Hi all,

New to the forum but hoping some of you experienced players can offer me some advice!

I recently started 40k, along with my friend.

I chose Necrons and he chose Blood Angels, we both purchased the start collecting boxes and we've added a bit to them.

We played the other night and limit the points to 800, we both ended up almost exactly the same point score give or take a couple of points but I felt my army was severely underpowered. I didn't have my annihilation barge as it isn't built yet but I had a Stalker and 5 Praetorian with 2 overlords. He is using his starter box but instead of using his Baal Predator, he had a land raider on the table alongside a death company dreadnought.

By the time I had dealt with his charging dreadnought who he had constantly locking my warriors into melee combat, his land raider had gotten into my end of the table and I really couldn't do anything against the multiple barrages of attacks. We have said that 2000 points could give a great stopping limit to play with but I'm curious as to what would even up the playing field. When he's using his predator also I think I'll struggle more, but I will have the annihilation barge built by then.

My thoughts are a Necron monolith and shard of the deceiver, then maybe some extra immortals or Praetorian to use to deep strike, I'll hopefully be reversing roles this way, does anyone have any good advice to defeat heavy armour with the Necron army?

Take a look at the necron tactics thread. You need destroyers or DDAs to deal with vehicles, dont use a monolith. Tesla immortals buffed by an overlord are good. Dont use a stalker, unless you have nothing else, its not a good unit. Turn you annihilation barge into a catacomb command barge.

Thanks for your response, ok I'll take a look into those things, the trouble is I purchased units that I liked the look of rather than units that are effective for this situation!

Well, unfortunately things that look cool arent always the best units.

Adding on to the post above, I too am a new necron player! There is nothing wrong with collecting units you like, just remember that the rules are always changing in this game, and certain units that aren't great right now, might get better (or worst!) in future updates to the rules.

Having said that, I would really recommend purchasing a Doomsday Ark when you get the chance, its one of the only long range necron anti-big stuff units in our army. A unit of Destroyers are also good against most multi-wound things, and are fast to boot!

However, having said all of that, if you LOVE the Monolith model (its so iconic!) than by all means BUY ONE and USE IT! From what I understand, Land Raiders themselves aren't in a great spot ATM anyways, so might as well fight fun with fun!

If he's putting everything into a Land Raider, take 6-8 Scarab swarms and either surround it so that nothing can exit it, or just to make it not be able to move forward/fire.

Good responses guys, I'm going to grab a doomsday ark and I'm thinking about imotekh too. Unless anyone has any other recommendation instead of imotekh?

He not only has the land raider, but a baal predator and dreadnought, so getting to the units to get into close range has proved somewhat difficult so far!

Imotekh is pricey, for less points you can get two overlord's, which under most circumstances is better. He also restricts you to sautekh, which might not matter.

I've got two stalkers and two barges, and I'm expecting they will be useful when the faq drops later this year. I like both models, and only play friendly games. Buying stuff you like the look of helps motivation to build and paint it, so I would stick with that unless you're going to play lots of very competitive tournaments.

If you magnetise your ark you can switch between the two, which, again, in friendly games can be good. If you have other anti tank then the ghost ark can make your warriors extra tough, and it has the damage output of 10 warriors by itself.

I had a doomsday ark kill a landraider in 1 turn. at -5 ap and d6 damage if you roll high on the number of shots and hit many you can kill it easily. I also tend to rely on my infantry to do heavy hitting to vehicles. I've had 20 man warrior blobs slowly pull wounds off many vehicles including land raiders, knights, and storm ravens. I had a mephrit blob of warrior within 12" of a knight, so 40 shots hitting on 2+ with my will be done, then i had 6 6s to wound. at -2 ap he is relying ona 5+ save. I ended up doing 5 wounds with 1 infantry unit. it might be a little slower process but he was tabled by the end because he could only focus on 1 unit at a time.

Somewhere over the rainbow, way up high

Welcome to the silver legions!

All things said, the Doomsday Ark, and a squad of x6 destroyers with extermination protocols are your best go-tos.

Destroyers IMO are the best unit in our codex, you cannot go wrong with them when run properly.

Bedouin Dynasty: 10000 pts
The Silver Lances: 4000 pts
The Custodes Winter Watch 4000 pts
