So, about 20 years ago I started playing 3rd edition 40k with a group of guys back at Game Empire in San Diego. As more players got into the game we started a Wednesday night 40k league which continued to grow and at one time had more than 30 people packed into a small game store with only 6 tables. (The Wed. night league still exists today) Back then, 40k was relatively easy and cheap to get into. We had the league, pick-up games, summer campaigns (Armageddon and Eye of Terror), and GW sanctioned Rogue Trader Tournaments. The game was by no means perfect, but it was a heck of a lot of fun and every game store you went into had people playing it.

Well fast-forward to 2018 and I still have that same group of friends from 1998. On occasion we get together and swap stories of games and tournaments past... Well, apparently the nostalgia has taken hold and a couple of us have decided to dust off the old rules (and some old models) and go back to playing 3rd edition 40k again. I went on eBay and no problems finding a rulebook and codex books all for less than $10 each. I still have plenty of templates from editions over the years.

Anyway, I'm super pumped to dust off some old models and play some 3e again.

I wish you the best of luck, but you'll find that 3e has aged like unsealed wine, imho.

3.5e with the retooled melee rules was an improvement, but I feel that 4th and 5th was the high point. I can't really decide which one I liked better of those two.

Don't forget to never ever pre-measure, and don't forget you can decide to "change your mind" before finalising your 12" Rhino move.

Yeah, we're going to essentially be playing 3.5 with the Chapter Approved books. (Can't disembark from a rhino if it moves more than 12", fire points on the vehicles, 5+ invul for terminators)

I don't want to start another thread of which edition is better. We've had way too many of those already. We're going to play 3rd (essentially 3.5) because it's what we played the most of back when we had a lot more time to play. The materials are easy to come by from eBay or used book stores, and you don't need a ton of models to field an army.

It's like driving a classic car and comparing that to a new car today... I know there are new features and gadgets in the newer one, but the old one is still a lot of fun to drive.

Any edition of this game is fun if you play with like-minded people, who are genuinely well balanced & don't attach ego to the outcome.

We still occasionally bat around 2nd edition, though we took out 2nd edition mod and applied it to 8th and I play that more than anything else right now.

You will, inevitably, discover all the same feelings. The same things you hated...you'll hate, and the same things you liked, you'll like.

^ This 100%... Any edition of the game you play can be fun if you're in it with like minded people.... These days I think more about playing 40k for entertainment more than anything else. I'm not looking to get back into a tournament scene, and I'm not looking to buy more models. (I have enough stuff to paint up as it is.) I'm simply looking to use what I have, get a friend or two together with the same frame of mind and roll some dice.

In all fairness, I've been buying, building and playing 40k for over 20 years... Looking at my shelf of starter sets from 2nd through 8th, I feel as if I'm done with buying more 40k stuff, and instead I would much rather focusing on building, playing, and painting what I have.

3rd edition is fun, I also went back for a few games of this edition a while back. We used the lists in the BRB, and the 3.5 rules changes.

It felt familiar, and I have to say I really enjoyed the games. One thing that really stood out was how the rules for Rapid Fire weapons worked back then. Movement drastically cut down their range.

The objective of the game is to win. The point of the game is to have fun. The two should never be confused.

The correct pronunciation is Imperial Guard and Stormtroopers, "Astra Militarum" and "Tempestus Scions" are something you'll find at Hogwarts.

I just finished saying in another thread here on the forums that as 40k players, we should never feel as if we must play the latest edition.

If GW has shown us anything in the last 30 years, it's that the game will change. Some may like it and some don't, but there's enough edition saturation out there now that you can either pick what edition you want to play or pick which rules from over the years that you want to play with.

3.5th was so much fun to play. Lots of great memories of those days. You're lucky to have people to play like that. The majority of players in the GW community would likely skin you alive
