I've been looking around and can't seem to find an answer to this as I understand there have been significant changes from version 1 to 2 and most of the resources out there are still geared towards first edition.

I'm thinking of jumping in feet first. It's a history period I've been researching more but on a more societal level so I'm no expert on how Jomsvikings act on the battlefield for example.

I was looking for a tricksy group of warriors that is hard to master and can surprise my opponents. Any regular players got any ideas what I should look into?

I haven't had a chance to play much, but I don't think the faction tactics have changed all that much from V1 to V2.

I've mostly played with the first four original factions, so my thoughts are:

Vikings - Aggressive Foot. All about generating more attacks in close combat, usually by exhausting or even killing your own troops.

Anglo-Danes - Defensive Foot. Make yourself tougher to hit, or put more Fatigue on enemy units.

Normans
- Aggressive Mounted. A core of armored and unarmored cavalry supplemented by crossbowmen and archers. Soften up the enemy at range, then finish them off with a cavalry charge.

Welsh - Hit and Run Foot (or Strathclyde, which was folded into the Welsh force, and is Hit and Run Mounted). Use your javelins to move up and hit the enemy at range, and then either run away or throw more javelins when the enemy tries to charge into close combat.

For your interest, I'd say either Welsh or Irish. The Irish are sort of like the Welsh - a Hit and Run Foot faction, but they get some interesting units, like heroes that are mini-Warlord, or warhounds, which are infantry that move like cavalry.

The Irish also have this great activation ability where you can activate 1 unit for each of your hero units. This can be quite scary with all the Javelins they can throw.

I'll slightly tweak the above:

Normans - Mixed Arms force. Must have a balance of shooting, cav, and new board has abilities the infantry can use.

Welsh and Scots might be to your liking. Neither are 'powerful' outright, but have lots of positional abilities.

Welsh are all about manuver affecting abilities, and the Scots have various run away or keep folks at a distance abilities

Well, Javelins are uh... they make the game interesting

Normans and especially Bretons are doing very well this edition - to the point to causing a fair few players to grumble about them being a bit too strong (in particular javelin armed Bretons).

Irish and Welsh are having a somewhat good time of it too. There's a strength listing based on the tournaments over on the official Saga forums I believe. If I find it again I'll post a link here

As for your question...

I'd vote Irish - my favourites. If you like a bunch of weak guys who like to run and harass with javelins, led by some murder machine heroes (The Curaidh, especially Ulf) then they're the guys for you.

If you like the idea of making the enemy pick their poison, both of which buff your guys up to the point of rage spilling over, then the Jomsvikings may be worth a look - they're tricky to play but fun, even if they're not currently smashing it in the tournament scene right now.

If you've got the A&A supplement and enjoy being a pain in the behind, Huns all the way. Pew pew.

The Dark Ages supplement has a small section in the front that's a good indicator of each factions difficulty to play (little table). It's a good starting point.

Yeah, that Norman battleboard is a bit frustrating.

It is amazing when run with Horse Javelins, but when I try to run with Heavy Cav, my Heavy Cav just gets heavily fatigued and isolated.

I probably just need to get more games in though.

Looks like the FAQ/Errata/Corrections from Tomahawk have brought Javalins back to Earth with a dull thud. I'd still recommend Irish though.

Yeah, once per turn is a welcome change.
