Hello everyone ! I'm starting a Death army as a side-project, as I love the idea of an elite army that can resurrect entire units. My faction will be the Grand Host of Nagash.

However, I still have some trouble choosing between moar Morghasts or moar Grave Guards. Having never played with or against Death, I'd like some advices about which one is more advisable.

The first list is more oriented towards brute strengh through the Morghasts, even though Nagash is left more vulnerable.

The second list is more efficient at attrition fight, thanks to more Grave Guards that can resurrect, and the First Cohort battalion.

Grand Masters, what are your opinion ? Thanks in advance!

+ Leader +

Nagash [800pts]

+ Battleline +

(2) Morghast Archai [220pts]: 2x halberds

(5) Grave Guards [80pts]: Sword&Shield

Here is the second composition that is tempting me =>

If you're playing Matched Play using the General Handbook missions you're gonna get smashed. There are a fair few which require multiple heroes. Would recommend you try to get in at least a necromancer.

I agree with lare2 in that you need more heroes but not just for scenarios. Death armies rely heavily on heroes for buffs/healing. Nagash needs additional casting heroes otherwise he loses out on potential casting since he innately only knows 4 spells plus one from a lore of death. He does know the spells of all death wizards on the battlefield which adds to his versatility and gives you access to the spells necromancers/Vamp Lords know.

The Morghasts are going to hit hard but since they lack the SUMMONABLE keyword, they can not be healed by deathly invocation and can not be brought back via the Endless Legions command ability. I think the only way you can heal them is to use the lore of vampires spell vile transference. On paper they look incredibly tough while in play are squishier than you may think.

Your grave guard on the other hand benefit from both because they have the SUMMONABLE keyword. I've tried taking them in smaller units of 5-10 and they get shot off the table by due to their relatively low save especially when rend is involved. If you're going to field them, it's best to take at least 20+ strong units. If you're using them to fill out battleline, you would save points and be better served taking units of five dire wolves. They can be your mobile objective/warmachine/caster hunters and are cheaper than five grave guard.

Those are just my experiences playing Legions of Nagash so far. I hope that helps.

Thanks for the answer ! I stopped watching this thread, thinking no one would answer.

Indeed my fantasy of a lone Nagash and some very elite Morghasts and Grave Guards seems compromised. I don't want to start adding small heroes like necromancers or vampires, nor cheap units like dire wolves.

Guess i'll stay on my main project of a full Ironbreakers/Irondrakes dispossessed army

Thanks for the feedback guys! It did help a lot, even if the result is me not going LoN
