Hi,
I wonder how you TS generals painted the Gold Trim on your rubrics / scarabs.
The GW Method is apparentely Retributor Armor Spray, Fleshshade, drybrush with sigmarite.
Since I think drybrushing is too messy, I was thinking of Retributor Armor, Fleshshade, Liberator gold Edge Highlights and extreme Edge with Stormhost silver.
But I'm actually undecided it comes off too dark and maybe use Liberator Gold as a full highlight and edge with the silver after that.
Other method would probably be the 'old' gold: Blathasar, Gehennas Gold and Auric armor.
What did you use and did it went well?`I would appreciate some thoughts or experiences.

Retributor Armor, Agrax Earthshade, then edge highlights of Balthazar Gold and Stormhost Silver. Made it a bit rustic but still very shiny.
Edit: Forgot to mention, I also had a white primer undercoat before I put the gold on, and did the gold first.

I don't want to spend too many hours picking armour trims and highlighting them. My quick and easy method is Retributor Armour basecoat followed by layer of Liberator Gold and Reikland Fleshshade Gloss. I always paint metallics among the first colours so that I don't have to be neat with them.

Although I'm not a Thousand Sons general, I've been experimenting with gold trims quite recently.
Retributor Gold is the only gold colour I actually like, otherwise I start looking a bronze and copper.
Personally, I like a base coat of Retributor Gold, followed by an edge highlight of silver (whatever one you want, as I use AP Chainmail) followed by a Citadel Gloss Shade. Agthrax will make the gold appear more weathered while Reikland makes it quite rich and rosy, where the gloss still gives it a nice sheen.
Also, one thing to note: The Retributor Armour spray is a slightly different shade from what you get in the pot, so touch-ups will be more noticeable if you need to correct a mistake.
Happy painting.

Fun times. Would a 50/50 mix Retributor Armor and Liberator Armor do the trick?

For touch-ups? I'm not familiar with Liberator Armour, but if it's lighter I think it should do the trick. Retributor Armour from the pot is noticeably darker, and my hopes it would match once dry were sadly dashed as I was faced with unevenly blotchy gold.

Is the Reikland Fleshshade GLOSS actually worth it?
Duncan uses the vanilla Fleshshade in his video and I don't want my Rubrics to be too flamboyant 80's glamrock .
Apart from that I will probably take the Retributor Base, Reikland shade, Liberator gold edge highlight and Stormhost silver extreme edge highlight - route and look how it comes out.
I think GW used some Liberator Gold at the more exposed flatter areas as an extensive layer, though.

Liberator Gold, sorry...

Purple washes also work great on gold. Start with balthasar for old gold or retributor for new.

Still wonder if the Gloss Shade is worth it. I bought it anyways (of course).
But in the tutorial Duncan uses the regular Reikland Shade, eventhough the Gloss variant was on the market for several months.

It comes down to personal preference between gloss and regular.
If we use coins as an example, both have natural shade and highlights across the engravings, but newly minted coins are shiny where older coins are dull with a matte finish.
Gloss will help give you a metallic sheen without being garish, whereas regular shade will make the trim appear more weathered.
And yes, purple is a great colour from gold/ brass. I'm hoping to try out brass with a purple shade for my Sisters of Silence.

Assembling the first model before painting was a HUGE mistake.
I just quit painting for today, b/c it was a tremendous pain in the ass to paint that rubric model up, no fun whatsoever.

With starting a Guard army now, my rule is dry-fit first, see where a brush could reasonably reach. If the brush car reach without getting anything else, or if it's not easily visible, glue. Otherwise don't.
If you need to strip, Super Clean will also weaken any super glue. If you used plastic glue, you may need to try to carefully slice at the joint with a hobby knife. Otherwise search the Forums for help (as I've never dealt with plastic glue before. Sorry...)
Additional note: a 4:1 mix of Liberator Gold and Retributor Armor matches closely with the spray of Retributor Armor, if you need to clean any mistakes.
