Hello, everyone!

I’ve recently been taking a break from my other project The Dark Elf Slaanesh Horde, The Cult of The Rising Sun: https://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/751863.page

This will be the first post on my short journey through a project that is working towards an intense Warhammer Fantasy Siege Battle with my Gaming Group!

One of my favorite characters in Warhammer was the man, the myth and the Legend... The Mad Count Of Averland, Marius Leitdorf!

Not many can say they waged wars against swarms of bees, the forest itself and imaginary fish people! While utterly insane, Count Leitdorf is renowned for his exceptional swordsmanship and tactical brilliance upon the field of battle (though, most of his advice may come from his most trusted advisor... his warhorse, Daisy Kurt von Helborg II!). Indeed Leitdorf is known far and wide for his psychotic nature, up until his demise at the apocalyptic battle of Black Fire Pass, fighting by the side of Emperor Karl Franz in the year 2520...

I’ve always loved the character and loved Averland; it’s uniform and symbology. I always thought the Averland icon had a very “Astrological” feel to it, which I like. And the high contrast black and yellow is very striking and fun to paint!

This will be a relatively modest Warband (probably only around 1,000 - 1,500 points worth for the Seige battle (honestly I suppose it just depends on how much can fit in my case, which is pretty small.) once the entire Warband is finally finished I will paint up the Mad Count himself...

Anyway, to kick things off here are the very first models I’ve finished for the Averlanders:

The Averland Inner Circle Knights!

I had an absolute blast painting these Knights! I went with gold because since the Averland Symbol is a Sun, I wanted to give a nod to the Kights of The Blazing Sun, making my Averlander Knights worshippers of Myrmidia.

Next up will be this defensive detachment:

I have another 10 Halberdiers tucked away to make them into a good 20 man regiment.

Hopefully I’ll have time to get some of the rank and file done!

More to come soon!

@Dreadclaw69: Thanks! It definitely feels really good to be painting an army on full squares again lol. I count myself very lucky that I have some close friends that still love and want to play Warhammer Fantasy Battle.

@Rogerio134134: Thabk you! I’m glad you’ll be with me on this journey, Averland was always my favorite Empire County, colors and wacky count included.

@amazingturtles: Hey, turtles! Thank you, I’ve been painting a lot of plain gold on my Slaaneshi projects, so it was refreshing to continue the trend with these noble Knights, but in a slightly different way. I wanted to make each one unique in some way and still keep the theme!

@Kestral: Thank you! It’s gonna feel nice when I get them marching on the table too (and probably fighting along side my fiend’s 3rd edition era Dwarfs!).

So with this small update I’ve finished painting the first half of the Halbardiers Regiment!

Since I know this army won’t be that large, I want to put my all into each mini... I tried my best at hand painting the Averland County Symbol on each of their shields. I think I did an alright job, and succeeded in making sure they were eye catching. My only gripe is that some kinda tuned out looking either mildly disgruntled or confused lmao. Either way, I like the silliness and will continue the trend with any State Troop’s shields throughout the Force.

I also wanted to make sure they all kinda looked “Checkered” with each soldier being half yellow and black, with the one next to him mirroring the other.

Anyway, next up I’ll work on the Helbaster crewmen and some more Halbardiers!

Look great mate, I very nearly did averland myself but I'll worried about age of sigmar phasing out the old empire models. Plus AOS sucks and I miss fantasy!

@Rogerio134134: thanks, Averland is the best! Personally I’m not too worried about the eventual fade of the old fantasy models ... I’m very happy I have friends willing to play the classic WHFB and (LoTR!). That said though, if need be I’m not entirely against playing narrative AoS (but based In the Old Worlde).

So a very small update on the Averlanders:

We have the war machine crewmen for the two Helblaster Volley Guns!

These models were awesome to paint. They really are some beautiful sculpts, I feel like they really capture the feel of the Empire mini range. Very detailed and varied.

I guess next up is the Helblaster Volley guns themselves and some more Halbardiers.

More to come!

I love the old war machine crews. I have one, the cannon that came with the sixth edition set i think? and they're just a lot of fun.

These little guys are great, and RUN! on the book is perfect.

@ValentineGames: thanks! I know, right? I love how these guys actually have some armor on too lol

@amazingturtles: thank you, I love the old crewmen for a lot of the classic Fantasy War machines, they have so much detail and character.

@lipsdapips: Thank you! The scheme is really fun to paint (BTW I saw some of your Ultramarines - it’s some amazing stuff!)

So I managed to finish some more State Troops for the Halbardiers Regiment:

So for these guys I went with a Templar Symbol in the sun in order to make them match the Inner Circle Knights a bit. I also did this because I wanted some slight variety In this regiment since it’s probably going to be the most survivable unit in the army. I’m planning on adding 10 more to make a maximum unit of 30 Halbardiers for the army so I’ll definitely be painting another unique symbol on them as well.

The next couple of units will be more State Troops, some Archers and Crossbowmen:

I have another 20 Archers to break out too, but I’ll wait on those for a little while. Since Averland is mainly known for its defense, I decided that most of the State Troops should be ranged units.

Finally, we have Marius Leitdorf himself!

Man, this is just such a gorgeous model... I’m still going to wait to paint him last to finish the whole army, but I couldn’t help but get him built and prepped for it!

I also have a classic Marius Leitdorf model which I think I’ll end up actually using when I play some games with the army.

I really like this mini too, it has a lot of character and detail - definitely a great younger version of Count Leitdorf!

The older version is far less fragile and more game worthy, but the much larger and detailed Marius will definitely still be seen on the gaming table occasionally.

That’s it for now, I’m thinking the Archers and Crossbows are next, along with the Helblasters.

More to come!

Hey, everyone.

It’s been a little while since I last posted any updates about the Averlanders.

So despite real life getting in the way we have a nice little chunk of the collection finished:

Archers, Blackpowder and The Mad Count.

First up we have a couple new units. One regiment of Crossbowmen and Archers

I decided to stick to a very simple color scheme, just black with the same striking yellow as the Halbardiers. I think it kind of makes sense that these skirmishing units would have a much more modest uniform with more black than anything else.

We also finally have the two Helblaster Volleyguns!

Praise Sigmar for blackpowder!

Finally we have the Mad Count, Marius Leitdorf himself! Of course as I said the much bigger and newer version will be the final model, but i decided to do this one now rather than later since he’ll be the actual one I Game with... plus I want to start playing soon, even with a very small force lol

Loved the detail on this model. Flamboyant and powerful... definitely the Mad Count. I also did some extra gold details on Daisy’s Barding, but otherwise she fits in pretty well with the rest of the Knights..

That’s it for now. Next up is another couple regiments of archers and more Halbardiers... more to come!
