I've saw some commercials for this and didn't think much of it. i am not much of a TV watcher, and the only show I follow is Walking Dead, and before that it was Breaking Bad. But I saw Preacher for the first time last night (Season 3, episode 2 I think), and I have to admit it looked pretty good. I like the idea of what seemed to me some pretty powerful peeps battling some shadow war, if that is what was going on. I don't know anything beyond 30min of what I saw. Some chic had been killed and raised from the dead.
Should I set some time to binge watch the previous seasons? I am sort of binging Zombie Nation when I have the time, so when that wraps up...
So far, and I've not seen S3 yet, the previous seasons have been v different from each other, the crazy really gets turned up to 11 in S2 compared to the majority of S1.
I've really enjoyed it, but I'd be wary of recommending it to someone I don't know well because some of the content has real potential to offend people with conservative views, especially of a religious leaning. I've every confidence that's at least partially intended, and as a heathen I'm ok with that, but to someone with sincere religious (and especially Christian) beliefs the irreverence that the subject matter is treated with would likely be too much.
Edit. Also I'm not much of a reader of comics, so I'm not wed to the source material at all, a big fan of the books might see things differently, but given it doesn't sound like you've read them, I doubt that'd have much impact.

I heard their plan was to not follow the comic at all and checked out of it. S1 aparently takes place entirely before the comic... So the least interesting aspect of preacher.
Is the saint of killers in it yet?

These are my opinions. This is how I feel. Others may feel differently. This needs to be stated for some reason.

I watched a few episodes of the first season and also could not get into it. I also couldn't get into the comic, and I tried.
So if people here say it's amazing I might try again. Maybe it's a slow burn. Maybe it just had some bad episodes, Parks & Rec wasn't very good in the first season.

It's got the same basic premise as the comic, and roughly the same characters (Tulip seems the most different so far), but the plots are quite different in how they unfold. Season 3 looks like it's taking inspiration from the second collected volume "Until the End of the World", but if season 2 is connected to the comics, it's volume 4, Dixie Fried (and while both of those are set in Louisiana, the events are very different). Season 1 is sort of set before the beginning of the comic series, but takes some inspiration from volume 6 Salvation.
I suppose those of a devout nature could take offence - and I'm sure that was Garth Ennis' original intent (which he followed up with the Chronicles of Wormwood).
Spoiler:
the slow-motion gunfight between the Grail and the Kare Krishna isn't going to make the series any less controversial
The whole Arseface in Hell plot and whatever Hitler will be getting up to (working as a burger-flipper, going by Season 3's opening titles?) is all new to the series.
. I'm not a believer, so it doesn't bother me, and it will depend on your attitude towards Christian beliefs.
This series seems to be more of a character study than the comic was (or at least, how it started out). The pacing seems more like that in the later volumes - Salvation, All Hell's A-Comin' and Alamo - than the more action-packed early volumes.

Il probably give it a shot now that it has a few seasons under it's belt. I don't mind changes if the changes are for the better (better characterization for characters that barely existed in the comics. taking time to flesh out a plot that was plowed through quickly in the comic).
I only got turned off initially because they said they were not following the comic at all. At which point I was like "Then why the feth are you making it Preacher? Just make something else."
These are my opinions. This is how I feel. Others may feel differently. This needs to be stated for some reason.
It's about a southern preacher, his gun-toting girlfriend and an Irish vampire looking for God. That makes it Preacher. The fact that they don't get there by the same path is, IMO, for the better.
Yes, the take on religion and any intended offence was intentional by Garth Ennis.
Although a naturalised US citizen now, he was born and lived in Northern Ireland and saw what polarised religion can engender (especially in the mostly Protestant NI, as opposed to the mostly catholic RoI).
I'm OVER 50 (and so far over everyone's BS, too).
Old enough to know better, young enough to not give a ****.
That is not dead which can eternal lie ...
... and yet, with strange aeons, even death may die.
It's worth mentioning that most of his ire is pointed at the organisations of religion, not the belief itself. Admittedly has a go at God himself directly, but other than this discussion of the Problem of Evil, it's the corruption in religious institutions that get the worst of it (for example, the venal, fornicating, drug-taking pope in Chronicles of Wormwood having a go at his clergy for indulging in or tolerating paedophilia, or the depiction of the Grail). Jesus himself is usually treated well, and there's usually some decent people caught up in the organisations; Hoover for instance, and Featherstone to a lesser extent).
(Spoilered - don't reveal if you're likely to be offended)
Spoiler:
Having a simpleton inbred descendant of Jesus that's being kept underground, and when they meet him then Herr Starr saying "move away from him before he discharges".
I'm laughing to myself just thinking about that scene, but can imagine that is mega offensive to a lot of people!
That was Jesus' descendant, after 80 generations of inbreeding - and described explicitly as being the result of the Grail's manipulation for its own power.Jesus himself never put in an appearance in Preacher, and in Chronicles of Wormwood was depicted as reincarnated as a black man, beaten to the point of brain damage by the LAPD for the crime of asking people to be nice to each other. he gets on quite well with the Antichrist, and neither of them get on with their dads.

I had no idea this was a thing before seeing this thread.
I have a few of the comics, but not all. Generally enjoyed reading it.
Had a look at the first 4 episodes yesterday and kind of like it. Pretty solid casting so far (I like the Tulip character i nthe series ... always thought she was a bit meh in the comics).
Cas is perfect (annoying, actually, as he should be ...).
I think Cooper's OK as Jesse, but I can't help thinking Urban might have been a better choice ... probably just similarity in looks...
It's a rough but quirky ride. Season 1 is ok. Season 2 rocked. Season 3 just started.
This is the kind of show where Hitler is a short order cook...
-"Wait a minute.....who is that Frazz is talking to in the gallery? Hmmm something is going on here.....Oh.... it seems there is some dispute over video taping of some sort......Frazz is really upset now..........wait a minute......whats he go there.......is it? Can it be?....Frazz has just unleashed his hidden weiner dog from his mini bag, while quoting shakespeares "Let slip the dogs the war!!" GG

Now finished Season 1 and made a start on Season 2 ... yeah, I "really" like it now.
And they've realised the St. of Killers perfectly!
Spoiler:
Especially his relentlessness, badassedness and ... yes ... his guns! Not so much in the Ratwater saloon massacre, but the highway shootout with the cops when he first catches up with Preacher ... that is now one of my all-time favourite shootouts from any movie/TV show... holy Gak, was that intense ... and amazing sound FX, too.
My bod do I hate what its become, as whilst the comic book drifted into shock value for its own sake from time to time and could have maybe wrapped up 15 or so issues before it did its was a masterpiece compared to TV show, which has lurched all over the place and feels like its being made up as its being filmed, burying the (admittedly slender) ideas from the book in a bris poor wave of Rogen and Co's misguided idea of funny and/or shocking
plus the ways its going I wont get takes on my favourite issues of the book (Texas and the Spaceman, Monument Valley or Fairytale of NewYork), but on the upside Eugene wont get his happy ending either
