First trailer for nicolas cage's crazy new movie came out today. I tend to like weird artsy films so this is looking promising to me.

Final gag is from Phantasm II. Put it another way, I am in.

That said, artsy films really are a mixed bag. Recently saw Hereditary, which was a let down.

As the trailer played, first I thought it looked terrible, but then it kept leaning in and leaning in, and now I really want to see it.

The trailer looks like it was created by an algorithm combining every Goodbadflicks movie into a single trailer.

I don't know if I would classify this as art film (I know it's just a trailer) the second half of the trailer made it look like it was B-movie action schlock, still looks fun although Nic Cage has been in a lot of dud movies.

Well the first hour is supposed to be slow and trippy, after that it turns into an action film. There is certainly a mashup of genres at work though. The guy who directed this movie also did beyond the black rainbow, dunno if anyone has seen that but if that isn't an arthouse flick....well. I will warn you guys beyond the black rainbow has a cool vibe/atmosphere but little if any entertainment value, it's more like a movie you would put on in the background while you paint, and don't actually watch it.

Mandy looks like it made made to be a midnight movie/cult film, it'll probably fly under the radar for most people.

That first hour might only be 20 minutes to setup action scene after action scene I mean none of us know as it isn't out yet, that being said his other work kind of hints that this might be more arthouse, like you said.

Has anyone seen Beyond the Black Rainbow from the same guy?
Opinions?

Mandy debuted at sundance and cannes so people have seen it, the runtime is apparently 2 hours. But based on early reviews the movie is deliberately paced up until a point where we get to see a classic cage freakout and then it goes off the rails (chainsaw duel etc).

BtBR is like a movie that I want to be great, but it just isn't quite there. I did like the soundtrack and visuals, it definitely felt nostalgic and filmed in an old school way. Kind of feels like a psychedelic trip. But it meanders a bit with little plot substance. Now with something like Blade Runner with interesting characters/themes you can get away with slow pacing. But this movie kind of felt like it suffered from the directors inexperience. Despite that it looks and sounds cool, so at least that is something.

Yeah, sorry, I kind of read the thread "in stealth" and I skipped the post.
Thank you for the "review"

I have never seen Nicolas Cage in a Dud film. Bad.... sure.... but they were never dull.

Yes, Nic Cage hamming it up is great and can definitely make a bad movie more entertaining. That being said National Treasure is pretty mediocre and Nic isn't very crazy in it, so that can happen as well (don't know how common that outcome is with Nic Cage).

Mandy also has Johann Johannssons final soundtrack work (he died back in feb), I liked his scores for prisoners/arrival/sicario and this sounds pretty different but very fitting for the style of the movie. I would have loved to see what he originally came up with for blade runner 2049 but they wanted a more bombastic Zimmer sound that took more cues from the original BR.

Comments suggest this is a slow moving psychedelic trip and not an action film, as I suspected. BR2049s trailers also hyped up the action a bit as well even though the film was the opposite of an action movie. This seems to be a trend with trailers sometimes, focusing on being exciting but not really representing how the movie actually is.

Looks to be more of the same garbage from a actor, whom should have the decency to stop making acting. But I guess if I ever where to stuble over this movie while mindlesly drunk Id watch it

Funny enough some people said this kind of felt like it was trying to be a midnight movie. So stumbling on it drunk late at night by yourself might actually be the best way to see this. It comes out next weekend anyways so not long before i'll be seeing it. Also here is a more in depth soundtrack preview:

So I checked for showtimes for this and it is definitely a limited release film. I would have to go on a longer drive than i'd like. Good thing is it also happens to release for rent/digital purchase on the 14th on vudu/itunes. So while I may not get to see it on the ideal big screen, at least I can see it at home. I'll probably post my initial thoughts on it late friday or most likely saturday.

Just saw this film. It's an old-school hesher dream made manifest. Cannot recommend it enough. The chainsaw fight should be enough to satisfy the Dakka crowd.

It's on Amazon for $6 rental.

Just finished it as well, definitely was what I expected and wanted out of it. Some really good visuals, oddly enough I find myself liking the first half more than the second. Still really solid overall but I can understand it's not for everyone. Cage puts in a great performance with few words but his face says enough. I'm still processing it but i'm sure i'll watch it another 1 or 2 times this weekend.

Also did anyone else get a silent end credits? I think I had an error on my digital copy.

I hear you. It almost loses itself in the momentum of the 2nd half.

I've had this movie in my mind since i've seen it, last movie to do that was Annihilation early this year. I learned the F in the Celtic Frost band logo inspired the design of the axe.

I've been thinking about how this stacks up against beyond the black rainbow. I feel like this is more accessible to an average moviegoer but not in a bad way. This movie has more intensity and someone to root for. But it is also a tad more cliched since it's at it's heart a basic revenge story. The execution and style is what makes this stand out, not the story by itself which is barebones. There is a nostalgic artsy feel to it as well. But I feel like most of the things I liked about it were in the first 70ish minutes.

It does devolve into some hobo with a shotgun grindhouse esque gore cheese. It isn't necessarily a bad thing. It's interesting seeing different audiences clash over this. Some people wanted an actiony revenge flick with cage rage and gory violence but it's paced more like an arthouse film. As a result i've seen people saying 30 minutes should be cut out etc. I think that's absolute nonsense. 2 hours is a fine runtime for a movie like this.
