Answering another poster's question in another thread, I realized that no one had created a thread for Rick Priestly's newest ruleset for Lucid Eye Publication's line of miniatures:

The Red Book of the Elf King

The Elf King suffered a sickness of the soul. A twilight of melancholy fell upon this King and he passed into the Outworlds, never to be seen again… The power of his circle was diminished by his passing, leaving his offspring in a perilous state.

War came to these islands in the form of the Fae Revanche. A reign of terror swept the land, decimating the already dwindling Fae of Ȇas. The war is one borne from panic without reason, is self defeating and will eventually lead to the devastation of all.

Welcome to the Fae Revanche, welcome to the Fall of All.

The Red Book of the Elf King game rules allow us to fight battles between powerful Elven Thanes, Lords of the Circles of the Fae Kingdoms of Eas, fell warriors and creatures of sorcerous might.

Each player controls a warband, known as a circle. A circle consists of a Thane of the Fae Kingdoms and the Thane’s warband of valiant elven companions. The game is played between two opposing circles but can potentially be played between multiple circles as well.

The game is played in turns and both sides participate in each turn. Games last for seven turns or until one side achieves the objective of the scenario played or else until one of the opposing Thanes is slain.

A standard game size is a Thane and six groups of three companions - 19 minis total. Elven Companions have access to Rhud Magic, while Thanes can use more power Glamours.

At the moment, there are the six "circles" (factions) for the elves, as well as Thanes and Companions for Trolls (related to elves, but evil) and Mortals.

There are apparently other races planned for future releases.

Beasts of War has a pretty good explanation of the rules.

Sounds interesting, but the models don't look particularly elfy in any real way. Also, I'm a HUGE fan of elves, especially the traditional tolkien kind, but not many of my friends are. Might be difficult to get people into a game that is essentially Game of Thrones: Elf Mode. Somehting to keep my eye on, especially if there's more races coming and more types of elves, as it sounds like each House/Circle will be fairly different

Yeah, I realized I made a mistake in the original posts. These elves aren't Tolkien elves - rather they're more like the Norse idea of elves. They're basically all demigods, immortal and capable of using magic, and the Thanes are a step above them. The only reason why Mortals are allowed in their Circles is because they can wield iron, which is poisonous to Fae creatures like elves and trolls.

Elves with horned helms!

Thanks for the video post. That's a good looking rulebook.

My local game store owner let me know his order from Lucid Eye shipped and will be arriving around the 22nd, so I'm looking forward to getting my hands on the intro deal. Apparently Lucid Eye threw in a couple free Circles for the store to use for demos.

I suppose I should update this since the new book is out.

Troll Wars is the first expansion to the Red Book of the Elf King series, and allows players to bring six more Circles to the table - 2 Troll warbands, 2 Mortal Warbands, a new Elf warband, and the spirits of the dead fae lost in the war against the Old Gods - the Vorthexen:

Ragvhan Earsplitter, Troll Lord of the Whitefells
Sunnvane and Lismhale, Elven Thane of the Tower of Glas
Brux of the Out Isle, Chieftain of the Urdane
Wyt Ironcraw, Chieftan of the Nordane
Hirihalye Bloodmother of Smotenshal
Cufnir the Betrayer, Lord of the Longfens

The book also introduces Witches and their Pel Hexes for the Mortals, and Troll Secrets for the Trolls, to match the Glamours that Elven Thanes can cast. There's also 7 new scenarios that can be played in a campaign to control the Isle of Ymsarent.

New models for the next book have also already been released

As mentioned before, these are Norse Elves, the "Light Elves" as opposed to the "Dark Elves" who were what we in a Post-Tolkien/LotR would call dwarfs (bearded, live underground forge magic weapons of incredible power). Red Book of the Elf King is enticing to me because I read Poul Anderson's The Broken Sword in my early teens which introduced me to the concept of Norse Elves who are decidedly NOT Tolkien's elves. The Broken Sword is worth a read for inspiration for games of "Red Book" if you can find or borrow a copy. The link below goes to Amazon U.S. and the picture is of the edition I bought long ago. That is a revised edition as Mr. Anderson had written the original novel much earlier in his career, and as a more polished author was somewhat embarassed by some of what his younger self had written. He said he left much of that in but corrected the mistakes in regards to close combat since the older Anderson was better versed in the subject.

I've been picking up Lucid Eye releases whenever I can.

They aren't easy to acquire in the states, but at least shipping and ordering directly from them is pretty reasonable.

There other ranges are just as varied and interesting as their take on Elves I'd say.

Just finished up one of the mortal thanes from the first set while I'm starting the Red Elf King!

Poorly lit photos of my ever- growing collection of completely unrelated models!
