So, I have been working out of a toolbox for quite some time, but my paint collection has now moved beyond it's holding capacity. I also don't currently have a designated hobby area. Study desk, kitchen table, portable dinner tray...they have all served as my at-the-moment station. Now that my collection is becoming more of an eyesore at home, I am in desperate need of organisation. I have found a lot of interesting desk setups, but would love to see what each of you has done to create an orderly workstation. Post pictures, as well as links to products you have used.

I can clearly not choose the wine in front of you

Don't have my photos handy, but over at boardgamegeek, there's a modest but active minis painting guild and someone asked this there.

You might find some ideas to get started?

I play...

Sigh.

Who am I kidding? I only paint these days...

My corner of the garage. Very roughly, left to right and top to bottom: twin daylight spectrum lamps, stored terrain, boxes of tools and materials for terrain building, armies in storage, Dan Abnett novels, six project trays (refurbish, build, paint, base, weather, and the WIP junk tray), box o' sprues, textures/glues/paints for terrain, bulk foam, Dremel, paint storage, more stored armies, stainless steel workbench, cutting mat, two giant tackle boxes of sorted bits. Not pictured: temporary folding work table, beer.

Why Aye Ya Canny Dakkanaughts!

To be honest, as a filthy student, I just do the same as you.

I have a couple of boxes and cases filled with sprues and bitz as well as a DIY box filled with painting and modelling equipment (paints, brushes, basing stuff, etc.). Whenever I want to do some hobbying I simply clear my desk, put down some newspaper and start working.

Then again, I'm more of a modeller/gamer than painter.

This is the build&paint corner of my hobby room where you can see my desk, paints, tools and in-progress minis.

Not shown is bits and sprue storage which occupies many crates and boxes...

Lighting is key. There's an LED spotlight above my head as I'm taking the picture, two desklamps with daylight bulbs and the thin desklamp is a CFL for when color isn't as important or for getting light into tricky spots.

I don't have a proper hobby station at the minute, space in my flat is a bit tight. When I want to paint I have to clear space on my PC desk and fetch my models, palette and paints from whichever corner of my bedroom they've ended up in, perched on top of cabinets wherever there's space. I'm moving house soon though, and should have the space to set up a permanent dedicated hobby desk, which I'm quite pleased about.

Pegboard helps keep tools organized.
Tackle boxes for bits.
Plastic bins for basing stuff.
Boxes for pile of shame.
Chaos and mess for the rest!

Here is a slightly messy picture of my work station. It’s in my garage.
