I posted this about a year ago and wanted to update some info but figured a new thread was better then raising a dead thread.
Came across Mordheim: Warband Skirmish for my tablet and it has turned into a decent game.

Pretty basic but still has some challenge to it.
The default warband are Reiklanders to start. Other warbands cost actual money, by purchasing in game currency called Fate, to get access to, like Marienburgs, Middenheim, Skaven, Undead, with Witch Hunters and Chaos are right around the corner.
You use to have to use Fate to heal the injured but now you can watch an ad to heal them. There is no reviving dead warriors unless you spend Fate.
Mercs, magic users/pit fighter/warriors, can be bought with gold earned from selling warpstones or by spending Fate.
There are chances to play PvP and it will let you know when another player is looking for a fight.

Named my warband "The Stepdads" Motto: we're not mean, we're just adjusting

A good, free, game that does offer some challenge for being so basic.

I'm enjoying it. Undead are good fun. My warband is 'Dead Can Dance'.

Looks pretty cool on the app store page. Is this purely PvP, or does it also involve offline play?

Offers offline play as well as PvP.

They have improved Undead lately and made them more formidable. I used to just sit back and pick off zombies with my archers over and over to get the quick xp for leveling.

I've been enjoying the game since a few months after it launched.

I have three warbands:

Bretonnian Questers, a heavy armored greatsworder backed up by archers and spearmen. Has a high leader mortality rate with very few peasant loses oddly enough. When a archer became the leader I went with the Robin hood theme for a while until the next knight from Mousillon died in which case I disbanded him as an act of him taking the body back for burial and resumed the quest.

Baron's Blades, my Baron avatar leading swordsmen and handgunner heavy warband. Exact opposite of questors in that Baron miraculously lives, and gets stronger, through everything and even routed half strength warbands by himself when everyone else was out. High follower mortality rate and just really bad luck. I think I went through 2 whole warbands with him.

Azyrheim Auxiliaries, Stormcast cosplay force using comet halberds, crossbows, bright yellow clothes and heavy armor everywhere. Performs extremely well with only one leader loss to it's name and even then he went down because he got swarmed by at least five guys and took out two. Warband just keeps going strength to strength.

All forces are Reiklanders as I don't like spending money on apps.

Sounds like some fun themes you got there.

I have been rolling with the same warband, which consists of two melee units. The other two spots are a revolving door of archers that just seem to die once they are knocked out of combat. So my two melee guys are monsters in combat for Reiklanders.

I actually wouldn't mind paying to open up one of the other factions but I know what you mean.

I love the idea behind Mordheim and play the tabletop game pretty often, despite its many quirks. However I've tried numerous times to "get into" the PC game and I just can't.

Controls are awkward and the WAVE of stats and buffs, and debuffs, etc. is just off-putting. It doesn't scratch the same itch that the real and proper Mordheim does. Having said that, I don't find it scratching any itch for me.

I think a less-is-more or a proper streamlining could have made it a real winner. I was a bit saddened when they announced the same company will be behind the Necromunda PC game.

Whew boy I ran into a crazy fight yesterday with my Azyrheim band.

It was PVP against a band called Delta Force. It was just one guy in it, called Chuck Norris.

And holy crap did he nearly do my boys in. He used the top quality hochland sniper rifle with sights, he double shotted, used fireball and what I think is haste magic, had a reaction attack to anyone charging him he'd strike first with a gromril axe and had a full bag of heals that recovered 8 hit points of which I think he had 20 health.

My double shooting crossbows got some good shots on him and were heavily armored enough to barely survive his shots but he finally took down my elf bow "judicator" and my leader found out the hard way he had a reaction by doing a frenzy charge that got him one-shotted which stunk because he had healing herbs on him I wanted to use first.

Luckily my comet halberdier paladins were doing enough damage and shrugging off his blows so he retreated back to the objectives and tried fireballing them. My crossbows were on the roofs though so he couldn't escape their shots and I cornered him on the objective marker as the last turn rolled around.

Instead of making a fight of it which honestly could've gone either way he chose to disconnect.

It was crazy but I got 5 shards and no deaths out of it so I'm not complaining.

Yeah, haven't tried the PC version. You should try this one, the mobile version, it might be more to your liking.

Oh man, those lone wolf warbands can be a pain!
I actually decided to play in a PvP match against an undead group called Official Brain Inspectors. Realized they had put a lot of man power to range so I ignored the objective and went for the melee...barely got out alive. Kind of devious when I think about it, lured me in with the thought of easy melee.
