My local suplier of GW was out of matt warnish, so I bought some off brand from a hobby store.

However, they came out rather glossy. Also, I think the highlights became more suptle.

Can I remedy this by warnishing the, with a GW matt varnish later on?

Hrm.

In general, a matte varnish will give anything a matte finish. What brand did you use?

I use Liquitex and, occassionally, when I don't shake the bottle properly before using, the finish comes out very glossy. I usually just apply another coat, properly shaken, and it fixes the issue.

I assume GW's brand works the same.

While technically true, it doesn't actually mean anything much. 'Matte' in paint products rarely means no gloss at all (that is usually referred to as 'flat' instead) and the amount of gloss varies depending on the manufacturer.

But yes, a light coat of a less glossy spray will fix the glossy coat.

Thank you both. Insaniak that is very usefull. This means I get the best of both worlds, I get my models sealed, and they will not be shiny. :-)

Blood bowl can be a drain in the models from what I have heard, with paint chipping.

Yeah, there's definitely limits to how much reflectiveness will be cut with a matte varnish. I didn't mean to suggest it eliminates all shine, but that (in general) this technique is effective.

I wish there was a standard or a unit for expressing the amount of shine a varnish / medium actually has. Matte and Gloss don't adequately express what I'm looking to understand. Even Liquitex matte is too shiny sometimes.

Thanks, I've been wondering why some mattes have been "hyper matte" while others were just normal matte.

This might jusy be me, but the varnish seemed to darken all the colours as well. I am unsure if this is the shine that makes for a strong costrasting colour. I am getting my paws on the gw spray later today. Hopefully it makes my models look lile when they where painted.

He had more contrast before the warnish.

Especially the flat old brass looked good.

That's fairly standard for varnish, gloss or not. Depending on the varnish used, they can also subdue bright highlights, and/or change the colour tone a little (as some varnishes aren't completely clear, but have a very slight tint to them, but it will be small enough that they will still sell it as a clear varnish)

Testors Dullcote (which I think is now just called 'Testors Spray Laquer) is about the best I have come across for minimising the impact of the spray on the paintjob, but I generally just don't bother with varnish at all to avoid the problem completely.

Well the worst possible thing, or one of them, happened. I did the gw mat warnish on top of the shiny warnish and all of the models turned white! Now I am striping them to start over again.

*sight*

I just hope the green stuff do not desolve

That can happen, but it's often fixable. Check out this article here: https://www.dakkadakka.com/wiki/en/How_to_recover_from_a_Spray_Sealer_disaster

Thanks. I managed to half salvage them with other means. I guess it is what bob ross would call a happy acident.

Being Khemri, I can roll with this.
