I'm new to 40k fluff, and there's a limit to how much I can read in a day before I start painting. So, please contribute hairbrained, deepstate, and i-am-alpharius ideas as I pass the hat. If alpha legion is comprised of independently operating cells, this army would be a single cell. The basic concept is 'the traitor legion most likely to be loyalists pretend to be the loyalist legion most likely to be traitors', that is, alpha legion cell pretends to be dark angels. I'm looking to improve the hooks that tie me to existing fluff or cool conspiracy theories.

Some inital ideas:

This cell is looking for a third option to the Cabal's foretelling that Horus' win/loss means chaos' win/loss, and both lead to humanity dying out eventually.
- The 'science' they need access to is heresy, so it's easier to be traitors than hide the science.
- emulate tyrannid 'shadow in the warp' (everyone gets a pet tyrannid, increasing human psychic potential till humans create their own SitW, creating an artificial tyrannid synapse brain, etc)
- engineer psychic shields for planets that absorbs the emotions that would escape and feed chaos gods.
- is there a lower limit on the number of humans such that they don't feed chaos (population control)
- emphasis some buddist-like religion to control emotional excesses?
- did the Cabal lie to humans or set up a false dichotomy? How would one verify farseeing?
- how many psykers have to die (fail to reproduce) till humanity self-selects away from those genes?

The cells are independent
- probably, at times, working at cross purposes with another cell
- layers of double,triple,quadra-crossing orders ~10k years old, well, you've heard of the game of telephone?

Crazy, legion-wide theories:
- OG alpha legion primarch died when the primarchs got yoinked by Chaos, A and O are just space marines in secret cahoots with the emperor. (This means all three origin stories for A are 'true')
- Omegon might have founded the Grey Knights to be firefighters while Alpharius does heresy-science? ('Just keep it running till I get back')
- each primarch emphasized a portion of the Emperor, Alpharius, his gesalt, druidic nature, capable of moving his consciousness between members. Everyone saying "I am Alpharius" might be literally true.
- A and O planned to split the legion prior to HH, they flipped a coin for who would play the loyalist (playing both sides to achieve a set of goals)
- (not my favorite) Big Blue is Alpharius in disguise, leaning on the passage of time to obfuscate.

This cell pretends to be dark angels:
- blameshifting heresy is the name of the game here. put on the alpha mask when you're evil, the DA mask when you're not.
- shoulderpads with 3D hydra motif, but painted with dark angels iconography.
- DA are VERY INSISTENT that they're loyalists, in a 'my lady doth protest too much' kind of way. This cell draws on that collective reputation (unspecified whether they know the DA's secret stuff)
- Greens and whites are such pretty colors. And I like flowing robes on the elites. So cool.
- How would people interpret DA without many bikes & terminators?
