I couldn't see anything for Runewars, so thought I'd start a thread listing the upcoming releases, and hopefully getting some more discussion about the game. (Typically, I've started to get into it when most people assume FFG are going to kill it, but it's a great set of rules so I hope it sticks around!)

Next up will be two hero expansions:

Lord Vorun'thul for the Waiqar:
https://www.fantasyflightgames.com/en/news/2018/5/25/terror-from-beyond-the-mist/

Baron Zachareth for the Daqan:
https://www.fantasyflightgames.com/en/news/2018/6/1/baron-zachareth/

It looks like FFG is changing the box designs for these, and the upgrade/attachment cards are full size now, instead of the smaller size in previous releases

Edit: More info on the new wraiths now up:

I thought I was the only Runewars player here. Great to see another fan, although... According to a post in the official forums, FFG France is killing off the French version of the game.

Runewars probably doesn't have the brightest future, unfortunately. FFG basically killed it when they put everything on hold for 7-8 months to put out Legion. I think we'll get a few perfunctory releases that were already in the pipeline before the game is quietly sunseted in favor of Legion. Which is sad because Runewars is a pretty special game with a lot of potential and FFG could easily bring it back from the dead if they wanted. I just don't think FFG has the ability to run a miniature game long term.

That's a shame, and probably not a good sign! Legion does seem to have taken all of FFG's attention, but I'm hopeful that they'll keep Runewars going for a bit purely because it's set in their own IP.

I think if the game's going to survive it needs to branch out into some other factions as well. I've been reading the Realms of Terrinoth sourcebook (for the Genesys rpg), and there are plenty of other races they could start exploring, from standard dwarves and orcs to gnomes (!) and cat people. Plus, there are any number of monsters from Descent that could be expanded. Terrinoth is often derided as being a shallow, generic setting, but the Realms book does a really good job of fleshing it out and giving it more weight.

To be fair, Legion took this corner of their attention, but frankly I still feel like every game BUT X-wing lives on a razor's edge. Even Legion and Armada feel like a bad fiscal quarter away from being killed off. FFG is a very, very fickle company, and Asmodee took all their natural tendancies and made them sooo much worse.

I hate to say it, but losing Netrunner might have been the best thing to ever happen to Runewars. Terrinoth needs a big tentpole product for the license, and for better or worse, that's Runewars now that Descent and Runebound are dead.

Personally, I'd like to see them do more with what they have. Only now, with the scouts and wraiths, are we seeing non-standard troops, and I'd like to see that a bit more before they waste a six month release cycle on another set of infantry, archers, cavalry, command, siege, and two heroes. I'd like to see some of the BattleLore 2e units (especially the undead stuff) get RWM models.

Anyway, really hoping for a new RWM reveal soon. We already know what the Uthuk hero will be, and have had a glimpse of the Latari hero.

Well, the game isn't quite dead yet. They just posted news on the upcoming wraiths.

Really ? Has there been any confirmation of that or just supposition because they have gone dormant ? I'd hate to see those titles fade away.

Anyway, I was really looking forward to RuneWars but told myself I wouldn't jump into a new game (as I've done WAY too many times) before seeing regular support from FFG and seeing a regular player base locally. Sadly, neither has happened so I haven't bought into it. Maybe I will if it is headed for the clearance bins ...

Runebound hasn't had a release in a year, and Descent hasn't had a physical release in two years (there have been two app DLC releases, though none in a long time). With FFG, if it goes dormant, it is dead. If we're lucky, we'll get a Descent 3 and Runebound 4 one day.

You can currently get the core set on Amazon for $55 (roughly half of the retail asking price). Get two core sets and you've instantly got two full armies and enough dice to actually play.

And I bought a bunch of RWM stuff off Amazon for 40%-60% off a few months ago (including the recent Uthuk army expansion), before the price fixing algorithm noticed that people were buying these things and started setting the prices higher.

Firestorm Games in the UK were selling things off cheap as well; I got a good chunk of my Latari army from them

I don't know enough about Battlelore, I'll have to take a look at what was available for it. I agree though, I like that they're (slowly) expanding the unit types - scouts for the Daqan, the Darnati warrriors for the Latari etc

Very nice. People saw a picture of the centaur on the game night kits and assumed it was a new hero, but nope! It's a new unit, and the hero is riding some sort of leaf chicken! This is the kind of stuff they should've been doing from the beginning.

The centaurs are lovely, I like the direction they're taking the elves.

Ninja'd, I was just about to post that link.

This seems encouraging though, that they're still releasing new units and announcing them quite far in advance.

Viper Legion and Obscenes were in BattleLore 2E, and thus kind of expected units, but the new hero looks awesome. I will, of course, be picking up all this stuff, but as primarily a Waiqar player, I think the Uthuk and Latari got cooler toys. My allegiances might shift. I'll have to start painting some elves soon.

I find it supremely odd, though not unwelcomed, that FFG announced 5 new RWM products in two days. That's almost unheard of. There's a lot of possible reasons for this. Maybe FFG is done with RWM and pushing out the last products to get the factions to parity (probably not this, since they just redesigned the boxes and upgrade cards). Maybe the 7 month backup caused by Legion has put FFG ahead of the release curve for the game. Maybe FFG is doing a soft relaunch of the game to garner interest after losing Netrunner. Maybe FFG is moving RWM to a quarterly or twice yearly release wave schedule, with the whole wave being announced simultaneously.

That's my problem with FFG. You just can't tell what they are thinking. Even when something good happens, you're still looking around waiting for the other shoe to drop.

Looking forward to picking up the Latari elves models, but I have to admit that the game around these parts has gone quiet; 40K seems to be THE game at the FLGS lately.

It never ends well

Someone on FB noted that with these releases every faction now has parity (same number of heroes, units etc). I suppose the real test is what FFG does with it over the next six months after that. I think they're likely to stick with it though, they seem to have been investing a lot over several different types of games in the Terrinoth setting (Legacy of Dragonholt, the Realms of Terrinoth source book, and the upcoming card game).

Worth noting that the next four expansions (Outland Scouts, Wraiths, Darnati Warriors, and Kethra) will be released next week on August 2nd. This is a pretty big deal as this is the first actual new content in a long, long time. Wraiths were first announce in August of 2017 - almost exactly a year ago. The long dark night is finally over.

I'm really excited for the new stuff. I'm really hoping for something special at Gen Con (though there probably won't be).

Yeah, everyone's getting something good, it's going to bring some interesting new dynamics to the game. (Typically I'm not going to have enough time to add the Darnati to my Latari army before the regionals though!)

Gen Con would be a good time to announce a new faction as well - orcs or dwarves being the most obvious, but cat people would be amazing

RuneWars organized play ended. This seems like the end of RuneWars. I don't know why I keep trusting FFG with my money. It never works out for me.

That lasted about as long as we expected it to. For the people who like it - the bright side is if it is legitimately dead - keep an eye on Miniature Market etc. to find deeeeep discounts when they ditch the product.

It really feels like FFG has lost the plot. I hate to buy in to anything new from them because it ends up in the clearance bin or ends up bloated within the first year.

Yeah it doesn't look good, especially as they have said "and we will be in contact with 2018 World Champion Justin Hare and 2017 World Champion Ben Fox to work through the adjustment to their World Championship prizes."

You are generally safe with LCGs and X-Wing. Anything past that and you are risking the game line prematurely ending or getting strung along for years on skeleton releases. I'm reconsidering jumping into Legion when the new factions are released.

It's a real shame. I thought it was a good game. But the price point for the starter seemed really high, the timing was bad (released more or less at the same time as 40k v8) and drip feeding other factions meant it was always going to struggle.

That's a real shame, looks like the game's up then. I have to admit I was thinking about selling my Latari army, but it's probably going to be hard to shift now ...

I'm disappointed, but not shocked. The game is fairly good, but there was just something under the surface that was lacking. Partly the models, partly the lackluster lore, partly the slow roll out of the units.

I think I'll finish my elf army for the game, but I suspect they might get repurposed for other systems. I'm more of a fan of skirmish than rank and file, anyways.

Hmm, I've never played Kings of War, I suppose I could transition the elves into that system easily enough
