I've been playing around with some options for Company Veterans recently since they are priced the same as Sternguard Veterans, and their upgrades seem more versatile and cheaper then Sternguard.

So far, i'm playing with the idea of running a full 5 man Vet squad with uniform special weapon loadouts (Full Plas, Full Melta) and dropping them down in priority areas with a DP as a sort of suicide squad.

They work out cheaper then sternguard loaded with the equivalent combi-weapon, and can have a cheap SS on top of their special weapon to boot.

Vet w/ Plas = 29 (34 w/ SS)
Stern w/C-Plas = 31 (36 w/ SS)

Vet w/ Melta = 33
Stern w/ C-Melta = 35

Has anyone else ran Company Vets like this? And what role do Sternguard perform now, since I would argue Veterans are better?

I think Sternguard only have a role if you keep them equipped with their special issue bolters, rather than swapping to combi-weapons. This also lets them benefit from the +1 to wound rolls strategem, which company veterans can't use. If you're going to give them special weapons though, I agree that company vets are the way to go.

I have some combi gravs hanging around, do you think they will work on vets?

If you ever play with "that guy" remember this :
"there may be times when you are not sure exactly how to resolve a situation that has come up during play. When this happens, have a quick chat with your opponent and apply the solution that makes the most sense to both of you (or seems the most fun!), If no single solution presents itself, you and your opponent should roll off, and whoever rolls the highest gets to choose what happens." The only other niche role Sternguard have is if you need more than 5 bodies. With the rule of 3, this may come into effect, but I still doubt it.
