Introduction

Hello Kickstarter! I'm Jon and I am a hobbyist and collector just like you. I needed a solution to not only to display but also allow easy access to my collection, I found this in Detolf cabinet from IKEA. However, as with many hobbyists as my collection grew I soon ran out of shelving space. Our Detolf Acrylic Shelf Insert Kit or the Dasik for short can solve this problem.

The Problem

The Detolf cabinet looks great and is at a cost efficient price point, that said you only get a few shelves and lots of wasted head room above your collection. With the Dasik you can insert extra shelves into the cabinet to increase your shelving space and adjust the heights depending on your needs.

The Product

One kit includes 4 shelves and 16 corner connectors. Installation is as simple as bolting in the corner connectors level on to the internal Wire frame and then resting the acrylic shelf on top. The acrylic shelf insert kit is sturdy and will keep your collection secure.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Not the first to make extra shelf supports for the Detolf, but the first I've come across who'll send out the shelves to go with them

no more looking for somewhere to cut toughened glass or acrylic for you (this is why I've not bought some of the other supports I've seen)

Shipping within the UK comes up at £8 for a full kit (4 shelves & supports) so it may work less well for those in other countries (if you do back, or look do let us know the costs you see)

This looks very similar to a set I bought off eBay, for a similar price per shelf.

We'll find out soon enough eh.

Eh, looking at the stuff on ebay, the acrylic sheeting looks a lot thinner, you can see it bowing in the middle in a lot of the pics. I wouldn't trust a FW model or any metal stuff to most of them. These look fairly secure though.

I need to acquire plastic Skavenslaves, can you help?
I have a blog now, evidently. Featuring the Alternative Mordheim Model Megalist.

@Yodhrin

Which ebay ones are you referring to?

The Picture attached is has 12.5 kg weight on it. I doubt you would fit even 5 kg of metal or resin on one shelf.

I also attached my own personal cabinet for reference.

Man, I was so excited to back this, but that shipping to the US is killer...

Does anyone have any good recommendations on alternatives? Seems like getting custom cut glass to do this on my own would be similarly expensive.

2 sets of this product would set me back $111, almost enough to buy 2 new detolfs...

I've found a few on ebay and etsy and you're looking about $30 before shipping just for glass which about $10 in shipping. The U shaped piece is pretty easily sourced.

So you can save some money, if you can find a place to do the cutting for you you could save a lot more but there might be minimum order sizes.

Here's an old form post from years ago covering this modification you see in this KS http://www.tfw2005.com/boards/threads/ikea-detolf-modification-1-adding-additional-shelves.423114/

Find a sign shop or plastic shop and ask if they cut acrylic. or some window or bathroom place to cut and sand down glass.

those cable clamps are at the home depot.

the ks is a good deal and definitely worth not having to do it your self if you didnt have the means but dat shipping :/

I've heard of people in the US (where Detolfs are reasonably priced) Buying a detolf to use the 4 shelves it comes with as extras, then getting the "wall" glass cut down by a glazier to make extra shelves. I don't know US glass prices, but it was described as a cheaper way to get the glass than buying enough glass for more shelves.

I really think this is the way to go. I've been pricing things and it's $60 for a detolf State side and I can get 2 shelfs for $40 on ebay right now. Getting a custom cut shelf runs between $35-$50 per shelf just by calling local places. I don't even know if you need to call someone to cut it as glass cutting equipment is like $10 at most hardware stores.

Outside of that the cheapest solution appears to be tempered glass cutting boards from amazon for $12.

Do you have a Tap Plastic near you? They can cut clear acrylic shelves to any dimensions. Usually, if you get a large sheet which should be able to cut down to 4-16 shelves depending on what sizes they carry. You normally just pay for the sheet, the cuts are free, providing they are just straight square cuts all one size, nothing special about it. There are probably other places like Tap Plastic that are probably cheaper (like sign places) but I just tend to use them because of location.

I just bought a couple of acrylic display plinths for a couple of quid each. Found a place online (https://www.gpxgroup.com) that made them to 300mm square and 200mm depth which makes them almost as big as the normal shelves and almost spot on in the middle of the existing ones.

“Good people are quick to help others in need, without hesitation or requiring proof the need is genuine. The wicked will believe they are fighting for good, but when others are in need they’ll be reluctant to help, withholding compassion until they see proof of that need. And yet Evil is quick to condemn, vilify and attack. For Evil, proof isn’t needed to bring harm, only hatred and a belief in the cause.”

There's one up state that, based off their website, will do plexiglass for about $5.50 for 15"x11 1/4".

Ajax you might want to check my two post in this discussion here. I give parts and products for the clips (Amazon) and cut acrylic dimensions from TAP (you can order online) forine. Probably 50ish USD to double up the inserts on my display.

While the KS is cool it's really something easy to accomplish on your own if someone's already done the measurements and product discovery for you.

My kit has now arrived (what fun to have KS with a short turn around)

It's going to do exactly what it said it would so if you're somewhere the postage isn't going to kill you it's a solution I can recommend once it goes on general sale
