So, I'm curious. Which do you think is the most powerful army to play at 1000 points. You're welcome to base your answers on the new 2nd Edition core rules that have been released or the current 1st Edition rules. Yes, I am aware things will change when the General's Handbook 2018 rolls out as point costs will change as well as summoning and magic, but I'm just curious what you all think right now. I ask because of a couple of reasons:

First, I am currently and will be on a very limited budget for a while at least as I'm getting married (to a wonderful woman) in less than a month.
Secondly, time (which times into the first reason). My fiancee was married and has a two year old son. Both of them absolutely come first before any piece of plastic. While I may have a few hours to paint one day, the entire next week, I may be down to half an hour a day at most. And, that leaves little time to play. BUT, my fiancee has nothing against me going to play from time to time (maybe once a month or so).

All that said, I doubt I'll have much time to play a full 2000 point game often. So, I would prefer a fun, but strong, 1000 point army. I'm interested in your opinion.

Thanks in advance!

Humming Great Unclean One of Nurgle

We have the 2nd ed rules so I voted based on that. Nurgle, because they summon the same amount of stuff at 1000 pts as they do at 2000.

Road to Renown! It's like classic Path to Glory, but repaired, remastered, expanded! https://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/778170.page

I chose an avatar I feel best represents the quality of my post history.

I try to view Warhammer as more of a toolbox with examples than fully complete games.

Just buy what you think looks cool. You will enjoy that army a lot more that any power game'd list someone could create.

If your plan is tournaments, wait a few months to see whats popular. It'll probably be something that summons.

Nearly 3k+ points of Slaanesh (AoS)
2500 points of Ironjawz
Too many points of Space Marines.

I would love to go to LVO to play both 40K and AoS, but I'd be there just to play for fun... not to make it to the to 8. I mean, it'd be fun to win a game or two, but not looking to try to take home first place.

Gathering the Informations.

I mean, what's the goal here? Low model count? Easiest/cheapest to do?

There's a lot of variables at play. I'd say an Idoneth army with MSU eels, a Leviadon, and Volturnos would be pretty strong--but it'd also be kind of expensive to do.

You could play ironjawz. a 1k list can be built with just a get started, a weirdnob warband, a box of brutes, and a megaboss. comes out to be around 200 usd? Cheaper if you look to ebay for LGS sellers who sell for about 20% discount.

I keep getting told by the local number cruncher that Seraphon are going to be absolutely bonkers in 2nd.... I'm not buying it. Even if that's my army.

There's no rule that says I can't.
Hive Fleet Hercual - 6760pts
Hazaak Dynasty - 3400 pts
Seraphon - 4600pts

They will be incredibly strong, but not at 1000pts. Their (no pun intended) "engine" to get Summoning running is too costly to succeed at 1000pts. A Slaan and Astrolith Banner would literally eat up half your points.

11527pts Total (7400pts painted)

4980pts Total (4980pts painted)

3730 Total (210pts painted)

Gonna say the Beastclaws. They saw a nerf with 2017 that put them on the back foot but now the monster spam is back and quite frightening.

Nurgle. Their summoning doesn't scale at all, so it gets more silly at low point levels than free summoning is in general, and they have a general baseline durability that is difficult for most armies to punch through at lower point levels.

Unhealthy Competition With Other Legions

DoK are really good. Hag nar with a cauldron and a bunch of witches are just as survivable as a lot of nurgle while pumping out a hurricane of full reroll attacks

For me it was a tie between Legions of Nagash and Stormcast Eternals. Both have their strength. With Legions, if you don't bring an army that can focus down their units, they're going to heal back. And even if you do, they might just come back on a gravesite, all while your army gets whittled away to nothing. Stormcast, on the other hand, have the staying power to stick around and hit very, very hard.

Twisting Tzeentch Horror

Go stormcast. There's plenty of ways of saving money with them, they are pretty darn strong, can ally in any order, easy to paint (and fun).

They're the poster boys for a reason. A new soulwars box half will get you just over 1k.

Tzeentch seems the most powerful in general to me.

Step 1: Take as many wizards as possible.
Step 2: Flee from your opponent casting spells.
Step 3: Free stuff

Don't fall for the soulwars bait!
I got the box myself (stormcast half) for really cheap, but i realized when trying to build a legal list that the model count is all over the place, so if you want to do matchend play you'll also have to grab a supplementary box or two. Which is still very cheap compared to the other alternatives, it's just not done with 40 bucks.
