Started at the tail end of 2nd ed. then played all the way through until the end of 5th. Tried a couple of games of 6th and decided that that edition of 40k was a bag of gak. 7th doubled down on the stupid so I sat out that one too and came back with 8th.

2nd Edition to Present. Played the most between 3rd and 6th. I really didn't enjoy 7th.

I'm not a big fan of 8th, either, but it's better than 7th. I have let go of the competitive urge in 40k. I still play to win, but I don't spend time crunching numbers anymore, nor do I spend a lot of effort on theory crafting. I just take what I have and mash it together and it mostly works.

I'm considering selling my Red Marines. I just don't enjoy them anymore. I've got my Guard and I'll never part with them, but I just have very little interest in the game these days.

All of the above.

RT more as a RPG, not so much with points and lists.
I didn’t play a lot of 2nd, but some.
Lot of 3rd.
Light on 4th
Picked up the pace again near the end of 5th, and kept going strong since then.

Began learning the game at the end of 2nd Ed., played 3rd and 4th and half way through 5th before realizing GW is all about shifting the game laterally, not improving it. Since then my little group has borrowed things from subsequent editions if they made sense or added in our own rules. I honestly don't see any of us ever going back to GW rules at this point - the shark hasn't just been jumped but parboiled in utter silliness. We haven't adopted anything from 8th Ed.

RT
2nd for proper gaming.
3rd
3.5th and the best fun I ever had.
4th
4 terrible games of 5th *pukes*
Skipped 6th and 7th as they were a joke
2 of 8th which I despised.

RT to 5th ed.

I stopped when they switched over to 6th and downsized several armies (no need to own over 10k pts in each).

I'm OVER 50 (and so far over everyone's BS, too).

So was 7th edition backwards compatible with 3rd edition codexes?

Mostly?

RT and 2nd were largely the same
3rd was a massive change
4th-7th were basically refinements and patches to 3rd. When a new edition came out it fixes some things, broke others, but the core was largely the same. You might need a FAQ for an codex from the pervious edition, but it would be largely playable. Some things, like when they introduced flyers in 6th, might not translate back well.
8th was a reboot akin to 3rd.

Started with Space Orks in Rogue Trader era, randomly rolling for weapons and equipment, loved it. Moved on with the editions until I grew out of it when women and booze became more interesting, missing 4th, 5th and 6th.
Marriage, kids and a new home rekindled the geek within me and started playing once more in 7th and on into 8th

Yeh literally all of them too. Got into 40k just after 2nd ed was released, didn't play a great deal during 3rd and 4th though. Came back with a vengeance during 5th (the best edition, obviously), and been at it since then (although haven't actually played a single game of 8th yet, because Frostgrave is just too compelling).

Strangely enough I didn't play Rogue Trader at the time because I was just a little too young, but I've had a bash at it since then and it's great fun (and also stupid and confusing, but mostly fun).

I own Rogue Trader, but I really started in ‘96 with 2nd edition. I really enjoyed playing 3rd through 5th, and I thought those were the best editions of 40k we ever had.

6th and 7th were ok with friends and campaigns where you could forge a narrative story, but they were horrible for tourney play.

8th just doesn’t feel like 40k to me. I know people are enjoying it and I’m happy to see fresh models and battle reports, but I have a very hard time ranking it with the other editions.

Proudly howling at 40k games since 1996.

I started to play 40K with the undisputed best edition ever made which was 2nd. Though most of my games were played during the 3.5 era with the use of Cityfight terrain. 4th and 5th followed and after the latter I basically quit to play any kind of modern form of 40K.
Nowadays I play two versions of 40K with house rules: 2nd and a mix of 3rd-6th.
