There is a thread in general discussion about Warhammer Fantasy Battle and if GW should bring the Old World back somehow.

This got me thinking. Should GW bring back Warhammer Historicals? Especially, Warhammer Ancient Battles? Why or why not?

Discuss....

I mean, yeah. Make it a print on demand or even a electronic only format and it's basically free money, since people are perfectly willing to play GW games, warts and all. And I can imagine some people would buy them just for the nostalgia factor, or to own more books by certain wargaming luminaries.

Will they? I don't think so. Maybe if the specialist team were to handle it, since they seem more willing to write and release rules for models that don't exist yet.

I could see a POD for nostalgia's sake, but it frankly wasn't that good of a system. It kinda deserved to have its lunch eaten by the other multi-period historical games.

Only if they did a Age of Sigmar version.

Otherwise I think it would just cost too much to justify supporting it.

Probably not core WAB (basically, Warhammer Fantasy Battles 5th edition with some tweaks), but Warmaster Ancients, Legends of the Old West / High Seas and Trafalgar? Yes, please.

Even if you're not a fan of the WAB rules, I think there was some fairly solid research behind the supplements, so it'd be nice to get that back.

Probably not, there are too many on the market now to be an effective competitor. It also isn't in GW's moniker to play well with others anymore. Not embracing the mind boggling large number of historical miniature manufacturers would be bad for them.

Hail Caesar! or Kings of War have the market for large ancient to modern battles, with things like LADLG and others picking up a good chunk. Saga has the 'skirmish' side well sewn up with Osprey grabbing a lot of the rest.

It would be nice to be able to buy Warmaster Ancients and it's associated material again though, that still seems to have people making kit for it. It would have competitors as well though.

On time, on target, or the next one's free

I loved WAB, and Clash of Empires was kinda like the next version of WAB. CoE is my favorite historical gaming system! Waaay better than hail ceasar.

No.

GW has no reason to release rules it will not support with models.

All the original authors left and are doing better things.

Go buy those rulesets instead.

On an Express Elevator to Hell!!

Was going to say, it's a nice idea but I think all of those authors (chief amongst them Rick Priestley) have moved on elsewhere.

So I don't know where the design would come from, although I have no doubt that some of the current designers are probably involved in wargaming historicals in some way, just because there is that natural progression there.

Does Wawrick Kinrade still do the FW Armour books? It's funny still to read those books and feel how much they seem like they are a real account of battle, but it's because he is real student of military history and has gone on to do the 'Battlegroup' books on WW2 warfare. So if people like him are still around then perhaps it might be a possibility at some point in the future?

Warwick is not, he has moved on. He also wrote "Soldiers of God" abotu the Crusades and I believe is working on an Ancients version.

They absolutely should. WAB is a fantastic set of rules particularly well suited for tournament play. HMGS East always had huge participation at the WAB tournaments held at Cold Wars, Historicon and Fall In!

Allot of competition these days for Historical.

However! If they allowed you to play warhammer historical in store I'd be all for it.
Get the unwashed masses into something interesting educational instead of Ass Creed.

I would love to see a 13th / 14tg century game done well with Mide being invaded by the Vikings, and king egburt and Ragnar sons.

Or even some of the Scottish vs English wars.. half naked kilt wearing shirtless clansman running out of the woods with rocks as weapons.

Sounds like a great skirmish game.
