I'm trying to decide on a list before heading to my FLGS to pick up the last few units I need, but I'm stuck between two list ideas. I have most of my army bought and built already: 2 units of 10 rubrics, 5 SOT, 10 tzaangors and a shaman, some enlightened, a mutalith, chaos spawn, a forgefiend and a few sorcerers. Both lists fill out some of these units or add something the army needs like anti-tank. My local meta isn't super competitive so I'm trying to keep the list somewhat fluffy while still being able to win games.

For list 1 the game plan is for one ten man squad of rubrics to sit back with the forgefiend and helbrute to form a firebase with the exalted sorcerer on foot supporting with prescience and healing and allowing everything to re-roll 1s to hit. The second rubric squad waits in the webway to deepstrike in with the terminators and termi-sorcerer and apply pressure. The tzaangor squad gets teleported with the dark matter crystal for a turn 1 or 2 charge. My warlord stays with the enlightened and shaman and orbits the battlefield picking off key targets with mortal wounds or stripping invulns off big nasty things while giving the enlightened reroll 1s to make the most of their greatbows. Finally the mutalith and spawn push up a flank to apply pressure and draw fire, potentially becoming a real nuisance if ignored. If I go with this list I'd just need a few tzaangors and a helbrute to be done.

The idea for list 2 is pretty much the same but replaces the backfield rubric squad with cultists. This gives me better screening for my firebase and also opens up some points to bump the tzaangors up to 30 strong as well as swap out the helbrute for a hellforged contemptor. I know the contemptor probably isnt the best choice due to being a walking nuke for psykers, but I have an osiron dreadnaught unassembled that I got for cheap and I really like the model. If I go with this list I'd need to pick up some cultists (most likely convert some arcanist kabalites) and 2 boxes of tzaangors.

Let me know what you think, any C&C is greatly appreciated!

I should add I'm open to swapping out some units for something else within reason. I'm trying to work within a budget for my hobby purchases and don't want to break the bank. If anyone has any suggestions on changes please feel free.

Ahriman and daemon princes are the best in our codex, try to add them. 6 Enlightened will not do much, same as chaos spawn

I agree, although the Spawns aren't bad either - they are very annoying for ur opponent. Easiest thing is: once you have a sorcerer/exalted sorcerer, just call it Ahriman and use the same miniature, you don't even need to buy something else!

Anyway, what I would suggest is to buy more and more Tzaangors. They are cheap and powerful, and you can use on them the Dark Matter Crystal, Warptime and most other powers to make them incredible killers. Plus if you don't have at least 20+20 of them there's no actual reason to play the Shamans imho, you could spend those points in better stuff (i.e. a Daemon Prince u_u)
U WILL need cultist, at least 10 but ideally 20+, otherwise you don't have anything to hold any objectives in your deployment zone - and you don't want to sacrifice important resources to do so.

(Finally, it's ok to have Thousand Sons on their own, but I would sqeeze in either a CSM detachment (one Lord and 3x3 Obliterators, you can modify the Terminators to obtain them with little expense) or a force on Nurgle Daemons to have bulky troops, more powers, and the nurglings which are awesome this is for later, though)

Success is measured in blood; yours or your enemy’s.

How many enlightened should I aim for to make them worthwhile, maybe 9? And is the shaman not worth having around just to buff the enlightened? I could drop the spawn to get more bow enlightened and maybe take a few spears in a separate squad.

9 Elightened should be good. As for the Shaman, the point is that if you have a Daemon prince you have a fighter, who is more resistent, has better saves, casts as many powers as 2 shamans, and makes you reroll 1s. Now, having 9 Enlightened with bows means 18 shots
-> with DP: you hit with 12, reroll 3, 2 more hits. Total 14.
-> with 1/2 shamans: you hit with 15.
Considering how much fighting capabilities you lose for just 1 hit more in average, I'd go for the Prince any time!

Unless you already have 3 DP

cometitive TS cant play without Dp's they are the best unit in whole codex (followed by Ahriman), a supreme Ts command is mandatory in every Ts list, imho, if you can overwhelm opponent with threath saturation you can play Magnus ( 20+20 tzaangors, some Dp's), if they focus down Magnus you have time to deploy the rest of your army and if they dont well.... might be gg.

Thanks for all the input, I'm drafting a new list taking everyone's advice into consideration. Is the helbrute or contemptor worth running? Or should I maybe go with a defiler or second forgefiend instead? I feel like I'm a bit light on anti-tank in general and want to add some more firepower.

Ts contemptors are fine, double butcher or double soulburn+claws, Ts have not big problems with armors, with all those mortal wounds they can deliver.
