Amazing quality.

I really hope they don't get sued.

It's really easy to make a good looking model in a digital program. It doesn't always transfer well into plastic.

This. You can slap all the detail you want onto a digital render but there's a reason GW don't.

Grim Skull sculpt for Wargame Exclusive, and while their stuff is good it doesn't always match the renders. They haven't been sued yet, but they have had several 'conversations' with GW about what is allowable - and dropped some products as a result.

They actually do use 3D design not just sculpting.

And the models above are resin cast.

As a 3D designer myself. It's not a legitimate argument that somehow 3D rendering isn't art. It takes skill and years of effort to make something like above. It's a better medium than clay, greenstuff, etc.. more forgiving, requires just as much skill as an artist.

Either way it's awesome.

Not sure GW should take notes from something which takes their designs, copies them and knocks out something less aesthetically pleasing.

Yeah, as someone who just derps around in Blender, building something like a cube? That's easy. Building stuff with detail? Like, any amount of detail? That is HARD. Hell, it took me an hour to design a blank shoulderpad. A BLANK ONE.

Sim, you seemed to imply (just by your tone) that it's easy to do.

If that's not what you intended, and that does indeed seem to be the case, it's just an example of misunderstanding the subtext of your words.

They are definitely going to get sued. That Chaplain doesn't even pretend not to be GW.

Its not just the overall, its down to the little nitty-gritties, such as they shape and structure of the backpacks, with 2 large vents either side at the top, and 4 small vents either side of the lower unit. And the underside of the shoulder pads, with those distinctive holes in them exactly like GW Space Marines. It is covered in Purity seals, has a Cherub, a winged-head mace, and a Skull Helmet. The only non-GW looking thing is the pistol, which looks like a Plasma Pistol with a Bolt Pistol magazine attached.

Otherwise, it's a great model, but a 3D render doesn't always translate to plastic or resin. See Finecast as one example.

Not bad at all. Fits the setting.

However they aren't even trying to hide what it is so...

They could always 3D print it, much better quality than casting. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5YrUQOYLoK0&t=13s

And waaaaay more expensive unless you have the machines already.

Is it? good casts produce almost exact copies of the (often 3d printed) masters used for the mold. They could 3D print it to sell?? because that would be ridiculous. What does this post mean?

Not super ridiculous, but the start-up costs would be rather high. Companies like 4Ground are moving into 3D printing their minis instead of resin casting. While it takes companies like Zealot and others to produce "master" copies for a lot of 3D sculpt companies ---- I think the cost of a good 3D printer, and the time it takes to print will continue to drop.

In the future I do suspect companies may be running a dozen or more machines printing out specific miniatures instead of producing them in resin.

There are 3D printers out there which are world-class...but you're paying an arm and a leg and the print time is still an issue.

I believe they do 3d print the masters from CAD, but the cost and time of the 3d models is insanely high and a long way from profitable at the moment for the level of detail required for mini's for the cost per mini.

I know most companies do exactly that - they send the files to companies like Zealot Miniatures who have access to the mega-printers.

However, in a somewhat bizarre choice...4Ground is actually 3D printing some of the limited edition minis (likely the Kickstarter only ones?) for their "Fabled Realms" game. I don't know the full details, but it sounds like they considered resin and then didn't...

? I agree though...it's a crazy route to go, but not one which won't become increasingly popular as we (as a culture) iron out the costs and precision of 3D printing.

They already have, for miniature sized models anyway. It's called DLP printing.

I mean, within a reasonable cost. I know we have the accuracy and can make brilliant 3D printed stuff ---- but it's cost and time prohibitive from a market standpoint.

I'd rather they take note of companies like warlord or Rubicon.
I'd happily have 30 guardsmen for £25 instead of 10 for £18.
What's that? 3 tanks for £50? Yes please.
Multiple turret options without needing to buy extra kits? Thanks!

He said that it was possible to put lots of detail in to a 3D render which wouldn't necessarily translate well to an actual physical miniature. The other guy getting weird about whether or not it's "art" is a chip on his own shoulder, nothing to do with the original post.
