Anyone taking bets this is land-nav related?

I remember as a wee lad driving by that stretch a freeway where he was stopped a couple days after, the huge chunk of median wall still missing from where he plowed into it and got stuck.

Why would you want to steal such an ugly looking vehicle? If you are going to steal a US armoured vehicle, at least steal a nice looking one like a Bradley or Stryker. Or what about a LAV? Does the US military use those? They are pretty vehicles.

I think the Stryker is an export model of the LAV.

Yup. The Stryker is based on the LAV and is the version of that vehicle used by the US.

Have you seen some of the roads in Russia? It might not be as much overkill as you think, especially during the winter.

A few years back, I was staying for a summer with family in Petrozavodsk. Like most cities, it has a river flowing through it. It is a very small river, but it flows quickly. Every day when getting to school, I had to cross a large stone bridge on one of the main roads in the middle of the town center. One day, while I was a at school, there was a massive rainstorm. When after the storm I walked home again, the river had like tripled in size and was flowing even faster than normal. When I got to the bridge... The bridge was gone. Just gone. The middle of the bridge had collapsed entirely and fallen into the river. I know that Karelia is one of the poorer regions of Russia, but being used to Ukraine-levels of poverty and bad maintenance I had never suspected that the bridges in Russia were in such bad state. By the next day, the authorities had repaired the damage. By filling up the gap with sand and a pipe for the water to flow through. The road was just rebuilt on top of that... Apparently this is something that often happened in Karelia. I wonder how long those repairs lasted.
But yeah, road conditions are hugely variable across Russia, and while in some places they are great (Moscow), in some places they are totally horrible. And actually, they are worse during spring or fall than during winter.

I'd guess that if this guy was any real threat a cop would have blasted the driving compartment with some .308 and that would have torn through that thing's armour. Unless this is an improved version of the ones they were using way back in Vietnam (which an AK's round could go right through)?

Even then they tended to up armor them against that. Much to the bitching of the army that you arn't supposed to use them that way.
That said, this was the command vehicle variant, so I'd be surprised if it even kept out shrapnel, let alone bullets. Not one of those Aussie variants that really IS a tank.

NG Armories do not store ammo at the facility. Even active duty military do not store ammo near the motor pool where the vehicles are parked (Easier for SMAJ to ensure PMCS is done every Monday morning)
Ammo is issued at the range that another unit is tasked to bring (and who are running the range) and allotted from there.
All ammo are kept at an AHA (Ammunition Storage Area) which is on a military base away from the main built up area

Not sure where you're going with this, but ok. Or were you responding to the idea of someone driving off with a full rack, (which was clearly in jest) just at random? I think when I brought it up I did make it clear that some planning and prep would have to go into something like that, not just a 'spur of the moment' 'drug fueled rampage'.

The Marines use the regular LAV-25. The Stryker is the Army specific model.

These things aren't armored against small arms? What is their purpose of being this ugly then? To protect from hailstorms?
