Ht there i have been doing pretty badly with this army since the start of 8th and have finally turned to here to ask for sage advice on how to build a great list for all comers at 2000 points. Advice on what units to take, tactics, sept, warlord and stratagems as well as anything else please dont hesitate to say. The units i own currently are:

HQ
Tau Commander Battlesuit (modelled with 2 fusion blasters, but could add more)
3 Hammerheads (one could be used as Longstrike)
Farsight
2 Ethereals
Cadre Fireblade

Troops
40 fire warriors

Elites
3 Battlesuits (modelled with 2 fusion blasters each)
3 Battlesuits (modelled with 2 plasma rifles each)
3 battlesuits (modelled with 2 burst cannons each)
Riptide (modelled with 2 fusion blasters and ion cannon)

Fast Attack
14 pathfinders
14 drones (can be used as whatever)

Heavy support
3 Hammerheads (one could be used as Longstrike as HQ, and can have any gun)
3 Broadsides (modelled with the rail guns)

LOW
Stormsurge with either main gun and burst cannons

Sadly... you really will struggle. The competetive tau meta revolves around a mass of fire warriors usually with 2 to 3 riptides. And the riptide’s Gatling cannon is strictly the superior choice

Is the best 2k list I can suggest from those models.
It's not top table list, and will take some learning to get the best out of it.
