Depends on the goal. Virus bombing a planet certainly changes its biosphere. But as for making it hospitable specifically for humans I'm unsure. An example would be Armageddon, a highly poisonous planet, which remains highly poisonous despite the thousands of years of habitation. They can build hive cities with self contained breathable air but outide the cities the humans need ppe.

They might not have terraformed Armageddon because they don't need or want to.
The Imperium definitely has terraforming and while it doesn't work everywhere they probably use it when they need to. They just have a very different idea of quality of life.

The problem there lies in the fact that if we think of 'Nidz as biosphere-slurping scifi-monsters that they are, they've most likely taken away almost all requirements of life from the planet. Most of the carbon, phosphates and other things in the outer crust of the planet are gone. To meaningfully terraform from there, you'd have to bring your stuff with you and even for a moderately sized world that is a huge effort. Of course the Imperium being what it is that gets done if some big hat really decrees it to get done ("we shall rebuild Cadia, if it means we hace to put it in a bag and glue it together somewhere else..." "But sir!"), but it is a bit silly. The other option would of course be to look out for objects like asteroids that contain what you need and collide them into the planet in huge quantities, effectively bombarding the world until it once again resembles a molten ball of flame like our Earth did in its infancy 4 billion years ago. Waiting for that to cool and solidify for useful purposes is another thing, then.
That would also bridge nicely to one of my favourite quotes about why rocks are not free: http://wh40k.lexicanum.com/wiki/Rocks_Are_Not_Free!
If the Imperium doesn't bother to do that for war, how could they get off their arses to do it for long term benefits of their people

terraforming takes time, Cnrturies if not longer, given when 'nids arrived on the scene, terraforming a planet they've eaten could be done but even the ones from the 1st war wou;ldn't have ahd eneugh time to "cook" yet I suspect

Even the Eldar at the height of their power don't appear to have had the ability to rapidly (as we'd see it) terraform a planet. We know that they had the ability to terraform. But we also know that those terraformed worlds were left unsettled while the terraforming process took place, and then had human settlers end up colonizing the planet much later (since the Eldar had fallen in the meantime, and were no longer settling new planets).

Re researching the lore, there is actually nothing saying that the planet was destroyed, just the chapter they are replacing (the Templar were on site as well)

The Eldar terraforming took so long because all they did was dump bacteria on planets. They had eternity to do everything so why do it faster but harder? For all we know they could do it within months but have a lower quality world or something.

Are we talking a fully stripped world?
So no atmosphere, soil etc. I dont think they could terraform it, colonise sure, but restore it... not a chance.

Honestly: I'm not sure...the lore says that the chapter was destroyed on their home world by tyranids, but the Templars were there and survived

even if it can't be restroed they could keep their fortress monastary there and just recruit from other worlds. they'd not be the first chapter to do something like that

You would need to wait until the core had spat out enough minerals and stuff to.replace the stuff that the tyranids had taken, or drop an awful lot of comets onto it. I wonder if You could.kick off the process by hitting the planet with an exterminatus grade weapon on a "light fry" setting to kick off the volcanism you would need.

Throne. Guillman told Dante to terraform Baal, to be nice to the people.
So I guess they do. Prolly take a week or less in this nu40k too.

Not even ligjr exoermitus
A orbital bombardment in right fault lines can cause massive volcanic activity rise..
It happened in fluff, a large ernough force in the right spot can cause the volcanism to make a planet unihabtbale etx.

FudgeDumper - It could be that you are just so uncomfortable with the idea of your chapters primarch having his way with a docile tyranid spore cyst, that you must deny they have any feelings at all. |

They absolutely can terraform. The one adeptus mechanicus book series mentions the existence of a variety of terraforming machines (the really large - and thus good - ones were relics, but newer, post heresy ones exist). However, as to your original question. Tyranids strip the planet and, depending on which version of the lore you trust, they take the atmosphere and most of the usable ore, etc. What would be left is nothing more than a skeleton of a planet, meaning there would be no raw materials to fuel the terraforming process or maintain it. If they only stripped the biomaterial, then, sure...they absolutely could terraform it. They'd have to have a damn good reason though - the imperium doesn't lack planets and spending that level of resources on terraforming an already depleted planet wouldn't make too much sense. On the other hand, it is the imperium...a clerical error could create a snowball effect that ultimately leads to a terraforming project.

They can, but the problem with Tyranids is that they don't just eat living things, but also inanimate things. Tyranids consume a planets atmosphere, soil and minerals as well, leaving it essentially just a barren rock, like our moon or an asteroid. They strip a planet of pretty much everything even remotely usable.
You can't terraform something like that, the terraforming process would have nothing to work with.

But did the Tyranids win and consume everything, or did they almost win, but get beaten at the last moment and not consume everything? (Like on Macragge for example, a pretty close call, the world was pretty badly mauled, but not stripped.)

I do like the idea of the Imperium steering a couple of comets into a planet to patch it up after a Tyranid decimation. It has just the right amount of ludicrous overkill and crude but effective to it. Probably only done if the planet was important for some reason though...

A couple of thousand would likely be needed.but it could be done. If you read the Kim Stanley Robinson Mars series it gives a great description of the process, if you can stand the heavy handed politics.

If by Terraform you mean turn a world into a hive planet with any unpopulated areas being toxic wastelands, then yes. They can Terraform.
Praise holy Terra!
