I just ordered a vintage Leman Russ for a very good price of 24 bucks, and I'm wondering, how small is it compared to the newer Leman Russes? I do not know the year, but it is quite old looking, if that makes sense.
The Leman Russ:

Any comparisons between the new and old one would be grand.

Same exact size. If there is any difference it's tiny. The turret is a different shape, and the bits are different. It was more a re-tooling.

Ah, thanks.

Any ideas on a good paint scheme? I'm thinking feldgrau and OD from Vallejo, because I want my vehicles dark, to contrast my screaming skull uniformed troops.

The old LRBT track assembly is a nightmare, the turret joint is larger than the new one’s; so the old turret only can fit the old chassis, the resin FW turrets fit the old larger chassis joint.

How much of a nightmare? Like glue every bit of the tread nightmare?

No track guides like the new ones, have to glue in the wheels that go under them, a bit of a nuisance.

alignment nightmare, you have to be careful and tack them to fit right, otherwise you'll end up with a gap or have a piece of track stick way out.

This will be my greatest challenge yet. If I do not post to the forums about it in the next week or so, I may not have made it. Please, remember me. These treads may end up destroying me. If not, I will have overcome my greatest challenge (YET).

Isn't the one you bought (in the picture) already built?

Not quite Tamiya levels of madness. Individually mounted independent track links and suspension.

There were longer track pieces (multiple links) as well as single track links. The idea was that certain of the longer pieces went in certain areas, and the singles were used to "wrap" around the "corners" (5 points on each track unit).
The longest run went on the bottom, the next 2 longest were top and back angle run, then there were shorter pieces for the front slopes.

But you had to sandwich the wheels and rollers into the track unit sides as well.

Harder to assemble than a Rhino (which at the time was the original one, since the old Leman Russ was 2nd ed 40k).

I'm OVER 50 (and so far over everyone's BS, too).

^^ What Big Mac wrote

Ugh... A lot of my Russ's came from second hand sources, i would have to rip all the tracks off and relay them, nightmare! And sometimes the aforementioned dreaded gap would still occur but i could usually get it located on the underside where it wouldn't be noticeable. Though if you kit has the the accessory sprue and you use the track guards on your tank you're sorted coz you won't even have to glue the tracks the whole way round!

On a side note i prefer the older Russ design but each to their own as they say, i only have one of the newer ones and i built that as a punisher for my tank company commissar to ride in
