponent’s force.

By the end of the game they’d killed 2 tanks, 3 Sentinels, and a ghastly number of infantry. Most incredibly, after failing the first 3 armor saves they had to take in the game, they then proceeded to pass 53 straight 3+ saves (I kept track...) and the remaining 7 brothers survived the battle. I’m not sure what the odds of that are, but they are hallowed heroes to this day.

7th Edition: I had a unit of 5 Fire Warriors with EMP grenades take on an Imperial Knight with 3 HP. They threw a grenade and got the hit to bring it down to 2 HP before charging in. Lost 4 FWs to the Knights's melee swings and stomps but CC landed another EMP hit to bring the knight down to 1 HP. Made my leadership 4 roll so the lone FW stayed locked in combat. Next round the Knight whiffed all the melee attacks except for one and the Knight rolled a 1 on the D table. The FW made his melee attack with the EMP grenade and got the hit, rolled a 6 to wound (penetrating hit for the insult to injury), and the Knight went nuclear, scattered, but the FW made his save (thanks to some ruins) and survived. Some scions attempted to get revenge for the fallen knight but the lone FW in ruins was able to endure their shooting as the game ended. It was a loss by this point and I only had something like 4 models survive but that FW was one of the 4 to make it. Funny enough the very first move of that game was my piranha getting immobilized on some terrain and thus ended up being a lawn ornament for the entire game, it also was one of the 4 remaining models.

Another battle was my Orks getting royally hosed by a transport heavy Necron list except for my Warboss + Boyz/PK Nob unit that through a series of multi charges, lucky leadership rolls (crons staying locked in combat on a leadership 4 morale check), and some savage Klaw usage by the PK Nob and the Warboss. In total the Warboss and PK nob (along with the conga line of boyz grabbing things in multi charges) probably killed close to half of a 2000 point Necron army.

A tactical marine sergeant killed a Kroot Shaper and caused the full unit of Kroot to flee, and he ran them down on the sweep. Still lost the game, but the Sergeant made it out alive.

Another sergeant beat a Nurgle Sorceror Lord on bike while wielding a chainsword in a single round of combat. Won me my first game of 7th.

I fired a Vindicator shell into a Leman Russ, had it scatter so all 3 tanks in the squad were hit, reuslting in two exploding and the third being unable to shoot next turn. Needless to say bad things happened to those treacherous Guardsmen.

A squad of Guardsmen survived a Death Company charge and fought the black berserkers off. I like to imagine they were commendated then executed for daring to assault a member of the Holy Adeptus Astartes.

Witch Hunter Captain in Mordheim charged a Vampire Lord and brought him down in one round. The look on my friends face was priceless, especially after he rolled injuries after the game.

I’ve had three moments that truly brought home what we play the game for, some legendary clashes!

3: Kharn singlehandedly slays Zhufor and a retinue of terminators to prove who truly is the blood gods favoured son (7th ed game)

2: The Swarmlord casts the horror and paroxysm on a unit of deathshroud terminators that had deepstruck with Typhus. Wades into combat and manages to kill them all in 2 rounds of combat.

1. Bought my friend a baneblade for his birthday and we played a 3000 point game of floorhammer to test it out. I was using Magnus for the first time. About halfway through the game after the baneblade had me picking up unit after unit, Big Red turns his attention towards it- gaze of Magnus goes off, rolls a 6 on the D weapon chart, another 6 to make it explode! The resulting explosion wipes out everything else in the vicinity. I lost that game in the end but what a shot that was.

Craziest for me personally? I have four, all in 3rd Edition.

The first was a game against Eldar with my Crimson Fists. I was running Captain Cortez and he was running Eldrad. Cortez managed to slaughter his way through Eldrad, his Warlock retinue, a Striking Scorpions squad, a Warp Spider squad, and punch kill a Falcon in the rear armor. Mostly this was due to some stellar rolling on my part, and casualties padded by the veteran squad Cortez had escorting him. Still, at 116 pts. he MORE than did his share.

The second was a battle against another Eldar army with my Fists. Special characters stayed home. In the middle of the game my Vets got charged by a Swooping Hawks squad that contained an Exarch with Web of Skulls and Sustained Assault. After a truly obscene batch of rolling, using the stores bucket of random dice at that, he wound up getting 29 St 4 power weapon attacks vs. that squad. Yeah, they wound up getting scooped.

The third was my Fists vs. Dark Eldar. I got first turn and landed a Whirlwind shot onto his Raider containing his Archon and Incubi retinue. I scored two hits because blast vs. open topped, +1 to the damage chart because open topped, and Ordinance chart because the Whirlwind still counted as Ordinance despite only being St. 5. I wound up getting a Vehicle Annihilated result that popped the entire embarked unit, and clipped two squads in the explosion. My opponent was anti-Whirlwind for a while after that.

The fourth was an Eldar vs. Fists fight with the Eldrad guy, but no Special Characters in a league thing we had set up. I had engaged his Avatar with my Sniper Scouts, and wound up getting 6 wounds. He rolled his saves, and all 6 dice came up 1's. Another Eldar player was at the table next to us and had glanced over for this round of shooting, saw the roll, and called out "YAHTZEE!"

Nor for NOT mine, also in 3rd, my brother and my friend Greg were playing Dark Eldar and Necrons respectively. The mission? TO THE DEATH!!!!!!!!!!! Yeah, we were bored, caffeinated, and had all night. It came down to his Necrons chasing down a lone Blaster armed Warrior who kept passing his All Alone check. Final moment of the game, check passed, Warrior braces himself and fires, slagging a Necron. The PRECISE wound needed to kick off the Phase Out rule.

1 of my first games ever. I was playing CSM vs my buddies SM. A rhino was down to one hull point and tank shocked lysander. He misses his attack and goes down in glory. We had to take a fifteen minute break dying from laughter.

My 3 man team of Vanguard are holding my opponents defend objective marker, they have lost 2 guys to shooting and take a charge from a space marine Captain with thunder hammer.

Captain smash causes 4 wounds, my opponent, feeling comfortable asks if i want to concede it's his turn 6 and I've got nothing that can target his captain left.
Instead, I pass 2 of my 6up saves and leave my Alpha with taser goad, rather than a plasma guy ( i need to be lucky to not lose my last guy on morale) at -4 , Opponent while annoyed is confident that he's going to squish my guy next turn
will take the objective if i run or if the game goes onto turn 7 this will most likely pull out a win.

Instead, my alpha strikes back scoring 2 6's to hit, Tasing into 6 hits which all proceed to wound ... my opponent rolls 4 ones ( he'd lost a wound to a sniper rifle turns ago ) and his captain collapses in a bloody heap at the foot of my alpha ...
alpha adds insult to injury by rolling a 1 for his morale check.

The game does go on to turn 7 where my opponent fires everything at the alpha, who promptly dies but the damage is done and he can't get anything close enough to capture the objective.
I have since rebased the alpha with some scrap marine shoulder pads and a helmet on his base.
