The VDR are 3rd edition; they were not continued into 4th. The book they were printed in is gone; it was one of the Chapter Approved.

As a rule of thumb, the designers do not hide "easter eggs" in the rules. If clever reading is required to unlock some sort of hidden option, then it is most likely the result of wishful thinking.

But there's no sense crying over every mistake;

Of course they were. 4th Edition merely replaced the core rules, it didn't invalaidate everything else already in place.

Given that the VDR were optional rules requiring your opponent's consent anyway, they're every bit as valid to use now as they ever were.

Well, not quite. They are merely rules that provide a framework for you to design rules for custom-built vehicles. They didn't really put too much effort into balancing the VDR... they just upped the points costs to try to keep the worst of the possible abusive combinations under control and encourage people to use them for fun instead of to build game-winning vehicles, which is why they required opponent's consent.

Iwasn't saying they were invalid; they just haven't been actively maintained by GW as "current" materials. If everything from 3rd was invalid now, there'd be some pissed Eldar players.

well, they said more than once, if you create a Vehicle for the effect it will have in your games, then you are using them wrong...
I wonder how Non-Ork players used them?
