My son and I, for our next game have decided we’re going to pull our templates back out and use them.

This is what we’re thinking:

Flamers: teardrop template, hits everything under template automatically
Small template (3”?): used for D3 weapons. Template must cover at least 1/2” of a single model’s base when placing. Make an attack roll for each model under the template
Large blast (5”?): used for D6 or 2D3 weapons. Template must cover at least 1/2” of a single model’s base when placing. Make an attack roll for each model under the template
Huge blast (7”?): used for 2D6 weapons. As above for placement and rolls to hit.

I believe our game will be CSM vs. Adeptus Custodes + Knights. Is there anything above I need to consider changing or weapons with templates I might have missed? I’m willing to make templates from transparency paper if I need to make custom templates (like a Torrent-esque flamer template if a heldrake shows up to the fight).

Will you bring out the scatter die as well?

My friends and I have been toying with this idea ourselves.

The scatter die is a must if you're going to take back the templates. In addition to the scatter die, I'd subtract the distance of the scatter by my inverted ballistic skill, like we used to do. 3+ BS would provide -4" to the scatter distance.

Personally, I'd rather just have every model that is partially covered hit on a 4+ and all that are wholly covered hit automatically. That way you prevent arguments over what is 50% of the models base and what isn't, but you're playing against your son, so it might be a less important change.

Personally, I'd consider 2d3 2 small blasts (not a large blast). Likewise with 2d6 being 2 large blasts instead of a huge one, but I've never used the huge blast so idk.

There are some issues with simply using templates for d3 and d6 shots nowadays, so I'd say use your better judgement. For example, I believe the Predator Autocannon has 2d3 shots, but I'd never use it as a template weapon. The Missile Launcher deals d6 damage with the frag missile, however this used to use the small blast, did it not?

Your rules are a lot clearer, though.

Nope, no scatter die.

So will all of the blasts hit automatically any models wholly underneath? That sounds awfully scary. Or will you be rolling to hit using the number of models under the template as the number of shots?

"Make an attack roll for each model" is what the OP says. Which makes it a lot less OP.

I would change it to either wholly covering or any point of the base. Half the base might lead to too many arguments.

It still brings back "I see 4" vs "I see 3" arguments, but those tended to not be so bad. I enjoyed scatter, but it was so touchy and so frequently led to disagreements, I see why it won't/maybe shouldn't come back.

Yeah, flamer templates would be the only one you wouldn’t roll to hit for.

The 1/2” statement in the original post was for placement - the idea being that you have to place the template so it significantly overlaps at least one target, but the idea is that if it at least grazes any other models (My son and I rule more than the angled part/lip is covered), you get to roll for the hit. Just didn’t want to get that technical in the description above.

BTW, this is pretty similar to how Bolt Action 2 handles “blasts”, so I’m pretty confident it will work for 40K. And as Karneth pointed out, some weapons like the Predator auto cannon might not use blasts - in those cases we’re planning to make it a static number of shots (debating between average and max), and just roll a fixed to-hit.

I’d suggest simply placing the large blast (5”) template twice for 2D6 weapons, in most cases (like rapid-fire battle cannons) they were a blast weapon that shot twice. Almost nothing short of a bane blade used the 7” or larger templates in normal play.

Hope is the first step on the road to disappointment.

This may seem a bit silly, but if you love templates, why not just use them? Very few units exist now which are solely new to 8th. So you use the templates assigned via 7th (though some weapons will scale better or worse).

It's be dead easy to compare classic weapons with new weapons and simply use your templates, go scatter-dice, the whole nine-yards. Nothing is stopping you from doing that.
