As the topic says I'm continually expanding my Imperial Skaven army (which is pretty much what it sounds like). Having finished up my Custodes and Marines I'm turning my gaze back to the Imperial Guard side of things and I've decided I need more tanks. Unfortunately the actual Chimera/Hellhound models are pricier than I'm looking for and they can't be swapped back and forth as needed with ease, which I'd like to do.
I'm told WWII Model Kits at 1/35th Scale are pretty close to Imperial Guard tanks so I'm considering ordering one as a test. I'd likely only use the "base" of the model, being the treads and lower frame. Past that I'm hoping to make things much more Skaven-y as follows:
Hellhound
Get some kind of smaller vat or other liquid container and using water effects make it look like there's plague stuff in it. I can then make several would-be hoses and have them manned by Plague Monks, which I have a ton of. Keeping with that kind of rusty/beaten down theme that Skaven (and the rest of my army) has I could likely do battle damage to the frame. It also seems doable to magnetize Hull Weapons as additional Plague Monks with a Heavy Bolter, Flamer, etc.
Chimera
For the Lasgun emplacements I was thinking I can just magnetize the squad to the model, this would keep the same look as the Hellhounds (kind of a roving platform) and also make it obvious whether a unit is embarked or not. For the turret I was thinking either the gun piece from a Warp-Lightning Cannon or the side guns from a Doomwheel, they look fairly lightning-y much like a Multi-Laser. That's likely the only Turret Weapon I'd use so I can table other ideas for now.
Tying Together
As the basic premise is a mechanized platform with actual infantry doing the "shooting" it might be a good idea to build some barricades or other cover on top, otherwise things look a bit too out on the open. It would also give me more chances to add a Skaven aesthetic if needed.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
While I have the rough idea I'm hoping for feedback on it. Most importantly I'd love to hear from anyone who has used miniature kits as the basis for a model, how did it turn out? Is 1/35th the right scale? Anything to watch out for? I imagine even though many of them look a bit dinky compared to GW sculpts that can be plastered over with plasti-card or a similar material. I'm also curious on feedback with the rough premise. Does it sound good, would you have any objections to using that in a game? I'm trying to be very aware of the proper dimensions which is why I'd like to start with just one as a test and move from there.
Thanks to anyone with feedback for me or even another direction/idea I could use. Most of my army is fairly infantry based so these would be a good opportunity to add some center-piece type models.
