How do we work out who saves what in a unit? Say I have a unit of 6 Deathwatch vets and 2 of them have storm shields but the rest do not do you use the majority of the unit saving their or can you tank them all against the storm shields until they fail the save turn move onto the normal troops?

The latter. Wounds are assigned to models and rolled one at a time. The defender usually assigns them where they want, unless a model is already wounded in which case it keeps taking wounds until it is dead.

Units don't need a special rule for mixed saves in 8th, because the core rules handle them.

You allocate wounds one at a time, and take the save of the model you allocate it to. Yes, this means you can "tank" multiple hits on a Storm Shield or Terminator, for example. The downside is once that model takes a wound, you're forced to allocate wounds to it until it dies.

Which means that now mixed weapons units like Assault Terminator with Lightning Claws and TH/SS are now actually worth taking.

It was worth taking when wound allocation was a thing in the past as well. Same with 'nearest model' method where you physically place the model with SS to soak up the damage.

Regardless, as posted above, wound allocation and saving throws are made individually. So you can choose to allocate the wounds on the SS models until they fail the save and wound reduced to 0, then resolve the remaining wounds.

I do this with Ogryns, I intermingle the shields so I can choose which one is more advantageous to take the hits; on the Slab shield for low/no AP weapons and the rest get the invulnerable shield save. Once you take an unsaved wound the rest go on that one but it usually messes with my opponents shooting and tanks a bit more damage.
