Hello KoW folks,

I am getting ready to wrap up the first round of my Early Roman Empire troops that I will be using in KoW historical and fantasy.

My question is: For models with the independent character (or the KoW equivalent) rule like (heroes or giants, etc), how important is it to be on rectangular, rather than circular bases? Would these circular bases not be allowed in tourney play?

Many thanks,
DrG

Giants for sure should be on square bases, and I'd prefer individuals on them as well, as flanks still matter in certain ways (like ensnare only working to the front). You could probably get away with small round-based heroes without any such rules? But as for tournaments caring, I'm gonna say that's up to the TO. If it matters, I've never faced a round-based model in a KOW tournament. Whether this is because of the prevalence of Warhammer refugees in the scene or what.

They were strongly against it last time I heard this come up; that said, if you prefer round bases for your individuals you can always blu-tack them to the correct sized square bases for the duration of the game/tournament

No biggie either way, as I haven't started painting them yet anyway. I'll just break them off of their round bases.

My individuals are on 20mm squares. Hope that'll work... Ballista on 50mm squares.

Those sizes are likely right for any of the human factions

You could always do slightly larger round 'display' bases with a 20mm square cutout for the gaming base.

“Good people are quick to help others in need, without hesitation or requiring proof the need is genuine. The wicked will believe they are fighting for good, but when others are in need they’ll be reluctant to help, withholding compassion until they see proof of that need. And yet Evil is quick to condemn, vilify and attack. For Evil, proof isn’t needed to bring harm, only hatred and a belief in the cause.”

Round bases used to be used in 1st edition, but their lack of clear front arc introduced a few exploits for units charing them, so 2nd edition updated the individual rule so that the models still add the effective 360° arc of charge and fire but without the abuses thanks to still having a clear facing to target when charging.

In theory you could probably use a round base if you clearly mark the front, side and rear arcs, but it will depend on your tournament, don't hesitate to asks.

At worst you can use a round base but have a square base/paper/mdf mini tray ready to pu under the round base if needed. Remember that you can always use a larger base than the minimum if needed for your individual model (or monster), so using a 25mm square base under a 25mm round instead of the min 20mm square is possible
