Really liked Strontium Dog,

but based on their recent Dr Who stuff I worry that it's not going to look much better than the Mongoose stuff they bought and dropped

As a Skirmish game? That could work. It'd be easy enough to throw in whatever sci fi miniatures people have besides the official models. Terrain could be anything too (seeing as everything either looks like present day, a Wild West town, or some sci-fi megacity).

Though personally I wouldn't mind a war game set on Nu Earth (or the wider conflict). 2000AD's revival of that setting with the Jaegar comic branched out the series a bit and gave it a bit more grounding (showing less wackier vehicles and uniforms in service, to the point that yeah, you could probably just buy some modern German APCs, add some bits and use those). Though I suppose they've been doing that with a few series. It'd be a wing and a prayer to ever see anything from the new Dead World comic (maybe we'll see a Judge Fairfax on his bike as a charity model by Frothers, though have they made anything lately?).

Strontium Dog is my favourite strip from the golden era of 2000 AD, so I’m naturally interested in this.... but seriously - is there a player base for this at all? Judge Dredd is a far more recognisable brand, and its game had an absolutely fantastic set of rules (granted the minis were beyond awful), and absolutely nobody played it anywhere ever. What chance does SD have? It’s a pretty obscure license, it’s doesn’t really lend itself to a Miniatures game, and its heyday was 30 years ago.

I hate nostalgia ... always auto-depleting my wallet.
This will be a must for me.

I think Johhny & Gronk look good. Less sold on Wulf, but he's often absent in the comics. I'd probably prefer Middenface anyway.
I wonder if they'll do vehicles beyond hover bikes? SD had some pretty cool designs IMHO.

The Gronk looks excellent, Johnny is a ok miss and so is Wulf which is a real shame

and from facebook another (later) fan favourite

(again the sculpt isn't great)

but i'll wait with anticipation for Middenface, Torso and Evans the Fist

I see they went for the "classic" Durham Red before they redesigned her outfit to be a bit more practical. I guess as they're going for the nostalgic crowd or something.

Love Strontium Dog.

Not sold on the minis. Would have been okay 20 years or so ago.

For stuff like this Warlord really needs to outsource the miniatures to a better painter, unless they are going for a basic comic book style. Even so they don't do the models any favours as they look like they fell out of the late 90's.

TBH I see this falling into the usual Warlord "supported for a year then discounted" trap.

I wonder if the models will be like their Doctor Who range, bigger and not in scale with any other range out there.

That appears to be a standard Warlord 25mm base which they use for their Bolt Action figures that Durham Red is standing on. Unless she's meant to be pretty tall she appears to be standing a bit taller than their 28mm stuff. Though the Johnny Alpha figure looks to be on the same base, and he's maybe a smidge taller than their 28mm lines. It may be down to the sculptor then, rather than them intentionally going for 30mm stuff.

I really want to see the Warlord Minis next to other ranges - might work nicely with my MGP Dreed minis

These "late 90's" comments are blowing my mind, as someone who bought a ton of models in the late 90's and most of them were utter <REMOVED> compared to these. These basically look like Carlos Ezquerra drawings in 3D aka works of art.

edit; also glad that Warlord went with modern 1/48 scaling on these models instead of squashing proportions just to be able to label the minis as "28mm"

Not familiar with this setting, but what is up with Mr. Long Legs?

The more I look at that mini the more I want it in my collection despite how ridiculous it looks.

They didn't buy it. Licensed from Mongoose to do production, distribution etc.

Just for comparison - http://www.solegends.com/citcat1998us/index.htm

The dated look is something I'm hearing a lot, and with it being a license I suspect price wise it'll be competing with the likes of Hasslefree at the lower end, and Infinity at the other (broad strokes, but you get the point).

As for the painting for Warlords stuff, its nothing to do with the paint job. Up close there very impressive. I think some of its the photography, and some of its poor choice in color schemes - you can't blame the painter for the studios choice.

These "late 90's" comments are blowing my mind, as someone who bought a ton of models in the late 90's and most of them were utter <REMOVED> compared to these. These basically look like Carlos Ezquerra drawings in 3D aka works of art.

I was curious about this so turned to Wikipedia...

"In 1978 he and Wagner created "Strontium Dog", a sci-fi western about a bounty hunter in a future where mutants are an oppressed minority forced into doing such dirty work, for Starlord,[5] a short-lived sister title to 2000 AD with higher production values.[4]:pp.39–41 Starlord was later merged into 2000 AD, bringing "Strontium Dog" with it.[5] Ezquerra was almost the only artist to draw the character, until 1988, when writer Alan Grant decided to kill him off in a storyline called "The Final Solution". Ezquerra disagreed with the decision, and refused to draw the story, which was instead illustrated by Simon Harrison and Colin MacNeil.[6] In 2000 Wagner and Ezquerra revived "Strontium Dog" based on a treatment Wagner had written for an abortive TV pilot"

So what your saying is they look like 90's drawings? I'd agree, but there dated designs.

I can't see anyone picking it up at retail, especially given what happened with Mongoose and that everyone seemed to be shedding there Doctor Who stock at Salute. Also, and this is the most baffling thing about this - Warlord are previewing it this weekend... when Soul Wars is being released. Why... why would you do this?
