Subject: Imperial knight Freeblade Q&B question.

So im reading the IK pdf codex and when it comes to the quality and burdens section(p118) there is just something that i simply dont understand.
the text spesificly says that freeblades must have qualitys and burdens.
1 selected or 2 random qualitys.
2 selected or 1 random burdens.
then the text says this:
If a Freeblade from your army has any Burdens, roll 2D6 for them at the start of each of your turns, subtracting 1 from the result if the Freeblade has the Exiled in Shame Burden.
If the result is less than that Freeblade’s Leadership characteristic, their Burdens do not apply that turn. If the result equals or exceeds their Leadership characteristic, then their Burdens apply until the start of your next turn.
If a Freeblade from your army has any Burdens...........................
how can there be an IF when the rules spesificly says they must have qualitys and burdens?????????????
is this some sort of twisted pointless way of writing a rule that GW has come up with, or is there a way to NOT get ANY burden for a battleforged freeblade mono IK army that has completely gone past my eyes?????

Re-read the first line of the first rules paragraph. If you're not playing a game mode with Battle-forged rules, you don't get Qualities or Burdens. Being Battle-forged is only mandatory in Matched Play (which is the majority, but still). If you're doing Open Play or Narrative Play, you are able to just chuck whatever in.

It also doesn't say they must have qualities and burdens p119 you may give one freeblade in your detatchment qualities and burdens
You could have 5 freeblades in one detatchment
Only one would have them
(Excepting canis rex who has them by default) see canis rex + freeblade thread)

Ok, fair point, i did not spesificly say i was only going to play matched, my error!
but there it is, im only going to play matched, battle forged, mono IK.
As for "they dont say must have"
It says; If your army is Battle-forged, then before the battle you can give one FREEBLADE model in each Detachment Qualities and Burdens.
So that means i have the option to do it or not, for minimum 1 model but if i want it, for all models??
(my brain reads it as every single model is forced to add Q&B for matched play, cuz the way the sentence is formed means TO ME i am forced to do it.english is not my native language and im bad at it as you can see from my typing)
then it says; After determining the model`s qualities you must then either choose two different Burdens from the table below or roll one D6 to randomly generate a Burden.
So that again means i cant take a quality whitout a burden, as i read it.
"If a Freeblade from your army has any Burdens, roll 2D6 for them at the start of each of your turns, subtracting 1 from the result if the Freeblade has the Exiled in Shame Burden.
If the result is less than that Freeblade’s Leadership characteristic, their Burdens do not apply that turn. If the result equals or exceeds their Leadership characteristic, then their Burdens apply until the start of your next turn"
Is the quoted section above intended for match play, or open play?
If it is for match play, i cant understand how i can add quality and not add burden.

One freeblade gets them. You could be fool and designate two or more as freeblades though. Only one gets qualities and burdens while other loses house tradition for nothing but rules do allow it and you would have 2 or more freeblades in detachment and gw worded it so that even those who want to throw away free rules away for nothing have rules deal with it.
No point whatsoever doing so but...maybe it's gw's sick sense of humour as newbie trap?

Its maximum 1 from each detatchment not minimum one from each detatchment with Canis as the only exception

"you can give one FREEBLADE model in each Detachment Qualities and Burdens"
If you give two of them qualities, you're breaking the rules. You get a maximum of one, not a minimum of one.

Yeah. Who get the qualities and burdens. You COULD of course have more freeblades but those just don't have those. Thus "If a Freeblade from your army has any Burdens..." actually makes sense. You CAN have freeblades without burdens by having say 2 wardens you designate as freeblades. Why anybody would WANT to do that is another thing but it's completely legal if you don't want one knight to have any bonus rules.
Could be GW future proofing in case they add say freeblade strategems or something to make it sensible like IG players sometimes give up regiment trait by mixing regiments.
