I was planning on purchasing some electro priests to be my Ad Mech melee unit, but then the rules for the Secutarii just came out and I'm reconsidering my purchase. Between the Hoplites and the Fulgurites which is potentially the better melee unit? Or do they both have different roles that I should consider? I'd be grateful for your guy's thoughts. For reference I am running a Stygies VIII army with an emphasis on vanguard spam and an onager castle, with other units for flexibility and flavor.

Please get the hoplites. They just look so good. They are also better

I bought the hoplites upgrade at the end of 7th and never got a chance to build and use them.

Now they have rules so I'm pretty excited to use them.

Their melee is S6 which is really nice, plus being only 9ppm is pretty bonkers. I really think that if you're taking a melee unit hoplites are a solid choice. Plus they can shoot.

They serve very different roles. The Electro-Priests (if I'm thinking of the right one) get an invul save after they defeat something in close combat, which becomes very valuable and makes them really hard to take down unless the opponent focuses them down with their entire army for 2 turns.

The hoplites are made to be all-round good. Shooting that the electro-priests don't have, invul saves right off the bat, and really potent close combat as well make the Hoplites a very, very solid choice. That str 6 is nothing to scoff at. That's wounding on 3's against Plague Marines, which is something that a lot of armies have to do on 4's or 5's.

That depends do you face death guard a lot. I find s6 to be not that usefull which is why my multilasers gets replaced with heavy bolter where i can. 75 ap-1 better than s6 ap0. S6 comes to play too rarely in 8th
