Like the title says. So I’ve been wanting to build The Rout for a while I’ve been putting it off because I did 40k wolves before and didn’t want a repeat. I came across the YouTube channel called The 30k Channel and saw some gorgeous armies. One was the VI Legion, so here I am. Decided to go with the Mark IV armor because it looks”faster” and more agile than Mark III. I think this fits with the Wolves rapid style of warfare. Also let’s me kit bash more smoothly with 40k kits. In a first for me, I’ve planned out the army instead of just buying a bunch of stuff. Not sure how tabletop viable it will be, but I think will be fun to build. Gonna try to Characterize each HQ to fit with the 1000 point block they will lead. We will see how it goes.

Preator
Wolf Priest Guys
Vigilator
Forge Lord plus Battle Automa

3 squads of Grey Slayers, 15 each
A squad of support guys
A squad of heavy Support guys

A Contemptor, maybe 2
A Leviathan

A squad of Seekers
A squad of Outriders
A Storm Eagle

A Sicaran
A Sicaran Punisher
A Sicaran Arcus

The good thing is I’ve already got most of this stuff. Anyway a pick of the supply drop, and the test models. More to follow.

Welcome aboard Nevelon!

Quick update on the first group of Slayers. I think I’ll build a large unit of 20 bolter guys with a couple power weapons thrown in. Then 2 squads of 10 for close combat, for transport purposes. On that note here are the first 10. 40k bits and heads have been lightly sprinkled into the squad.

Cool. Heresy era Space Wolves have a much better colour scheme, imo. Looking forward to seeking more of them.

Hey gents, thanks for the comments. I’ve managed to finish the first squad of Grey Slayers, there are 20. I don’t know why I bother planning out an army, I never stick to it. I figure the big squad for the Storm Eagle and 2 smaller squads in Rhinos. I think they all need transports. Anyway, all Mark IV (which in my opinion is GW’s all time best kit) with a few more 40k bits than I originally intended. But I think it works. A pic of the squad......

Ok, the Slayers are based along with the 2 Sicarans. Gives you an idea of the gray look, I think it’s gonna turn out pretty well. As for the squad, they are going to be a big ranged blob with some Combi weapons and a few power fists and axes. I was thinking the whole 3 units of 15 limits transport options or wastes transport space. The other 2 slayer squads will be 10 man close combat units Rhinos for all.

Ok, so I checked out some forums regarding Slayers and how to arm them. I decided the bolter blob probably doesn’t play to their strengths. Besides, I’ll have plenty of firepower still coming. I changed the squad over to vets and a plasma squad. The rest will form the basis of my close combat Slayer Squads. I’m using the off white to designate Veteran Squads pack markings. I think it looks really good against the gold. Anyway, a couple pics.......

This squad is slowly coming together. I used the Legion symbols from the Burning of Prospero set so I could place them on the left shoulder. The FW sheet has the wolf facing the opposite direction so would have to be on the right side. Not sure what that is all about. The transfers look fine. I plan to add a bunch more. Now working on pack markings and heads. This squad should be done reasonable soon.

Got a little more done. With the bases I decided on something I haven’t seen with the Rout before. Gonna use brown and green for a grasslands theme. We will see how it looks, I can always switch to snow without much fuss.

Got home from work and tried a few basing ideas. Definitely not traditional wolves. I’m still trying to decide if I like this theme. If not, not big deal. I’ve got a great recipe for snow. Also got a couple heads done so almost there with this squad.

Looking good so far.

I'd suggest avoiding covering the whole base top with static grass, though - always winds up looking like a base that's just covered in static grass. Patches with a bit of dirt/rock/snow/whatever in between look much better.

Hey Azalle, thanks for stopping by. It’s been a while. Your armies are looking great too.

Insaniak- yes good point. I used all static grass on a guard army a few years ago. It worked with the style of the army, Genswick Rifles I think they are called. Not very marine-y.

So the first Veteran pack. I think the mix of HH and 40k kits are going ok so far. It’s a basic squad and I’ll start the second shortly. I decided on the basic cork and grass tuft base. I always stress way too much on bases. Also some WIPs on Grey Slayers. I’ve been browsing around for transports and may try something I’ve never done in a HH army. Namely the 40k Land Raider and Rhinos. I know they are technically appropriate marks for the Heresy, I don’t know maybe I’m a FW snob at heart. Still deciding.

Thanks for stopping by my page FSU. And I love the wips you have up so far.

I'm also tempted to drop the money on the FW rhinos for my DA as well brother.

Azalle- yeah, the FE Rhinos are worth the price I think. They look way, way better than 40k version. Also I’m getting a Land Raider Phobos and too many 40k vehicles may throw off the Heresy era feel of the army.

Some pics of the Slayers. Not quite done, need some heads and pack markings.

Excellent work as always, I'm always really impressed with the speed and quality that you are able to build an army like this, really makes me think what a slow modeller I am.

These look really ace so far.

Good choice on MkIV armour it blends really well with the 40k parts.

Yeah so I was all excited to do The Rout and promptly lost all interest. I have no idea why and I am kinda disappointed in myself. So I reorganized the army into a small battalion size 40k force. They look nice, just lost motivation. I also painted up some other guys for a buddy of mine. I believe these are the only non GW/FW models I have ever done. Anyway, thanks to all who stopped by and took a look.

40k, 30k, still some nice looking puppies.

Monsters are cool looking. I used to paint a more diverse selection of minis, but it’s pretty much all GW these days. Sometimes an old bit of lead will float up from the depths of the bench for a lick of paint, but not much, and not recently. But I got into painting doing Grenedeir/Ral Partha minis for D&D.

But with the range that GW offers these days, there is plenty of variety if you just want to paint cool stuff. Top quality product as well.
