First time playing around with a Knight. Guess I can have a warlord trait on the Knight for a CP and still take Grand Strategist. What do you think about this combo of House Raven w/ Ion Bulwark and Cawl's Wrath Relic? Any other recommendations for this style of army?

Super Heavy Auxiliary:

604 – Knight Castellan; { Ion Bulwark Warlord trait by Exalted Court} House: Raven, Heirloom: Cawl's Wrath

Catachan Brigade:

75 – Iron Hand Straken
30 – Company Commander – Kurov's Aquila, {Warlord: Grand Strategist}
38 – Company Commander w/ Powerfist

35 – Priest
28 – Platoon Commander w/ Powerfist
28 – Platoon Commander w/ Powerfist

45 x 6 = 6 Infantry Squads w/ Mortar

50 – 5 Rough Riders w/ Hunting Lances
50 – 5 Rough Riders w/ Hunting Lances
50 – 5 Rough Riders w/ Hunting Lances

108 – Basilisk
33 – Heavy Weapon Mortar Team
33 – Heavy Weapon Mortar Team

Blood Angels Battalion:

129 – Captain w/ Jump pack (Angel's Wing), Storm shield, Thunder hammer

129 – Captain w/ Jump pack , Storm shield, Thunder hammer, (Veritas Vitae)

145 – Mephiston

55 – Scout Squad

I don't think the knight can benefit from the House Raven rules. It needs to be in a Super Heavy detachment for that. How are the House rules described exactly? Can you still use the House Raven stratagem even though the knight can't benefit from the House Raven rules?

Also, put the aquila on the one commander and grand stratagist on the other. Makes it harder to get rid of all of you'r farming bonusses.

Because the Knight is in a Super Heavy Auxiliary detachment, it does not get the Household Tradition ability, or the Knight Lances ability. It does however, still have the <Questor Allegiance>, and <Household> Keywords on its datasheet. Under Stratagems, you gain access if you have any Imperial Knight Detachment. There's no exclusion for the Super Heavy Auxiliary, that only applies to Household traditions.

So no Household Tradition rules, but I still have access to the necessary stratagems and the House Raven and Questor Mechanicus stratagems in this case.

In that case, it works like a dream. The castellan wil be the enemy's main target for all it's anti tank but with a 3++ it should hold it's own for a bit.

The basilisk is dead meat turn 1 unless it can hide behind a piece of terrain. Not all battlefields have terrain pieces that big. Reason why it's dead that fast it because it's the only other vehicle on the board and other than the Castellan and it does not have an inv. save.

Why rough rider above sentinels? Why the powerfists? Expecting to see a lot of close combat are ya?

You're right that the Basilisk probably won't last long. But any firepower it soaks up, are shots not going into my Knight. And you are right that it can be hard to hide, but I find one a whole lot easier to block line of sight to, than two or three. It could also use up my opponents' resources to eliminate back field reserves.

Speaking of which, that is why I like rough riders over sentinels. I prefer their deployment of staying off the table and coming on from any table edge over the free move at the start of the sentinels. I've never played with them before, but I like having my faster more mobile units off the board before the start. They may not even kill a whole lot of stuff, but just tying up Dark Reapers and Devastators, or stealing an objective will be worth it.

I also have some old WFB cavalry models I'm looking forward to converting. One idea is to mix old Chaos fantasy knights with Space Marine bits and the Tech Marine Adeptus Mechanicus Shoulder pads. These would be my Robot Rough Riders, which would be bigger than the old models. They still have lances even! One other thing I like about distinguishing them from the other Catachans, is the Rough Riders don't benefit from +1 Strength, as they are not infantry.

I'm planning for a lot of close combat because the Catachan Brigade and the Scouts will be used for board control. The Blood Angel characters and powerfists are interceptors and nasty surprises.

The Command Point engine cuts the cost of many stratagems in half. So each turn I'll probably use Rotate Ion Shields for a 3+ invulnerable from shooting, Order of Companions to re-roll ones (for to hit, number of shots, wounds, and damage), and Machine Spirit Resurgent to use the top tier damage track as needed. I start off with 20 CP, so this could happen just about every turn. Any other Stratagems I should look in to?

Been working on a variant of this list that minimizes the BA + AM Battalions to see what I can do with a full Super Heavy Detachment of Knights. Not sure if House Krast or House Vulker might be a better fit for this list? Here's what I came up with, so far:

Super Heavy Detachment House Raven:

593 – Knight Castellan, Ion Bulwark and Cawl's Wrath
400 – Knight Errant, Thermal Lance, Thunderstrike Gauntlet
400 – Knight Errant, Thermal Lance, Thunderstrike Gauntlet

Astra Millitarum Battalion:

34 – Company Commander (Warlord: Grand Strategist, Kurov's Aquilla and Power Sword)
30 – Company Commander

40 – Infantry Squad
40 – Infantry Squad
40 – Infantry Squad

Blood Angels Battalion:

129 – Captain w/ Jump pack (Angel's Wing), Storm shield, Thunder hammer
129 – Captain w/ Jump pack , Storm shield, Thunder hammer, (Veritas Vitae)

55 – Scout Squad
55 – Scout Squad
55 – Scout Squad

2000 points – 19 CP – 5 CP (1 for Exalted Court, 1 for Heirlooms, 3 Relics of Baal)
