Just a retrospective of the tournaments I've been getting into, if you get the NASCAR joke you're probably old like me, but outside of the Krayt Cup I've been playing in a few small though competitive tournaments and one that 30+ and my record has been surprisingly good, as last count it's been 2nd in an original trilogy only tourney, 3rd at the 30+ tourney at PBKW in Cornelius NC, and after last night getting 2nd again. So flirting with the top spot is starting to feel like my lot in this game. Last night if I hadn't goofed and parked Jostero in front of a Lothal Rebel's front arc, butt first, and hadn't whiffed on a 4 die primary from Nym, could of still won...but alas, flew it poorly deserved the L. And it's always the 2nd round game or the 2nd to last round game I bork up.

Ahhhhh so....

Anyways to make this a topic, how do ya'll do in competitive scenes and recover from goofs in the middle of a game?

The best way to recover from a mistake is to accept the mistake and move on. Don't let it get to you mentally, just do the best you can with what you have left on the table. You might not win no matter how well you play after the mistake, but the worst thing you can do is let it cause you to make more mistakes and turn a winnable game into a 100-0 loss. Also, accept that you may be in the weaker position and have to play more aggressive with your risk vs. reward choices to get back into it. That doesn't mean playing stupidly because it doesn't matter, but just like with any unfavorable game state you may be in a situation where both players making the safe/obvious choices leads to a loss for you and you have to choose the right moment to take a calculated risk that could potentially swing the game.

Also, if you have to lose a game, it's best to lose in the first round. Then you can farm some easy wins in the losers' bracket before having to face the better players again. If you lose late in the tournament you only get dropped down into the .500 or better part of the pairings, giving you matches that aren't as easy to farm 100-0s with.

There is no such thing as a hobby without politics. "Leave politics at the door" is itself a political statement, an endorsement of the status quo and an attempt to silence dissenting voices.

Most finish with a positive win/loss but the Ghost usually gives away 40ish points so podium finishes are unusual, only got 0-X'd once but I'm putting that down to my FLGS fancy new location that lets sunlight in (distinct unfair on us trollkin imo)

Usually try to focus on fixing any goofs rather than dwelling on them

Well my loss came against a Ghost/Norra list. Finally saw why people put PTL on her. I've been nervous as heck to use her without VI. And I like how my opponent used the ships.

Bathing in elitist French expats fumes

I usually enter tournaments with the hope of making the top 16, and nothing more. Last Regional and the Alpha Condor Challenge this weekend I placed 7th. Even though I had only a 4-2 record, because my MoV was excellent. (My losses were on points and I'd usually only lose Rex or Fenn when I win, Fenn and Rex when I lose)

I second what Peregrine is saying. Mistakes are in the past, you cannot unmake them (no matter how much an opponent begs you to let them do*)

You also have to make peace with the fact that you are taking risks. Expect to lose your bet, but be extremely gracious when you pull it off. A long sigh is acceptable.

*True story, it happened twice last weekend. One of my opponents actually asked me to re-roll all of his evade rolls because he forgot to use his Boba Fett pilot ability... last turn!
