Your post and title are a bit in conflict. Canada is probably the USA's best friend - huge trade partner, undefended border, very similar culturally. Almost completely economically intertwined. The UK is probably the USA's closest ALLY - more comparable in terms of economic and military power to the USA than Canada, given the UK has a strong navy and nuclear weaponry, thus able to project force. Simply put, if the USA had to choose between Canada and the UK, they'd choose the UK every single time, even if it meant having to police a 4000 mile border a whole lot more.

Maybe you should ask if the UK or USA is Australia's best friend, but Australia isn't even in the running the other way around.

Mandorallen turned back toward the insolently sneering baron. 'My Lord,' The great knight said distantly, 'I find thy face apelike and thy form misshapen. Thy beard, moreover, is an offence against decency, resembling more closely the scabrous fur which doth decorate the hinder portion of a mongrel dog than a proper adornment for a human face. Is it possibly that thy mother, seized by some wild lechery, did dally at some time past with a randy goat?' - Mimbrate Knight Protector Mandorallen.

I recall reading that Australia is our closest ally, and has been at our side through the majority of conflicts over the twentieth and 21 centuries. No citation to share for the reference, though, so take with a grain of salt.

Definately I would prefer Mexico, Culturally where I live we are a LOT closer to them than Canadians in geography and culture. I would prefer much better and closer relations with the Mexican govt, and would vastly prefer treating the Mexican people a hell of a lot better.

Yeah, out of all the countries in The Middle East US does show blatant favouritism towards Israel now that I think about it.

Israel would happily fight to the last American marine, to paraphrase an old French criticism of Britain during the world wars.

But to be fair to Israel, they've always been honest about Israel only caring about Israel.

At any rate, I picked France, America's oldest ally.

You know I don't know if they are our best friend, after all I am not really sure how you decide that, but Australia has been with us in just about every war we've fought, even Vietnam.

Your average Aussie might dislike us, but the Australian government seems pretty tight with us. I would give the green light to come to their aid militarily in a heartbeat before many of our other allies.

You can focus on economics and trade and all that, but spilling blood for someone takes it to a whole other level.

Actually, while we aren't buddies in the traditional concept, Iron_Captain hits closer to the truth than most people want to believe. Warfare drives science and medicine, and the Cold War was a blank check for R&D, some of which we now benefit from in the civilian world.

Personally, I'd say Australia. They have always been down to boogie with us, and I have yet to meet an Aussie I didn't like.

That was the Brits, Canada didn't exist then. I don't know why you would trust them over Canada.

Listen, if you haven't at one point nearly burned down your friend's house how can you call yourselves best friend?

Canada will always win a poll like this- because it's not best ally, it's not strongest compatriot, it's best friend. Canadians love coming to America because we have summer, and a pool (or access to oceans warm enough that you should swim in them- I'm well aware somehow Canadians manage to swim even in their frigid waters) and we have the BEST junk food. Sorry everyone else, but it is no accident we are a massively obese nation. And Americans love going to Canada's house because it's cool to smoke, they have the most awesome pets and everyone is crazy polite.

Our bromance with Canada is the stuff that inseparable childhood friend movies are made of.

Well imagine this old and wealthy buisnesman - and he asks - "Which woman truly love me?" - so how would you guess which one really-really do?

There is a sying - "Russia have only two closest allies - Army and Navy"
In modern times I asume it's the third allies - the Airforce.

And something tells me that this is right for US too.

I disagree, I feel the UK and Canada are culturally similar enough and benefit each other enough to have a friendly relationship.
