I see there has been a shooting at a newspaper building.

Wonder what the shooters motives were.

It is a tragedy, and probably will be over something trivial it is certainly not worth killing over.

I'm kind of growing beyond learning what the motives are. I'm beyond learning a damn thing about the perpetrator.

Listening this morning to a discussion on the failed sniper who idolized the Parkland shooter... we definitely need to stop talking about the people who do this gak.

Professional gakstain Milo Yanno-whatshisfeth went on record yesterday, saying "I can’t wait for the vigilante squads to start gunning down journalists". Then this happens, with a 20-something white dude as the perp. Jeebus.

I remember a number of years ago, following a police officer killing of a black male, a number of friends were screaming about how "people need to start fixing this themselves, because the justice system won't do anything."

Then more then a dozen cops were assassinated in a few days span. They of course didn't say a single thing about it.

Anytime an donkey-cave starts screaming about gak like that, well, they're donkey-caves.

So, FOX was discussing what the motives might be, and if it might be political if the paper was politically biased. They then say that it's unlikely as the paper isn't really biased and just a run of the mill small town paper.

Apparently some people are loosing their gak over this. As in people think FOX thought the paper may have deserved it.

So Dutch news is reporting too that the guy had long standing grievances with the paper and had sued them twice for slandering him, that sounds like a pretty strong motive.

I don't know why anyone would think the right wing might have stoked violence against journalists.

Tell you what, I will agree that mostly likely the shooting was based on some personal conflict the shooter had rather than as a broader poilitical attack - because that's the statistical likelihood; if you put away the fainting couch and popped monocle at the audacity that people might assume someone heard one of the exceedingly loud dogwhistles the right wing has been blowing for months and decided to take them up on it.

Lets agree for civility, which is the most important thing, after all.

Eye of Terror

This hits close to home for me. Terribly upset about what happened.

I'm piecing some of this together. Feels like I'm staring at the dark mirror image of myself.

Jarrod Ramos is about 7 years younger than me. He went to the same high school, got a degree in computer engineering, and lived in a place I know very well. He was on the chess team I captained until 1991 and competed in many of the same tournaments. Some of other notables from this area include Edward Snowden and Bill Belichick.

From what I've gathered, he sued the Capital Gazette over a story about a criminal harassment complaint to which he pled guilty. The court documents are illuminating, he sued them over defamation on the grounds their story did not provide enough context. It was thrown out because nothing in the story was false.

Reading through his Twitter feed, it seems like he had trouble keeping a job and was absolutely bitter about it. He followed local politics and was brutal towards a number of judges and people involved with the paper.

Something I can tell you about the area, it's a little insular. On the one hand, you have NSA / Fort Meade, and many of the people you run into work in defense / intelligence. One of the games we used to play growing up was guessing what people's parents really did for a living, not everyone had a job that let them be forthcoming about what they do. OTOH, there's also this big boating culture. Annapolis is the mid-Atlantic's capital for boat sales, and there's a certain kind of wealth and lifestyle associated with that. Sports are a popular pursuit and a number of professional athletes who achieved at high levels came from this area. Creative activities too, we had a lot of artists of some note.

It's a great place for people who are really outgoing and aim high. It's not always great for the smart sensitive types that want to go their own way. I knew a lot of disaffected kids growing up, who just didn't fit in and had a hard time socializing. Some parts of his story about people not being nice in high school rang a few bells for me. Most people move on from that and it's clear this person never figured out how to make that happen.

This is the absolute opposite of what this person was supposed to do with his life. It's clear to me he is intelligent and was given a lot of tools to succeed but chose to waste them on petty acts of harassment and revenge. Not sure how many of the details about smoke bombs and removing fingerprints are true, but it sounds like a lot of advanced executive function went into planning / executing this assault. How someone uses their gifts towards these ends, I will never know.

It's horrible.

Bit of a strawman there? Milo doesn't have anything to do with Fox News. Nor does one individual speak for an entire political group. Just pointing out how knee-jerking and overreacting some peoples' response can be to benign news coverage.

Saying this act of violence was inspired by a comment in the media would be a huge stretch.

This is someone with a grievance going back years who was clearly off-track for a long time before that. I don't see the benefit of dragging the current political climate into the discussion, that does not seem relevant.

It was a completely made up story serving to rile up a portion of the population with a raging bias and zero critical thinking skills.

You know, like the stories of minority leader Nancy Pelosi's daughters being arrested for drug trafficking and turning State's evidence against their mother .

And this little gem from NRA spokes person Dana Loesch from 2016. These seeds were planted a while ago and are now bearing fruit.

https://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/americas/maryland-shooting-latest-nra-dana-loesch-journalists-gazette-gun-control-a8422566.html?utm_source=reddit.com&utm_source=reddit.com

Ms Loesch, who is a spokesperson for the largest gun lobbying group in the US, said: “I’m happy frankly to see them curb-stomped. I mean let's be real about it.”

“These people are just the worst thing that could ever possibly happen to the American political system right now with the way that they cover so many things. Nobody gets a fair shake on policy, no one gets a fair shake where it concerns immigration. They conflate illegal and legal immigration.

“They conflate a number of things – particularly the coverage on gun control. I have so many things that I hate about mainstream media, there is no way we are going to fit it in the allotted time today. They are the rat bastards of the earth. They are the boil on the backside of American politics.

You contend that public figures calling for the 'gunning down' and 'curb stomping' of journalists are not monsters?

Loesch doesn't advocate for violence... and any longtime reader/listener would know that.

But, what you've bolded in your post... she's not wrong.

But hey... keep on insinuating that, I maybe I'll re-up my NRA membership, and buy my wife one.

EDIT: to be clear... That was Shaun King in that link...

Shaun King is garbage. Reckless garbage.

In just over a month:
- He wrongly accused an officer of kidnap and rape
- He sicced an online mob on a reporter who he falsely accused of racism
- And now he’s blaming Loesch for the newsroom shooting

The NRA represents firearm manufacturers. This informs how they operate and why they do what they do.
