A bit of background first. A friend and I split a starter box of Legion (Empire for me) and so far we haven't had the time to look into playing (or even have another friend teach us), so I find myself a bit in the dark on a number of things that I hope you can help me with. I'm not big on Star Wars lore either, basically only having watched the movies.

1. I'll have several Stormtrooper units that I'd like to be able to tell apart. I don't recall anything that told Stormtroopers apart in the original movies, except for the red shoulder thingy the squad leader has. Clone troopers on the other hand show all sorts of colored stripes in the prequels. Is this approach ok for Stormtroopers or is there any notable lore that categorically rules it out?

2. I don't have an AT-ST yet, but if I get one, I imagine plain grey might look a bit dull on such a big model. Does the Empire use camouflage on their vehicles? Maybe fore particular war zones? Or is it grey all day every day?

3.While I'm firmly one of Palpy's lackeys, I need and therefore ordered Leia and three Fleet Troops. Do I need any rebel cards from the starter box to use these (I don't have much experience with Fantasy Flight, just heard about the whole catch-em-all aspect they're pushing with cards)? I don't necessarily mind getting another starter box for cards since one can never have enough Stormtroopers, but if It's unnecessary that's money that could be put to better use (say for an AT-ST ).

4. Is there a notable functional difference between Stormtroopers and Snow Troopers? I like Stormtroopers, but I also like having a bit of diversity in how my models play. I don't like spam. I intend to go with a desert theme for my army and figure I could paint the Snow Troopers khaki and pretend they have adjustable temperature regulation and not just cold weather gear.

5. Those rebel Fleet Troops? Are they specific to Alderaan or anything? Or is the uniform more widespread? Might be of interest if I find painting the same squad three times too dull.

Stormtroopers tend to hold positions and provide long range fire support. Snowtroopers are far more aggressive and tend to be mobile objective grabbers that will severely punishing anything that lets them get within range one.

There's nothing faction specific in the starter you really need. You might want Luke and the Rebel troopers in it are a good way to fill out the Corp tax, but if you wanted you could play with Leia and up to 6 units of Fleet Troopers as your army.

In terms of painting, I'd say do what you want. The Star Wars lore has always been fairly malleable and everything about it is based on recoloring/reusing existing stuff in interesting ways, so there's probably room for any sort of paint tricksl. Personally, I went for the Clone Wars stripes to differentiate my Storm Troopers:

Thanks for the input. Nice army.

Good to see yellow stripes as that's my color of choice. Happy to see it'll look good.

OK, got another question.

I started building terrain (a house, Mos Eisley style) and want to make it climbable. To which the rules reference has this to say:

"height 1 (a single segment of the range ruler)"

How long is one segment of the range ruler? I don't own one yet (which I'd like to rectify, but that'll be a little while still).

Any help would be appreciated.

Can't speak as much to the hobby aspects (though colored stripes on stormtroopers seem common), but as for the game effects of the different units - Snowtroopers are assault units with close-range heavy weapons (the flamethrower is almost always taken) and want to move up the field and take the fight to enemy squads; Stormtroopers usually want to take an important spot and then sit there aiming and firing. They end up playing very differently as a result.

Thanks guys.

6" is quite a climb. Nice. Looks like climbing won't get in the way of building one way or another and I won't have to worry about the height of the roof.

I think I'm going to hold off of Snowtroopers for now until I've played the game myself. I figure with all the components in the starter set getting one is just a good idea for dice and rulers alone, and that will fill my third Corps nicely and give me some extra Stormtroopers to convert (have I mentioned that I love Stormtroopers?).

A flamethrower, though... Sigh. So much good stuff.

For the visuals I like the various stripes and different colors on units, it's not used much in the movies but it's very common in the video games and the animated series so it's definitely part of star wars canon. Plus it just looks cool IMO. I used blue striping on my units so that they had a 501st theme I didn't individualize the paint patterns but I think it helps break it up a bit from the solid white that the stormtroopers normally have, I currently have two of each squad so my plan is to do one in the 501st theme then the second in the standard white. Down the road I'll probably end up needing additional squads at some point and I may do a squad in red shock trooper markings or black for Deathtroopers.

The Star Wars universe is pretty vast so there's a lot of freedom in how you paint your minis, I think most people would be perfectly fine if you come up with your own lore and paint schemes to represent different planetary systems or specialist units.

Just had a look at your guys. Nice. A bit too much in the direction of clone troops for mine. My biggest issue is that I like the uniform, unadorned look of Stormtroopers, but at the same time also like flashy details*. Which is a bit hard to reconcile. Plus, there's no denying the practical considerations of telling apart your squads.

At the moment I'm considering a horizontal yellow bar across the lower half of the left shoulder pad (but not the ridge) with a black 01, 02 and so on for squad numbers. Or maybe A1. A2 or some such. I looked up the Star Wars alphabet seen in the movies and I might use a letter if I find one whose look I like that isn't a pain to paint or sculpt.

Then do the same for Scout Troopers, but with a vertical bar (since there's no ridge to get in the way of painting), marking them as a different unit type.

Plus yellow goes well with grey, which should take care of the vehicles nicely.

Edit: * that's part of the reason why I want to put dust and grime on the Stormtroopers - I'm hoping it'll give them a more interesting, individual look

While I'm normally a huge lore buff for Star Wars, I could tell that it would be difficult to keep my armies recognizable and in line with the lore. As such, I went with a... less than lore-friendly look for both armies. It isn't necessary to stick to the lore for the color scheme of your army, and some of the best-painted armies I've seen online are lore-breaking but still game legal. The Vader from the Imperial half of my core box has white armor and a green lightsaber. My rebels are a bunch of Chiss (blue-skinned humanoids with glowing red eyes) in white uniforms. One of my stormtrooper squads is painted in an inverse scheme of the usual stormtrooper colors (similar to shadowtroopers, but with white where there's normally a black bodyglove), and the other squad has green upper arms and a green-armored commander.

Bit of a rant, there, but I say just have fun painting your army. You want a camo AT-ST? Go for it! I've seen some awesome camo paintjobs online! You want your stormtroopers to be every color of the rainbow? I'd recommend keeping each squad one color, but cool! Don't feel restricted by lore-friendly color schemes because those can be boring or difficult (in the case of white) to paint.

Yeah, I'm not too concerned with canonical appearance:

That said, I do want to try the balancing act between official colors and my own stuff for the bulk of my army. I like the idea that what I'll ultimately end up with fits into the universe, even if it isn't technically presented in the movies.

And at the risk of sounding boring, I like Stormtroopers as they are. Always have. It's just the practical side of things that makes me want to add squad and officer markings so I can tell everyone apart.

I'm honestly not even decided on the AT-ST. Like I said, grey might look a bit dull and that's why I want to keep open to desert camouflage, but depending on how my test Stormtrooper turns out after weathering, a well weathered grey AT-ST might look pretty cool, too.

Nice. I was thinking of a single vertical stripe across the eye to mark an officer.

Dude, I am totally painting one of my Vaders as Hello Kitty Vader. I actually saw a cosplay of one at a Celebration once.

As for stormtroopers and stripes, you can do what you want, but I am leaning towards painting the edges of the bases in specific colors to differentiate the units. I tend to buy into the all white stormtrooper look.

Thanks,
Duncan

There was a slight change of plans. Instead of working on the terrain alone, I met up with a friend for a fun terrain building session. So instead of one Hutt hut I ended up with two, which I painted over the last couple of days:

Two down, only the rest of Mos Eisley to go.
