I have recently been doing a lot of Historical games and I have been having a lot of fun. I have mostly been playing around with Greek Hoplites (Vs. Persians and each other) and Early Rome in Italy (Romans vs. Etruscans or Samnites or others). Of course, these are classic battles. I also have rules to test for the Wars of the Diadochi, Neo-Assyrian Empire, and the Roman Third Servile War. These are some of my favorite periods to put on the tabletop.

How about you?

Dark Ages for skirmish, but if it comes to big battle I love breaking out my Philistines for some Biblical Battles. Agreed though, I do have an affinity for my Carthaginians too

I like the late Roman Republic. It's well documented, full of ambitious colourful characters both among the Roman, their slaves and the surrounding states. While the Roman army is very powerful, the Roman are still capable of some nasty defeats.

I'm also a fan of the declining Roman Empire and Late Antiquity. Lots of new threats and my favourite Persian Empire.

I have some Bactrian/Indo Greek and Kushans and I'm interested in those Central Asian conflicts that happen on the other side of Persia. I've not really done anything here other than use the armies in all-comer games.

Something I like from computer games but have yet to bring over to tabletop is the more interesting periods of Chinese history from a military standpoint. Such as the Waring States period.

I like a mix.

We've used Ronin/En Garde! for some Athens vs Sparta skirmishing, and I'd like to eventually play Saga (Epic) with Athens vs Sparta, the Trojan War, or something semi-mythical with the Argonauts vs monsters.

I also enjoy late Roman up through the Norman conquest, but that isn't really ancient.

I've only really got my toe into the period so far and most of it is through media rather than history books.

So for Three Kingdoms I've played the Dynasty Warriors games (action), Romance of the Three Kingdoms (strategy) games and watched the Red Cliff movie. There is a 4x game called Oriental Empires that covers early Chinese state formation.

For Mongols Genghis Khan: And the Making of the Modern World by Jack Weatherford is a great read. Dan Carlin also has a good few podcast episodes on the Mongols but you now need to buy it.

The History of China podcast Link is where a lot of my knowledge comes from. They are currently on the Song dynasty. It's quite accessible and you can listen to it while painting.
