What is the general opinion of renegade knights as allies for DG. They are expensive but do bring some great firepower

Hard pass. Just use Mortarian for a lord of war. Renegade knights are not in a good spot atm.

Generally yeah. Morty is better with he army. DG firepower is decent, and Morty is a CC god.

I wouldn't mind converting one just for yucks, but i doibt it'd see the table that often.

The Viletide: Daemons of Nurgle/Deathguard: 7400 pts
Disclples of the Dragon - Ad Mech - about 2000 pts
GSC - about 2000 Pts
Rhulic Mercs - um...many...
Circle Oroboros - 300 Pts or so
Menoth - 300+ pts

Are they really that bad and if so why. They are points heavy but do bring a lot of power to the table

No stratagems, no relics, no army synergy, minimal options, and index points / rules.

They also lack Legion, Heretic Astartes or literally any keywords to interact at all with any chaos model.

I think until we see at least a reduction in points for Renegade Knights, they're best used for casual games. But boy are they fun to build and convert. I just slapped some Rhino spikes and chains to an Errant and it looks really Chaos-y.

If you do decide to field one I think your best bet would be to focus on what Death Guard lack - long-range anti-tank. Grab a Thermal Cannon (or two!) and the Stormspear Missiles and you've got a punchy, over-costed firebase.

(Behemoth - 2,000 Points Painted)

(Alpha Legion - 2,000 Points Painted)
- Favourite Opponent - Local RTT Dec. 2018

(Vior'la Sept - 1,000 Points Painted)
- Medusa V Veterans, Konor Veterans

(Steel Legion - 1,000 Points Painted)

point reduction is not enough, they lack any sinergy they lack all criticak keywords, so no stratagems no psy power no buff nothing, barely playable for almost 500 points.
