Title says it all, there was a huge body of fantasy and sci-fi produced during the last millennium and I figure its as a good a time as any to relive those times! Lots of it might have been missed (esp as in those days many of us were limited to only 4 TV channels and DVDs were a thing of the future). So lets share what ones we know - esp the rarer or less commonly popular (eg everyone has heard of the outstanding Studio Ghibli stuff!)
Starchaser The Legend of Orin
Lensman (saw the better UK translation which appears to be harder to find or impossible on DVD now though the USA one is still out there)
Record of Lodoss War - this is what the Dungeons and Dragons film should have been!
Loved Lodoss Wars. I do find Anime being one of the only sources of fantasy and sci-fi films worth watching. I do think a bunch of them are pretty awful, but some are great. Venus Wars was a fantastic movie.
Just be sure you're watching the Record of the Lodoss War OVA and not the TV series. The TV series blew every bit of talent on a phenomenal intro and it went down hill quickly from there. It should also be noted that RotLW was actually based on a DnD game which is why they have a lot in common.
I would add Exo Squad to the list. It was made to sell a colorful toy line but the story was rather good and dark for a 90s kid show.
Exo Squad didn't have very good artwork, but the story line was pretty good - and very dark for a kid's cartoon (concentration camps, genocide, vengeance, racial slurs, etc.) I did love the Exo-Squad toys, they were superb.
I have to mention both Heavy Metal 2000 as one of the animated Movies I regard as a good and old film. Granted its a bit unsafe for work With the rather hefty body Count, and... alternative clothing but still. Same goes for Lady Death.
Fire and ice by bakshi. You can find the full lenght movie on youtube. The story might not be the best but the cartoon style is superb, and the barbarian character is awesome.
There is also a version of lord of the rings and some other cool movies by ralph bakshi.
Elbows wrote: Ninja Scroll is still a classic I enjoy as well.
Yes! I mean, the story is very by the numbers and done to death, but Ninja Scroll makes it a fun romp with some ace moments in there.

"NECROOOOOON!"
The animation style may take some getting used to, as the entire movie was rotoscoped to get those animations.
@bbb: you might also enjoy Mighty Max. Sure the main villian was a kind of rip off of Skeletor but he actually did some evil stuff (he made a zombie horde out of the population of Atlantis, I think). Also lines like "I'm going to show you a thousand new shades of pain" actually had weight to it considering the voice of Skull Master was Tim Curry.
And it looks like they made a sequel series recently. Does anyone know if it's any good?
Automatically Appended Next Post: I had never heard of Skeleton Warriors before, but that intro blew my mind. Was that as fething awesome a show as it looked?
Automatically Appended Next Post: Starchaser is vaguely familiar to me. I wonder if it is one of the cartoons I've been remembering for years but unable to place. My parents typically rented the weirdest cartoons and shows for us, like The Point, In Search of the Wow Wow Wibble Wabble, and some highly inappropriate cartoon about cavemen that I could have sworn was called 1 million BC.
Also, Robotix:
And I have a huge soft spot for Robo Force because of the toys.

I own both the first and second season (Waiting for 3 to be released in English here in America.
The second season is good. It is a little more child friendly but not necessarily to it's detriment. It picks up exactly where the first series left off. The voice actors being different is a little jarring, (I like the old Tau MUCH better), but what can you do? It's been so long since the first season. I hear the 3rd season gets more gritty like the original did. The new design on the Golden Condor is sweet. And you can actually see how they get in and out of it now instead of the just cutting to them in the cockpit because seriously, climbing up a smooth rounded gold giant bird statue is nuts.
I recommend if you liked the original.
These are my opinions. This is how I feel. Others may feel differently. This needs to be stated for some reason.

No, not even close you were better off turning it off after the intro was done, mind you I've only seen like 2 episodes both of which nothing of importance happens making for a bland experience so I may have not given the show a fair shake.
How many of these shows had amazing intros but the actual animation in the show isn't that great? Because I'm usually more impressed by the animation in classic Warner Bros. and Disney cartoons over the 80's ones in terms of animation.
I totally forget seeing David the Gnome! I can't remember anything of it but I do remember the intro kind of - in that hazy "I've seen this but I remember nothing of it"

Skeleton Warriors was very good in its day for its age range; and it was actually tighter to its story structure than many series. It sort of fitted into that pattern whereby more than just "monster of the week" happened each episode. So its one where you kind of had to follow the preceding episodes to get where it was going.
Also I can't remember the name of it but who remembers an animation which had the classic Good VS Bad where the bad also featured a huge dragon flying around on a flying chair?
