Hi there!
Pretty new to this game (though played a lot of 40k), and looking to get in to Sylvaneth. I have a couple of questions I'm struggling to answer with Google though:
1)
How many Wyldwoods do you think it's necessary for a Sylvaneth player to own to make proper use of what seems to be the allegiance's main unique feature? Assuming I'm working towards 2000 points.
Obviously at least one, as you get that for free regardless. But I'm a little concerned about how much money I'll need to spend on premium terrain to play this army properly. Am I hamstringing myself by sticking to one Wyldwood or should I really be getting more eventually?
2)
Battalions and 'super battalions'. As I understand it you have to pay the points costs for all battalions within a super battalion. Just to confirm, does this include the mandatory battalions or just the optional ones?
So as a specific example, I like the look of the Free Spirits and Forestfolk Battalions as I'll run Kurnoth Hunters and Dryads anyway, and they both give some very nice looking extra mobility options. That being the case, the Winterleaf Wargrove looks very interesting as I expect to be playing against Chaos quite a bit.
If I wanted to take all that, would I pay the costs for all 3 Winterleaf, Forestfolk and Free Spirits, or is the Forestfolk cost included in the Winterleaf cost?
Thanks for any help!

1) I recommend 2 (six forest bases). You honestly will have trouble fitting more than that on the board in most games. Keep in mind that the Wyldwood has to be placed at least 1" from other models on the board, which includes terrain, and each forest base has a massive footprint. If your opponent is even somewhat competent, he'll spread out his army in such a way that it makes it difficult to use more than couple Wyldwoods.
2) Yes, you have to pay for each battalion including the mandatory ones. The increased price of battalions after GHB2017 has made it a much more difficult choice. You have to really want the battalion bonuses if you're going to pay points for them instead of adding more models.

Cool thank you!
So if I get one set of woods initially, I'd be ok for a while and can eventually get a second one when close to finishing my army, and then call that it. Sounds reasonable!
That is as I suspected, so I'd be sinking 400 pts in that example just for special rules... Probably not worth it, though just taking one Battalion might be... Giving Durthu and 3 units of Hunters an extra move every turn for 90pts doesn't seem too bad! Guess I won't know for sure until I get some games in to test it.

I have a question that I may as well put here about forests. How do things like the Treelord Ancient ability and Sylvaneth summon spell work with forests? Do I pay for every forest that isn't there from the allegiance or just ones that don't come from any abilities or spells?

Not sure I understood your question, but I think this will answer it. You don't have to pay points for any Sylvanth Forests you put/summon on the battlefield aslong your army have the Sylvaneth Allegiance.

I'll try and phrase it better. The Treelord Ancient has an ability that summons a Forest. If I use this ability do I need to pay for the forest I summon?

No. Forests are always free for Sylvaneth.

Beautiful. Now I can summon a bunch of forests and make terrible jokes about it.
