I would like to play Stormcast as my main army (been tossing around ideas in my head and finally settled on them). But, without the characters from Soul Wars, the Stormcast seem to be way, way, way behind on Magic/Summoning. Right now, I simply can't afford Soul Wars. Hopefully it won't be too long, but I would say at least three to four months until I have a chance to afford it another another couple of months at least to paint them.

I have all of the following, so please let me know if you think any of these other armies would be more worth putting my time into painting when it comes to AoS (approximate, current point values are to the side of the army name):

Stormcast Eternals (2000)
Seraphon (2000)
Kharadron Overlords (1000)
Sylvaneth (mainly Behemoths - 1000)
Fyreslayers (1000)
Tzeentch (2000)
Nurgle (1000)
Skaven (1000)
Legions of Nagash (1000)
Ironjawz (1000)
Beastclaw Raiders (2000)

Thanks

If as your signature states you only play for fun and not competitively then you should be fine with your stormcast as is. They are still well rounded and very strong regardless.

Thanks! Yes, I am just a casual player. I would like to go to a couple of tournaments eventually just to have the experience. It'd be nice to win a game or two, but I'm definitely not trying to make it into the top 8, top 4, or the finals.

Prayers are still a fantastic element to have. I can't imagine Relictors not having their place in the army even after the Sacrosanct chamber. Liberators are a bit more generic and there's some mild envy when looking at their shiny younger brothers - Sequitors, however, they still feel solid. Maybe Liberators will have a nicer spot with a war scroll battalion.

With the diverse heroes, prayers, and units, the army feels in a good spot, even if the player decides not to use the new profiles. Not sure how well is this prediction going to hold in the competitive waters, but that's how I feel on the matter.

It all depends on what Tournament. Put it this way as I found out, when going to a tournament people do not play for fun, but to win. So unless you either buy the "best" units to try and win, go into a tournament to have fun but to expect to loose. While I never played Age of Sigmar much the last time I went to a 40K tournament in 5th edition my first one, I expect to loose every game and had fun, the second wasn't fun because I found it sad people changed their army so they could just win. As the person said "there is money to be won", so lots of people have a different mentality than you and me.

Just don't get discouraged about the tourney scene when people bring in the best and you play causally. Nothing wrong with that, just don't expect to win. Not knowing exactly what minis you have people will not be able to say what is best to play. Some armies will need to SUMMON. So if you don't have those minis, then you will need to buy more. Might as well have that money go to Soul Wars. You might have the "wrong" units so again more buying. Again, more money to go towards Soul Wars.

Yes I know it sucks spending so much time in an army to paint up to find it lack luster on the battlefield so I can't say what army to paint since I don't know if you need to win or not. For me if I loose every game, I am fine with that. It sucks but does gets discouraging and is why I quit playing in 6th and never started 7th edition 40K.

Since you will get Soul Wars eventually I say paint up the Stormcasts so you will even have a BIGGER army of them when you do get Soul Wars. I know you said you like to win once in a while. Are you OK if you don't? That is the question. Be ok to loose every game. (Not saying that will be the case but could happen with any army you play with, with what you have and not buy anything to help it) and then have a BIGGER army with MORE options in 4 months time?

Agies Grimm:The "Learn to play, bro" mentality is mostly just a way for someone to try to shame you by implying that their metaphorical nerd-wiener is bigger than yours. Which, ironically, I think nerds do even more vehemently than jocks.

Everything is made up and the points don't matter. 40K or Who's Line is it Anyway?

Stormcast are really good... you should be fine. They're only getting better with those kickass wizards they're getting.

My question is similar so I just hijack this topic...

I want to give 2.0 a try and have here 2 times the Stormcast from old starter box (only 1 Dracoth) from a different hobby project.
I won't get the new starter (for now, as those robes don't work with my planned color scheme) but can get a third one from the old one if needed.

Converting is not a problem, like replacing the hammers with blades, axes, or glaives etc, or turning normal models into heroes.

the question is just, what new models/heroes from the new stuff are necessary, what heroes to I really need (eg is a 2nd Lord Celestant on Dracoth worth it) and do I have a chance in tournaments/events?

No one knows and no one will know for at least 2 months after release and anyone who says otherwise is just making guesses.

What is powerful in the game is influenced as much by what everyone ELSE is bringing as much as anything. Until you have a clearer idea of who the winners/losers post GHB/2nd are and what things GW missed in their playtesting, we won't really know which units are actually the most powerful.

The box set is not the strongest stormcast force. If you are looking to do well in tournaments then I'd probably definitely recommend some of the newer models and rules.
